English sparrow Monte's transatlantic dialect pays homage to British-born actor Ronald Colman. Colman notably sported a monocle in The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), as Monte does in this cartoon. And Monte's words after being blown up by a grenade, "If I were king...", are a reference to Colman's role in the film If I Were King (1938).
Monte briefly holds up a noose while discussing Beaky with his wife.
The film 1947 Life with Father, which later became a TV series, is spoofed in this short's title.
The reference to the Blitz in WW2 was accurate. Londoners (and most city dwellers in Britain) were trained in civil defense during the war.
