Argentina: circus, theater ... and cinema
mariorabey27 March 2007
Mario Soffici was one of the greatest directors of the Argentine golden age cinema. Some of his outstanding movies were Prisioneros de la Tierra aka Prisoners of the Land (1939), La Cabalgata del Circo aka Circus Cavalcade (1945), and Rosaura a las 10 aka Rosaura at 10 o'clock (1958). La cabalgata del circo evokes the rich and idiosyncratic evolution, developed between 1880 and 1930, started from creole Argentinean nomadic circus, which included short plays (or "pantomimes") in the same perform with clowns and other more conventional circus performing acts. In a moment of that evolution circus overlapped with theater in a genre proper of the Argentinean and Italian arenas in the 1920's: the sainete, a kind of satirical play. All of this in a film that says about itself during the final sequences: it is a film -and not a story about circus-.
