Crime and punishment - a rare moment of movie magic
ulf-635-5233678 April 2013
It's very bold of a Swedish film company to choose Dostoevsky's Raskolnikov for a major production. All the more pleasing it is to note that the bold company succeeded and the result is not only passable but excellent. Crime and punishment has become a beautiful victory for the director Hampe Faustman. Faustman can consider this work as his masterpiece in the art. Additionally, he plays the student Raskolnikov in a clear and convincing way. Characters, settings, costumes, atmosphere - everything makes a startling true impression and the Swedish exteriors is so cleverly photographed, they provide a convincing Russian environment. Göran Strindbergs camera keeps a consistent naturalistic tone and it's actually a relief to undisturbed by any kind of musical accompaniment listen to Dostoevsky's words, so full of wisdom and penetrating knowledge of human nature.

Stellar Swedish adaptation of the novel

Dostojevski's Crime and Punishment is, arguably, one of the most notable and acclaimed novels of all time - and a great outlook on man and his desires and morals.

There has been many (and lots of them incredible) adaptations of the story throughout the years, but this is definitely one of the best, a Swedish adaptation, and yet another great testament of Sweden's abilities to conjure great filmmaking.

The incredible Hampus Faustman delivers as ever, and adapts the script beautifully, whilst adding his own touch, and the actors all do an incredible job, all of them legends, and providing some stellar performances.

The cinematography, cutting and editing is incredible, very beautifully put together.

Overall, definitely a masterful achievement, and one that very much captures the essence of the novel splendidly! Highly recommended for any lover of film.
