What struck me while watching this short was the lack of dialog from the characters. Perhaps Mel Blanc was in contract negotiations while this short was being made? Not once during this short do we ever hear any of the animals speaking out. Not even so much as a, "Hey, not so fast", or a, "Why, I'm a gonna get you". Not even the sure-fire and overused sardonic staple, "It's a living" is used here, and believe me, that line could've easily been used by the supporting characters, the Beaver (not Jerry Mathers) or the Squirrel.
The bulk of this short centers around two dogs and their misadventures in chasing down a most elusive bone. While in hot pursuit in a cold climate, the dogs accidentally jump off a ski jump, fall into fishing holes, slide helplessly across a frozen lake, break many beaver dams, and of course, while tumbling downhill, they become part of a gathering ball of snow. All standard comedic fluff for cartoons made today or yesterday.
Although the dogs exude a slight cuteness, there really isn't much to them in the way of personality. The cartoon seems very much like the prize they both seek, bare boned and without much taste. Even the title suffers badly (Snowtime for Comedy), partly for how prophetically true the title is. If you want a better title (and a better cartoon) with the same relative storyline, check out the Popeye cartoon, "I'll Be Skiing Ya". It also takes place on a wintertime ski resort and it is also centered on two dogs chasing a bone.
