A middling entry in the genre of blow-it-up big action spectacles, Paul Wendkos’ Spain-filmed western gives us all the excitement promised by the poster, but with some cardboard characters and lumpy storytelling. George Peppard is on the job, however, and once again proves he can carry a big picture, flaws and all.

As a teenager, many of my first and strongest movie impressions came not from the movies, but from certain critics. I memorized Robin Wood’s analysis before getting a look at Hitchcock’s Psycho. Raymond Durgnat introduced me to Georges Franju and Luis Buñuel, and I first learned to appreciate a number of great movies including The Barefoot Contessa from Richard Corliss, a terrific critic who championed writers over director-auteurs.
The Barefoot Contessa is a classically structured story, in that it could work as a novel; it’s told from several points of view.

The Locarno Film Festival has announced their lineup for the 67th edition, taking place this August between the 6th and 16th. It speaks for itself, but, um, wow...
"Every film festival, be it small or large, claims to offer, if not an account of the state of things, then an updated map of the art form and the world it seeks to represent. This cartography should show both the major routes and the byways, along with essential places to visit and those that are more unusual. The Festival del film Locarno is no exception to the rule, and I think that looking through the program you will be able to distinguish the route map for this edition." — Carlo Chatrian, Artistic Director

Italian filmmaker Alberto Lattuada dies at 90
ROME -- After a drawn out bout with illnesses over the past several years, Italian director Alberto Lattuada, famed for his satirical take on Italy's sexual norms, died on Saturday in Rome. He was 90. With a career that spanned the 1950's to the early 1980's -- considered the golden era of Italian cinema -- Lattuado was credited with writing some of the most cutting edge women's roles and for helping to discover a bevy of female talent including Catherine Spaak, Natassja Kinski, Clio Goldsmith and Barbara De Rossi. Lattuada's best known credits include the movie La Spiaggia (1954) and I Dolci Inganni (Sweet Deceits), which pushed the traditional envelope with its exploration of a 16-year-old girl's first sexual experiences.
