Henry Kenneth Alfred Russell was born on July 3, 1927 in Southampton to shoe store owner father Henry and mother Ethel. His father's bouts of violence drove Ken and his mother to the local cinemas to escape, sparking the inspiration which was to later change the future of film. Before entering the world of movies, Russell had several other careers. Educated at Pangbourne College in Berkshire, he served in the Merchant Navy and Royal Air Force - both before the age of 21. Russell then trained for five years to be a ballet dancer, but later said that by the time he had "mastered the art", he was simply "too old to dance". Russell moved into photography, regularly taking still documentary photographs of the nearby Portobello Road. Three years passed before his transition to cinematic photography in 1959.
