The three cases faced by officer Antonio Saracino ( Totò ) were inspired by real cases. The case of inspector Giuseppe Mastrillo ( Nino Taranto ) is inspired by the case of inspector Cesare Mastrella, who managed a fraud to the Italian state of 750,150,000 lire in 1962. The case of the poisoned drink is inspired by the case of a man who was killed by a poisoned bitter sent by his wife's lover in August 1962. The case of inspector La Matta ( Erminio Macario ) cites the famous case of Henri Landru, a Frenchman who killed at least ten rich and lonely women in the beginning of the 20th century.
For the first time Totò plays together with more than one of his historical co-stars in a single movie: Aldo Fabrizi, Peppino De Filippo, Nino Taranto and Erminio Macario.
When colonel La Matta ( Erminio Macario ) praises Antonio Saracino ( Totò ) during their first meeting, he answers modestly that he did some mistakes too, and removes his hat. This scene is a spoof of a TV advertisement of brilliantine Linetti, aired in Italy from 1957 to 1968: actor Cesare Polacco played the role of infallible detective Rock, who answers in the same way to the praises of his assistant, stating that he did a mistake not using the brilliantine Linetti and removing his hat to show his bald head. However, Totò wasn't bald at all, that's why colonel La Matta looks at him confused in the movie sketch. Cesare Polacco worked together with Totò in 6 movies, including Totò's first movie Fermo con le mani (1937).
