  Gladys Glover : [Extends her hand but instead of him shaking it, Pete kisses it impulsively. She looks taken aback] 

  Pete Sheppard : I saw a fella do that in a French movie last week. I've been meaning to try it ever since.

• Gladys Glover : I haven't changed. I'm the same as I was before - only in a different way.

• Gladys Glover : Well... I think... if they're big enough, they're old enough.

• Sour Man in Central Park : Look, girlie. I don't mind a pick up once in a while, only I like to do the pickin' see?

  Gladys Glover : Lister, mister. How would you like to watch some of your language?

  Sour Man in Central Park : Who are you?

  Gladys Glover : Nobody, that's who.

  Sour Man in Central Park : So why are you trying to make a big stink?

  Gladys Glover : Who, me?

  Sour Man in Central Park : Sure you, not who.

  [to the others in the park listening] 

  Sour Man in Central Park : Comes in walkin' in barefooted. Sits down on the top of me...

  Gladys Glover : [Incredulous]  Top of?

  Sour Man in Central Park : Starts throwing around peanuts around. Gets all them dusty birds over. Top it off, she tries to pick me up... if I ain't got enough troubles now.

  Gladys Glover : Listen, mister, how would you like a good smack in your face?

  Sour Man in Central Park : Why don't you try it?

  Gladys Glover : Because it's too hot's why!

  Sour Man in Central Park : What a Park!

  [He leaves] 

  Gladys Glover : [to Pete Sheppard]  How do you like that?

  Pete Sheppard : [Who has been filming the encounter]  Not bad. A real interesting shot.

• Gladys Glover : [Dancing with Evan and looking over his shoulder]  Look!

  Evan Adams III : What?

  Gladys Glover : Walter Winchell!

  Evan Adams III : [Nonchalantly]  Oh, yes.

  Gladys Glover : That's the seventh big name I've seen tonight. What a night!

• [after meeting Gladys in central Park] 

  Pete Sheppard : Good luck to you, Gladys. I sure hope you make a name for yourself, if that's what you want. If that's what you really want, you'll get it.

  Gladys Glover : How?

  Pete Sheppard : I don't know. Just a theory of mine: that not only 'where there's a will, there's a way'... but, 'where's there's a way, there's a will'. See?

• Gladys Glover : Listen, Peter, I'm over twenty-one.

  Pete Sheppard : From the neck down, yeah.

• Evan Adams III : [Putting the moves on Gladys]  There you are.

  Gladys Glover : Yes.

  Evan Adams III : Feeling better?

  Gladys Glover : Much.

  Evan Adams III : There's nothing like champagne.

  Gladys Glover : Yes, there is.

  Evan Adams III : What?

  Gladys Glover : More champagne.

• Gladys Glover : [speaking before a crowd of military personnel at a plane-naming ceremony - the plane in question being named after her, Gladys Glover]  General Dunkley, Colonel Wiley, and all you fine men. This has been the greatest day of my life. Not only because you wanna' name a plane after me, but be- because today I found out I don't want you to. And why.

  Gladys Glover : [gathered crowd starts to murmur]  I'm nobody to name a plane after. I don't stand for anything... but that plane does. And so do you fellas. And that makes you somebody, even though nobody ever heard of your names, whatever they are. 'Cause every one of you are one of the crowd.

  Gladys Glover : [laughs]  Hey, that's an idea: why don't you call your plane "One Of The Crowd." Because that's what it is, and- and that's what makes it great. General Dunkley, Colonel Wiley, and all you fine men: hooray!

  [crowd erupts into boisterous cheers] 

• Gladys Glover : I don't think the average American girl should do this. So, good night.

• Bert Piazza : So the point we are trying to make is just this. That there is no reason for you to be unreasonable.

  Gladys Glover : I don't think I'm unreasonable.

  Entrikin : You don't?

  Gladys Glover : No. I think I'm reasonable. You are the ones who are "un".

• Pete Sheppard : Hey, look, Gladys, any other kind of date, you want to break it, okay, but this has been set up for a week. And when I go to the trouble of callin' my mother and she goes to the trouble of fixin' a whole dinner and, well, my father - he probably even went and shaved.

  Gladys Glover : Well, maybe tomorrow night?

  Pete Sheppard : Dinner'll be cold by then.

  Gladys Glover : Gee, I feel just terrible.

  Pete Sheppard : You *should*!

• Gladys Glover : You must be on the lonesome side.

  Evan Adams III : Yes. Yes, I am.

  Gladys Glover : You ever think of getting a parrot?

• Evan Adams III : I'd rather have you.

  Gladys Glover : Than a parrot?

  Evan Adams III : Yes.

• Pete Sheppard : What's your line?

  Gladys Glover : Well, since this morning, about 11:30, nothing. I got canned on account of three-quarters of an inch - around the hips.

  Pete Sheppard : [looks down]  Well, think of that.

  Gladys Glover : I had this good job modeling girdles. Do you know what they are?

  Pete Sheppard : To be sure.

  Gladys Glover : So, this designer and the boss got into a whole hassle on account of a couple of wrinkles. Back and forth, back and forth. Finally, I was in in the middle. So, the designer says, the girdle's the right size, I'm the wrong size. So, the boss got excited and says, "I'll bet you $50." So, Mr. Ostrander took the bet. He's a designer. They get out a tape measure. Just my luck. This morning. Three-quarters of an inch too much!

• Gladys Glover : You take New York. You never meet anybody to talk to, unless its somebody you happen to know - or, somebody fresh or looking for something they're not entitled to.

• Pete Sheppard : It's my business: documentaries.

  Gladys Glover : What's that?

  Pete Sheppard : Well, I make movies only they're about real things: people. places, and things. This one I'm working on now is about Central Park.

  Gladys Glover : Well, I'm glad you think I'm a real thing.

  Pete Sheppard : Decidedly.

• Gladys Glover : I always think I can think better in the Park. That's why I took my shoes off. I always think I can think better with my shoes off.

• Gladys Glover : I'm getting nowhere. You know what I mean? You know, some people, when they get to that point where they realize that they're getting nowhere, you know, they just kill themselves. But, I don't feel like it.

• Gladys Glover : If you *knew* what it means to me! Oh, what it makes me feel and all. Oh, if you knew, you wouldn't ask me for it. Not even for your own soap.

• Gladys Glover : Every time I see it, I get a bigger one than last time: boot.

• Gladys Glover : Aren't you going to go around Columbus Circle?

  Evan Adams III : What for?

  Gladys Glover : To see it!

  Evan Adams III : It?

  Gladys Glover : Well, what this whole date's about.

  Evan Adams III : What?

  Gladys Glover : What I've got that you want.

  Evan Adams III : What you've got...

  Gladys Glover : The sign!

• Gladys Glover : Ah. Faster. Please, faster! Rrrr! Ah...

• Gladys Glover : When you think that last week, I was nobody. And this week, I've got my name on the big sign and dancing in a place like this where everybody's somebody!

• Gladys Glover : How big?

  Evan Adams III : Well, I don't know, offhand. We'd have to look into it.

  Gladys Glover : But, not as big as this one, huh?

  Evan Adams III : Possibly not, no.

  Gladys Glover : No soap.

• Evan Adams III : The size of the sign doesn't matter.

  Gladys Glover : No?

• Pete Sheppard : What sort of a fruitcake are you anyway?

  Gladys Glover : No sort of.

• Gladys Glover : Different people do different things that may seem crazy to other different people; but, that doesn't make it.

• Gladys Glover : I bet if I had money, I bet I could have made myself into one of the most well-known people around.

  Brod Clinton : Let me ask you something, Glover. What if I could plant you around a few spots? You know, radio, TV, whatever. Would you do it?

  Gladys Glover : Do what?

  Brod Clinton : Go on.

  Gladys Glover : Yeah, but, do what? Once I'm on.

  Brod Clinton : I don't know. We'll figure something. Maybe, just to tell your story like you told it to me. It's funny!

  Gladys Glover : Funny?

  Brod Clinton : Well, fascinating.

• Pete Sheppard : What most people, real people, want - is privacy. That's about the best thing anybody can have.

  Gladys Glover : Not me.

  Pete Sheppard : What is this craze to get so well known?

  Gladys Glover : What craze?

  Pete Sheppard : Well, you think everybody is so anxious to be above the crowd?

  Gladys Glover : Yes.

  Pete Sheppard : But, what's the point of it? In the first place, everybody can't be above the crowd, can they?

  Gladys Glover : No. But, everybody can try, if they want to.

• Gladys Glover , Pete Sheppard : [singing]  We, might have been meant for each other...

• Pete Sheppard : You want my opinion?

  Gladys Glover : No.

  Pete Sheppard : All right, my opinion is this: it's better that your name stand for something on one block; than it stands for nothing or something bad all over the entire world!

• Guest Panel : Gladys, what do you think?

  Gladys Glover : Well, I think - if they're big enough, they're old enough.

• Guest Panel : Then, of course, there is the whole question - of the parents' consent.

  Gladys Glover : To do what?

• Pete Sheppard : Look, Gladys, please don't get mixed up in anything more. You want to turn into a freak? Now, how do you think that anything...

  Brod Clinton : Of course, there's that other program, "The People Speak". They're always looking for goofballs.

  Pete Sheppard : Now, hear that, you're a goofball.

  Brod Clinton : No, look, that's just - that's just a figure of speech, son. Look, I happen to know this fella that runs this program. Let me sound him. See what happens. Okay, honey?

  Gladys Glover : Go ahead, sound.

• Gladys Glover : [after Evan makes a pass]  I don't mind the way you're acting, exactly. What I mind is the way you give the idea you're sort of entitled.

  Evan Adams III : Maybe, I am.

  Gladys Glover : Oh! Sure. If you want to make it into a sort of business proposition.

  Evan Adams III : That's what you're doing, isn't it?

  [moves in for kiss, Gladys pushes him back] 

  Evan Adams III : If you're looking for true romances, Missy, the magazines are full of it. But, I...

  Gladys Glover : The way it looks to me, Mr. Adams, there are two kinds of people: the ones who'll do anything to make a name for themselves and the ones who'll do almost anything.

  Evan Adams III : To which are you?

  Gladys Glover : Ah, I'll let you know.

• Gladys Glover : He works on movies. Documentaries. Very interesting.

  Evan Adams III : Is it, anything?

  Gladys Glover : Is what?

  Evan Adams III : You and he.

  Gladys Glover : Oh, no.

  [looks around and sees Evan's bedroom] 

  Gladys Glover : Oh, no!

  [walks away] 

• Evan Adams III : [Snuggles up to Gladys, with his head on her shoulder]  Hello.

  Gladys Glover : What's this?

  Evan Adams III : What's what?

  [kisses Gladys' neck] 

  Gladys Glover : This.

  Evan Adams III : Nothing.

  Gladys Glover : Oh, I thought it was something.

  Evan Adams III : No.

  [takes off Gladys' earring and kisses her earlobe] 

  Gladys Glover : That's not nothing?

• Gladys Glover : It's a very interesting thing I found out. All these different things, I mean the expensive ones, like Champagne and thick steaks and silk stuff, what I mean to say is that it's very easy to get in the habit. But, then, you take like different things, like, once when I was in a boarding house, they used to give bean sandwiches for lunch and that's a habit I never could get into.

• Gladys Glover : I feel foolish. I don't like to feel foolish.

  Brod Clinton : Well, why, sugar?

  Gladys Glover : Because!

• Gladys Glover : There's only one thing you forget.

  Brod Clinton : What?

  Gladys Glover : It's a fake!

  Brod Clinton : Oh, come on.

  Gladys Glover : And not only that, it's dishonest.

• Gladys Glover : Certain people, I mean, people that know me, they're gonna know it's a fake.

  Brod Clinton : Well, what do you care?

  Gladys Glover : Well, I don't mean everybody. But, a *few* people, one, I care what they think, him, he.

• Gladys Glover : You know what's the trouble with you? You're not real.

  Brod Clinton : I'm real enough to pop you one!

  Gladys Glover : Try it.

• Gladys Glover : It isn't just making a name. What's that? It's making a name stand for something.

• Pete Sheppard : There's a lot of things... sensitive things... we could talk about and do and try for but Ican't seem to get you down to Earth.
