Sex & Nudity

  • This movie is a romance, but nothing beyond a few kisses and hugs are shown. At the party, very minor cleavage is visible.

Violence & Gore

  • A man on horseback falls as his horse trips when Jane accidentally walks in their way. Neither he and his horse, nor Jane sustain any notable injury.
  • A man is bitten by an insane woman (shown far away through a window at night), and later a little blood is shown. A man temporarily struggles with his insane wife.

Profanity

  • Mr. Rochester uses "What the Devil?" and "The deuce" each in a couple of different instances.
  • None.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Brief smoking and drinking-nothing heavy.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The dark house and the fact that there is an insane woman upstairs maybe a little unnerving. At one point, a crazed laugh (not intense) is heard. The music accompanying it may be somewhat suspenseful.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • We learn towards the end that a male character hanged himself and a woman who had descended into madness jumped to her death (neither event is shown).

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • We hear a few sharp cries from Thornfield's tower during different points of the scenes that involve Mr. Rochester's home (they are uttered by the hidden lady who has lost all of her sanity) and during one moment, a locked door to the attic is shaken and pounded from inside while Jane must tend to an injured man a few feet away from it.
  • A girl dies from illness in a cruel prison-like school where she and Jane have been humiliated and punished for their looks and for only assumed immoral attributes. A few other deaths take place (none of which are seen, although we do see a bedridden older character in a somewhat peaceful yet slightly delirious state a few days before her death).
