- A fictionalized account of brothers Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm leading to the publishing of the stories for which they are now most famous is presented, that account incorporating the whimsy and fantasy of the stories themselves. It's the early nineteenth century Prussia, and the brothers have been hired by the Duke to write a comprehensive account of his family's history, only touching on those aspects of glory in wanting to impress King Wilhelm III. The Duke, in return, has provided them with housing rent-free as an advance, they only receiving payment upon the completion of the manuscript due in six months following the beginning of the commission. Jacob, in his narrow technical mindset, just wants to complete the job, he, in that mindset, unable to see that Greta Heinrich is interested in him as more than a writer in she having bought one of his technical books on German grammar. Chronically ill Wilhelm, married with two adolescent children, however, is easily distracted from this job as he is more interested in collecting fairy tales, which their telling he believes brings joy to life - especially important in war raging nearby - and which he fears will be lost forever if they are not documented. In the process of collecting those fairy tales, three of them come to life. Wilhelm has to balance his commitments, not only to the vainglorious Duke but also to Jacob and his family, against these dreams of having the fairy tales published, which entails convincing those that matter, including such people as Stossel the bookseller, that there is a market demand for such stories. Arguably, he may have to convince himself the most.—Huggo
- Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm are writing a historical manuscript for a local duke, but the project is late because Wilhelm spends his time gathering fairy tales. When Wilhelm drops part of the manuscript in a creek, catches pneumonia while retrieving it. Near death, he dreams of various characters that want to be written -- and upon his recovery, a shaken Jacob agrees to work on a book of fairy tales with him, beginning the brothers' illustrious career.
