Director Pare Lorentz made a series of documentaries during the Great Depression, promoting Roosevelt's 'New Deal' initiatives. After WWII, the funding for such films dried up, and Lorentz only made one other film, this portrayal of a farmer's co-op. The style is very reminiscent of the propaganda/promotional documentaries of the era; stirring music, authoritative voice-over, inspiring black and white images. The film presents an enticing perspective where a socialist collective approach successfully meets capitalist, market-driven economics.
This is a worthwhile historical document, from a gifted filmmaker, that sit comfortably among his other more well-known works. Far from a unique experience, but still worth seeing.
