Despite their noticeable lack of chemistry in this lackluster film, Esther Williams and Jeff Chandler embarked on a passionate affair during the making of it. In a controversial move, Williams outed Chandler as a cross-dresser in her autobiography, "Million Dollar Mermaid," citing his penchant for wearing women's clothes as the reason she ended their relationship.
A prominent birthmark on Esther Williams' left cheek is visible throughout this film, presumably an imperfection cosmeticians obscured during her years at MGM.
Though her legendary spate of MGM musicals had come to an end two years before, Universal set this melodrama in an island locale to give Esther Williams the opportunity to don several bathing suits and swim, this time in the ocean.
Carlos Thompson's voice is dubbed by Paul Frees.
