This was the ninth of 16 Andy Hardy films starring Mickey Rooney; and the fourth pairing of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland.
"Bud's Won't Bud" (music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by E.Y. Harburg), sung by Judy Garland, was prerecorded, possibly filmed but not used in the release print. For years, only a partial prerecording was thought to remain until the full recording was discovered and released in 2006 on Rhino's "That's Entertainment", CD box set. The tune, intended for Hannah Williams to sing in the 1937 Broadway musical "Hooray for What!" had been. Finally, in the Jeanette MacDonald vehicle Cairo (1942), "Buds Won't Bud" was presented on-screen, sung by Ethel Waters.
Judy filmed her scenes between February and April 1940, while also filming "Strike Up the Band."
Andy's dinner at Daphne's Sirroco Club Dog Benefit totalled a little over $38. $38 in 1940 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $724.86 today, an increase of $686.86 over 81 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.71% per year between 1940 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 1,807.53%.
"All I Do Is Dream of You" (music by Nacio Herb Brown, lyrics by Arthur Freed), sung by Judy Garland, was filmed but then deleted from the release print. The audio has been issued on a 1996 Rhino double CD titled "Judy Garland: Collectors' Gems from the M-G-M Films."
