Rooney Showcase
abooboo-219 October 2001
Slight is right. But somehow it doesn't matter. It's still a rather enjoyable little movie. There just isn't much going on at all here, but it's bright and brisk and agreeable. It offers up some token conflict from time to time, but it's almost as if it's envisioning an audience with heart problems - it doesn't want to do anything that might upset them or cause them undue stress.

The key here is Mickey Rooney. He is just a human dynamo; his immense self-confidence is exhilarating, contagious. He wings through each scene without a trace of doubt or indecision. His timing, his uncanny sense of pacing, his delivery, are impeccable. He is precision incarnate. It's a very, very strong, potent characterization.

Wasn't quite so impressed with Eddie Bracken. You want him to supply some legitimate resistance to Rooney's brazen scheming, some spark. He isn't necessarily a good comic match for him. Bracken is never as lovable as he's supposed to be. He doesn't complement Rooney in an ingenious enough way - the way a good, seasoned straight man really should.

Other assets would have to be the clean, crisp photography and gorgeous Elaine Stewart as Rooney's love interest. More than the curves, he admires the dollar signs in her eyes. Cute film.

One for Rooney's legion of fans!
JohnHowardReid22 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Despite its very disappointing conclusion, this is one of Mickey Rooney's most appealing "B" vehicles. In fact, he makes a first-rate con-man, while Eddie Bracken provides the ideal foil for Rooney's "gas". And although she's neither costumed nor photographed very attractively, I also really liked Elaine Stewart's seductive heroine. Another plus is that some of my favorite character players, including Charles Halton, Dabbs Greer, Douglas Fowley and Ida Moore can be glimpsed momentarily in support cameos. For once, Don Weis's direction is unusually capable, while the film editing of all the 2nd unit, stunt and studio shots is nothing if not remarkably smooth. And there's at least one stand-out comedy sequence with a runaway van that features Rooney mugging away most delightfully.

Minor comedy with a few good laughs
anasazi-145-68212723 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Rooney and Eddie Bracken team up to sell gasoline that they steal from an underground pipeline that enables them to run a chin gas station out of business. The movie has a few good laughs with Rooney playing the "brains" of the outfit with Bracken playing the beleaguered old army buddy who goes along with the scheme against his better judgment. Bracken plays a more grown up version of the characters he played for Preston sturgeon a decade earlier in Miracle of Morgan Creek and Hail the Conquering Hero. THe movie is only about 70 minutes long and resolves itself quickly once a crisis causes Bracken to seize control of the situation.

Good 71-minute Mickey Rooney movie. But Galveston? Ha!
TxMike3 November 2004
Warning: Spoilers
'A Slight Case of Larceny' came out in 1953, about the time my dad and I, a 7-year-old, began to take weekend trips to New Orleans, the Gulf Coast, and Houston. I remember those high gasoline prices of 20 to 30 cents a gallon. So, here in this movie, where the posted 'discount' was 5, 6 cents a gallon, all the way up to 11 cents, was really a big percentage discount. But where were the lines of cars, waiting to fill up at those low prices? It was set in Galveston, but it was obviously filmed on back lots and on California highways. Galveston does not have hills and rocky roadside cliffs. The beach scenes looked a lot like Galveston did back in the 1950s, but could have been southern California beaches. Both main characters wore WWII leather flight jackets, just like the jacket I wear every winter, and that was fun to see.

Mickey Rooney stars as Augustus 'Geechy' Cheevers, a born schemer. Operating "Cheevers and Clopp's Gasoline and Oil Station", along with Frederick Clopp (Eddie Bracken). Meanwhile, a wealthy owner of 15 stations puts up his own right across the street, and begins to undercut their prices to try to put them out of business. So Geechy Cheevers has to figure out a scheme to counteract that.

SPOILERS are contained in the rest of my comments, you may want to quit reading now if you have not seen the movie. Geechy's scheme is to dig a tunnel from his station, under the road, to his competitor's gasoline pipeline, tap in, and use the "free" gasoline as a way to undercut prices and stay in business. He does, and after a long price war, causes the other station to close down. But a robbery results in a cigarette spark that burns down the station. Afraid they will be exposed they get on Geechy's motorcycle and run away, eventually turning themselves in because of guilt. They were not being sought, but tried anyway after the confession, found guilty of petty larceny and sentenced to 6 months plus repay all the stolen gasoline. Last scene, working for their women, who refuse to let them drink beer during the day, we see that Geechy has tapped into the draft beer "pipeline" to get his free beer!

Rooney was 33 here, and in fine form. Already a veteran of movies, even today in 2004 he has roles in three more. As of this count his 259th movie, although many of them were B&W film shorts back in the silent days.

Good team
bkoganbing23 September 2019
Mickey Rooney returned to MGM to team up with Eddie Bracken in this amusing film about two guys just trying to get ahead. A Slight Case Of Larceny has Rooney full of schemes and Bracken his go along pal.

They buy a gas station and demolish a chain competition by merely pilfering the pipeline with an ice cream truck converted to an tanker. Nice way to operate with low overhead. Of course they're in all kinds of trouble before the film ends.

Rooney and Bracken teamed well together, surprised they didn't do more work together. Bracken is married to Marilyn Erskine and they have two kids. Rooney has a Nathan Detroit/Adelaide type engagement with Elaine Stewart.

I love the ending where Charles Halton deflates Rooney's ego. See it and find out how.

The larceny was in wasting my time with a second viewing.
mark.waltz14 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
For the first half-hour of this frenetic comedy, stage and screen actor Eddie Bracken can barely get a word in, and then it seems as if tired of Mickey Rooney's non-stop banter decided to fight fire with fire. From then on, he's nearly as obnoxious as Rooney is, both of them playing to go getters who get into illegal activity by siphoning gas from another station and selling it at an extreme discount. Of course it gets them into trouble, but a good majority of the film deals with the impact on their personal life and the variety of customers and of course their dealings with the owner of another station. Then there's the comedy, a mixed bag by today's standards.

The story involving the gas station larceny doesn't really begin until the second reel of the film, showing the two men in the military, their efforts to find honest work and finally their decision to do something shifty. The domestic part of the story isn't really interesting and the two starlets playing Bracken's wife and Rooney's girlfriend really don't have screen charisma. The presence of some good character actors does bring us up a notch but I want more than just 30 seconds of the adorable Ida Moore and others. Rooney and Bracken actually don't even seem to like each other, another big misstep. This seems like something that Columbia rather than MGM would do, but Columbia obviously had better comic contributors where most of MGM's comic talent worked in the A unit. This one is seriously only for the obsessive Rooney fan, here during one of the darkest points in his career.

Hilarious, when I was young.
phonos-127 December 2007
I saw this film in 1954 and have not seen it since. Why it still sticks in my mind after all this time is a bit of a mystery, but 2 scenes stick out in my memory. The first previously described in an earlier comment was the scene where the main characters are drilling into the gas line with sparks flying around, the second where the motorcycle cop pulls them over in their open topped gas laden truck and lights up a smoke. The look of panic on our heroes' faces nearly made me wet myself! This film was released in the U.S. on VHS some years ago. I bid for it on ebay but was skittled in the rush. I'd love to see it again, if only to see if I could still laugh as much.

I live in Australia where we call gas petrol.

Bill.

Mickey Rooney at his comic best!
Tony-25224 August 1999
My friend and I must have seen this movie at least 5 times back in 53, it just struck us as hilarious. Mickey was at his best as the cocky optimist "Geechy" with his side kick Eddie Bracken as Clopp. Cheevers & Clopp open a gas station and are doing fine but competition opens up across the street, enter Elaine Stewart. A major Gas Company's gas line is under Cheevers and Clopp's station. So they decide to siphon gas from this source to battle the "gas war". This was larceny but not enough to to have a major impact on anyone but their competition. The laughs hardly ever stop as they romp through success and major failures. Rooney and Bracken play off of one another masterfully. Its a fun movie to watch!

A fun goofy movie I would love to see again!
tomh-1627 January 2003
I first saw this movie in New York while on a job interview trip in 1968. I have not seen hide nor hair of this movie since. I do, however, remember what a funny, slapstick romp it was. I realize it was a "B" movie, and likely was shot on a budget. But no expense was spared to maximize the comedy content. The scene of those two knuckleheads in the basement with the sparking electric drill was just great. Very enjoyable, I would love to see it again. Alas, my local television stations never had a print of it to run, and I am sure the networks wouldn't waste airtime on it today. I wonder why it has not been released on videotape? Somebody is sitting on a great early '50's comedy. If you are a Mickey Rooney fan, don't miss a chance to see this one. It is wonderful.

Cute Mickey Rooney Film!
muffinheuer20034 August 2005
Anyone who is a fan of mickey rooney will love this film. He is great in it! It's one of his funnist 1950's roles. In my opinion Mickey Rooney should have been #1 in the 50's too. The man was sizzeling with talent. He truly is one of the best actors that has ever lived, if not the best. This movie is great! The story is slight, but the acting of Mickey Rooney is worth a watch. Eddie Bracken is not the greatest actor and Mickey Rooney far outshines him. Mickey Rooney's love interest is typical of a girl he would have loved in real life. Tall and pretty! I would highly recommend this film to Rooney fans and to fans of cute, clean comedies of the 1950s! Enjoy!

Buying gas at the Service Station in the 50`s
cherokee-1024 June 1999
We were just a teen ager when we first saw this movie in the 50`s. It was very comical as well as having some suspense elements. The plot of the movie was a reality that could happen.Mickey Rooney and Eddie Bracken did a super portrayal as post world army buddies that got into a competitive business pumping gas. This movie was filmed in an era whereas we had first started driving a car and really impressed us.As I recall the entire cast did a great job.We haven`t seen the movie in years and sure would like to see it again. Good wholesome entertainment. I appreciate your web site.
