Like Louis Jouvet the first love of Edwige Feuillere was theatre and like Raimu she made only one film for Continental which is perhaps just as well as two or more of this standard would be tough to take. One of the loveliest as well as finest of her contemporaries - and those included such illustrious names as Danielle Darrieux, Michele Morgan, Arletty, Micheline Presle, etc - Feuillere often - and more so than any of the others - gave the impression she was on stage rather than a film set and depending on the circumstances this was either a positive or negative factor. Certainly her stage credentials were first-rate for she not only created the lead in The Madwoman of Chaillot and played more than two years in The Eagle Has Two Heads but her Marguerite Gautier in La Dame aux Camellias was the most acclaimed of any French actress and was preserved on disc all of which makes it a safe bet that she was not too wild playing the mistress not of Napoleon himself but his cousin, Jerome. Maurice Tourneur threw in some pleasing montages and fancy framing but overall this was one that probably all concerned would wish to forget.
