Joel Edgerton has been chatting about the critical backlash against Netflix's Bright...
Netflix’s Christmas blockbuster movie was Bright, that starred Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, and was directed by Suicide Squad helmer David Ayer. The film cost the best part of $100m to make, and Netflix declared it a roaring success, revealing that some 11 million people watched it on the weekend it was first made available on the service. It quickly ordered Bright 2, although dropped Max Landis as the writer of the sequel.

It didn’t have as much luck with movie critics, though, who slammed the film. It earned quite savage reviews, but still seemed to find its audience.

5.3 Passenger
The disappearance of Frances Porter (Lydea Perkins) seems at first to be a run-of-the-mill missing persons case; as Morse reassures her concerned husband, Noel (Edwin Thomas) and sister, Jilly (Rosalie Craig), most such incidents are resolved quickly. Mrs Porter proves elusive, however, and Morse’s visit to the rather fabulous boutique she works at – Alice’s Marmalade Cat, which is the sort of thing Granny might have seen on her famous trip – turns up no clues apart from the identity of the vanished woman’s lover, a man named Don. Fellow sales assistant Anouska (Celeste Dodwell) also reveals that Frances borrowed some clothes from the shop to dress up for an assignation with the mystery man, a clue that will prove vital to solving this increasingly odd case.

Designated Survivor fans, have you caught today's new episode on Netflix UK? Here's a glimpse ahead at the next...
In the first season of Designated Survivor, Tom Kirkman (the legendary Kiefer Sutherland) was only the Secretary of Housing & Urban Development, but he became President Of The United States in what can only be described as a very dramatic take on King Ralph - everyone above him in the line of succession was killed in a terrorist attack that for some reason Jack Bauer was unable to prevent, and now Kirkman's the man in charge.

The TV remake of Heathers has been shelved for now...
2018 will bring us a host of new shows to take a gamble on, and one of the first was set to be the Heathers TV show.

The rebooted series was scheduled to premiere on 7th March, but it has now been pulled from the schedule. The network released a statement as to why:
Paramount Network’s original series Heathers is a satirical comedy that takes creative risks in dealing with many of society’s most challenging subjects ranging from personal identity to race and socio-economic status to gun violence. While we stand firmly behind the show, in light of the recent tragic events in Florida and out of respect for the victims, their families and loved ones, we feel the...

Two of director Philippe de Broca’s earliest renowned titles get new restorations and are available for the first time on Blu-ray, That Man From Rio (1964) and Up to His Ears (1965), the first two titles from a loose James Bond spoof trilogy featuring Jean-Paul Belmondo. Certainly ahead of his time, de Broca’s amusing adventure films are much more than the kind of lowbrow entertainment that would come to typify the genre known as spoof, and this became a notable inspiration for Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones films, particularly 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Inspired by the adventures of Belgian cartoonist Herge’s Tintin adventures (which also provided the basis for a 2011 Steven Spielberg adaptation), a prized Amazonian statue is stolen from a Parisian museum. Three such statues left South American on an expedition that involved the late father of Agnes (Francoise Dorleac) and and two colleagues. Professor Catalan...

First Time Fest co-founders Mandy Ward and Johanna Bennett with Harvey Weinstein as Gay Talese looks on Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
At the closing night awards ceremony, First Time Fest co-founders Johanna Bennett and Mandy Ward honoured Harvey Weinstein for his distinguished career and support of first-time filmmakers. The 400 Blows by François Truffaut and Kurt Vonnegut's book Cat's Cradle influenced him when he went on to distribute Cinema Paradiso. Federico Fellini and Philippe de Broca's Jean-Paul Belmondo movies That Man From Rio and Cartouche were a part of his cinema education growing up in Queens, New York, which may have equipped him for his relationship with Quentin Tarantino.
Previously fêted for their commitment to cinema were Darren Aronofsky, by Martin Scorsese, and Julie Taymor. While waiting for Harvey's arrival, I joined Gay Talese and Tony Bennett for a lively conversation on movies, the demise of burlesque and tennis...

Sixties screen siren Claudia Cardinale talks to Steve Rose about entrancing Fellini, spurning Brando – and why appearing in 135 films still isn't enough
There's nothing Claudia Cardinale hates more than staying still, but for the past two months she's had to do exactly that. She broke her foot on holiday in Tunisia and has since been holed up in her Paris flat. "It was stupid," she says, in her distinctive Mediterranean rasp. "I was playing volleyball. There was water on the edge of swimming pool, and I slipped. I like to be active, so when I have to sit for two months without going out, it's terrible. I had many places to go and I had to refuse: Venice, Kiev, Osaka. Now it's Ok. Yesterday I went out for the first time, but the weather is ugly."
Cardinale is a survivor from the era when movie giants walked the earth – most of them alongside her.
