World War, a solemn vow, and a promise betrayed lead to a ‘night of the living war dead’ – all cooked up by the director of Napoleon, Abel Gance. The early, famed pacifist fantasy is back in near-perfect condition and restored to its full length. It’s a reworking, not a remake, of Gance’s 1919 silent classic.

Sunday's overcrowded with great TV, but what to watch the rest of the time? Each Monday, we bring you this guide to five worthy -- or at least noteworthy -- highlights from the other six days of the week. Directed by Jean Negulesco TCM, Monday, April 30th at 8pm Turner Classic Movies is showing a marathon of four early films from the Romanian-born Jean Negulesco, better known for his later, glossier work like "How to Marry a Millionaire," "Three Coins in the Fountain" and "Daddy Long Legs." This selection is from his stint directing for Warner Bros. in the 1940s, kicking off with the film noir "Nobody Lives Forever," with John Garfield as a racketeer home from World War II. It's followed by "Casablanca" reunion (sans Bogart and Bergman) "The Conspirators," Joan Crawford romance "Humoresque," and "The Mask of Dimitrios," Negulesco's...

The Big Picture explores a question that has long fascinated readers and writers – the situation of people who disappear from their everyday lives to hide, take on new identities or are never seen again. In real life, the inventor Rudolf Diesel and the writer Ambrose Bierce both disappeared in 1913; in 1920, the ex-Labour MP Victor Grayson vanished in London, possibly abducted to prevent him exposing governmental corruption. In his short story Wakefield, Nathaniel Hawthorne explores the mind of a middle-class Victorian Londoner who drops out to hide for 20 years a street away from his old home, and in The Third Man Graham Greene (possibly borrowing the idea from Eric Ambler's The Mask of Dimitrios) created an antihero who fakes his own death. In Patricia Highsmith's twice-filmed The Talented Mr Ripley, a villain takes over the identity of a dead man, a device brilliantly used in Antonioni's The Passenger and...

It’s a WWII-fest, with five films starring the legendary Errol Flynn. These adventures from 1942-1945 are a solid showcase of not only the star, but era itself, and the DVD set adds to the effect with some great bonuses. With vintage newsreels, classic cartoons, and more, you can relive the experience of these films like never before.
From a unique period in film history, putting out war adventures with a unique derring-do perspective, and starring the unique screen charm of Flynn, this is a collection with a surprisingly varied appeal. Mostly directed by another legend, Raoul Walsh (White Heat, The Tall Men), the set also manages to deliver an effort of style, with Walsh generally aiming at some manner of art in his semi-pseudo-propaganda vehicles.
Taking a look at the Nazi menace from every angle imaginable, whether as an American pilot, Canadian mountie, or Norwegian villager, Flynn gets a...

No doubt many prefer the swashbuckling stuff but Errol Flynn distinguished himself just fine in his less popular war films. There are so many special features here I'm just listing them straight from the site but no fan of classic cinema history or Flynn needs to be told to pick this up.
