The early days of the Hubbards of Bowden, Alabama, a family of Southern schemers and grifters, consisting of the father - the most-hated man in town - his retiring wife, who has a secret or two of her own, their daughter and two sons. One of the sons uncovers a family secret, which, if revealed, will likely lead to the lynching of his father, and threatens to disclose it if the father doesn't sign over to him all of his wealth.
