- The daughter of a strange famiy has returned after a long time to the family estate. She has two investigators checking out the eerie goings-on on the estate's spooky mansion.
- Story takes place over a span of years and a lot happens before Jack Packard and 'Doc" Long show up, or is explained after they make their entrance: A girl marries against the wishes of her parents, the parents argue about it, the father is killed, the girl loses her mind, and the mother goes away and pretends to be dead. Years later, the daughter of the insane woman (she had gotten married, and pregnant)returns to the old family homestead, and is not welcomed with open arms, as this family has several closets containing skeletons...from around the world.—Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net>
- Adam Franklin hires renowned private detectives Jack Packard and Doc Long to accompany one of his clients, Nina Martin Arnold, and look after her interests in the reading of the will of her just deceased maternal grandmother, Phoebe Martin, at the Martin Plantation in Kentucky bluegrass country. Franklin has remotely looked after Nina's affairs all her life, he who she has never met and has no way of contacting. Jack and Doc too have never met Franklin, who hired them via correspondence. Nina grew up not knowing her family, she who was raised in a girls' school. Nina, Jack and Doc will learn bits and pieces of Nina's story while at the Martin Plantation. Family matriarch Phoebe was a controlling woman who, along with her now long deceased husband, Captain Selby Martin, had arranged a marriage for who was Nina's mother, Rachel Martin, to a man she didn't love. Instead, Rachel secretly got married to her true love, Richard Arnold. Upon learning of the marriage, Phoebe banished Richard from Rachel's life, she who never saw him again. Regardless, Nina is the product of Rachel and Richard's marriage, Nina who too was sent away by Phoebe shortly after her birth, hence the reason she does not know her family. To control the leak of any scandal, Phoebe kept all three of her offspring - Ralph, Edward (who is deaf) and Rachel - on the Martin Plantation, where they've lived all their lives. Nina, Jack and Doc further learn that Rachel's situation has led to her being delusional, she still thinking that she has a newborn and that Richard will be returning at any moment. The only other people who are to be at the will reading besides Ralph and Edward, who make it clear that their niece and her guardians are unwelcome guests, are the family lawyer, Reed Cawthorne of Philadelphia, and the family butler, Joshua. As per Phoebe's strict instructions, the will is to be read exactly one week following her death, which is the day after Nina, Jack and Doc's arrival. Over the next twenty-four hours and beyond, they will find that old plantation houses have many secret hideaways and emit unusual noises. Or could those noises be manufactured to scare people away or drive them crazy? They will also find that their lives could be in danger as someone is willing to kill to get them to leave. Many of the answers behind what is going on can be learned if/when they discover the identity of Adam Franklin.—Huggo
