Could have done without the canned laughter
CuriosityKilledShawn15 August 2005
In this cartoon Pinky is happily lazing about in a hammock when a snooty narrator interrupts and prompts him into doing some DIY instead guiltless relaxation. At first Pinky tries to make something out of wood but ends up sawing part of his house off. And then his tail.

While trying to relax in bed he is put off by the sound of his shower leaking. The snooty narrator encourages him to fix it but old Pinky has no idea how to so he just tapes up the shower door and lets it slowly fill up.

Finally, tiring of the narrator intrusive nagging he loads up a blunderbuss and scares him away. It's quite funny but don't ask me why there is canned laughter. It's completely pointless.

A Pink Panther cartoon that didn't really feel like a Pink Panther cartoon
TheLittleSongbird14 April 2013
That is a shame as I love the Pink Panther and his cartoons. Shocking Pink is hardly bad, but I couldn't help feeling disappointed(though even a disappointing Pink Panther cartoon is more watchable than animation nowadays in comparison). It has things to like about it certainly. The animation is very nicely done, it's simple but colourful and smooth, and Pinky is drawn well. The iconic music is still catchy and infectious, never irritating in that respect. The ending is fun and so are one or two of the gags like the one with the shower. For all the good assets seen though what didn't work for me were issues that I just couldn't ignore. The canned laughter track had absolutely no point being there and I do agree with the commentator who felt as though they were being forced to laugh, I did get that feel as well and I shouldn't be feeling it with Pink Panther as he and his cartoons are funny all on their own. Aside from the odd moment, the humour wasn't particularly funny, much of it was predictable and lacking in energy. The canner laughter didn't things at all, and neither did the omnipresent narrator, who was decent enough to start with but quickly became irritating. The biggest disappointment though was how little Pinky properly got to shine. He is a witty, cool and clever character, but you only see this in the ending, the rest was him being irritated by the narrator and the DIY and he just seemed out of sorts. All in all, not great, not bad, kind of mixed here. It looks good, the music is still great and the odd gag is fun, but the canned laughter and narration didn't add very much and Pinky's personality didn't come through enough. 5/10 Bethany Cox

The Only Thing Shocking About This...

Pink Panther Odyssey Part VIII

...is that they decided to stick with the weird disembodied voice shtick from Pinkfinger which doesn't really work. On the plus side, the panther himself seems just as annoyed about it as the viewer is this time which is oddly cathartic. We follow the disgruntled beast as he's urged on by the voice to do various odd jobs around the house. It's diverting enough but Pink is much better against a visible figure. Also the less said about the sixties live-action laugh track the better!

Laugh Tracks Are An Insult To The Viewer
ccthemovieman-122 May 2007
An annoying narrator and - worse - a laugh track begins this cartoon on a sour note. The narrator is chastising the Pink Panther for lying around, not doing anything. He suggests going to the basement, getting some tools and making something. There is some unfunny gag with the light switch and then the Panther saws part of his house off as a buzz saw goes out of control. The Panther pouts lies down on is bed, but once again is chastised. This time, the aggravating narrator suggest fixing leaky shower facet rather than spending big bucks hiring a plumber. Of course, that doesn't go right, either.

Having a laugh track on a cartoon, for cryin' out loud, is ridiculous and an insult to every viewer....as if telling us when we should laugh. Worse, this cartoon wasn't funny in the first place.

This might be the worst Pink Panther animated short I've ever seen.

Before there was "Home Improvement," there was SHOCKING PINK
alvin8116 February 2006
The 12th cartoon in the series continues the trend of other characters talking to the silent feline. In this case, it is character actor Larry Storch (of "F Troop" fame) mocking a fantastic cockney British accent, and harassing the relaxing panther. Ol' Pinky is trying to enjoy a quiet Sunday afternoon, while Storch badgers him into doing some housework.

The Pink Panther encounters several mishaps around the house (Tim Allen would be proud), but Storch persists. Finally, after nearly six minutes of irritating the feline, Pinky loads a blunderbuss and gives the impressions he will blow away Storch.

Funny and smart, SHOCKING PINK is a nice early entry in the series. Friz Freleng had not quite abandoned the dialogue that soon became but a memory in this successful series.

Like most "Pink Panther" cartoons that were broadcast on NBC-TV, there is a laugh track present that only reinforces the fact these cartoons were aimed at adults as well as children. Though generally despised in America, in theory there is really nothing wrong with a few additional chuckles. Surprisingly, the giggles in SHOCKING PINK are not particularly intrusive. Besides, laughing matters.

Panther in trouble
Horst_In_Translation19 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a 7-minute cartoon directed by the legendary Friz Freleng from pretty much exactly 50 years ago and it stars the world's most famous panther. He is busy doing things at home this time, so no handyman won't have to come. However, this may not be the best idea as he gets in trouble with light-bulbs, showers, saws and some more. So he gets wet, keeps falling down the stairs and even accidentally cuts off his own tail. Poor panther. Still I have to say I did not find this one too funny. the ending was weird too. Everybody thought he would shoot the narrator, even the narrator himself, but then he shoots the light-bulb? Or is the light-bulb the actual narrator. I am not sure about that. Anyway, all in all I hoped this would be better. Not recommended.

Pink Panther does home improvement.
OllieSuave-0073 September 2016
The Pink Panther does home improvement and decides to heed a narrator's advice to get off his duff and work around the house. This leads one funny mishap after the other, from a runaway buzz-saw to a light that comes on and off automatically in the basement. Classic and funny facial impressions from the panther will serve up some laughs and his tactics in trying to fix stuff, from putting tape around the shower door to accidentally sawing one third of his house off.

Very funny stuff here. It's non-stop entertainment and laughs - great for the whole family!

watchable D.I.Y. spoof
awblundell1 May 2003
Pink panther cartoons are certainly consistent. At their worst they are at least watchable. At their best they are, well, watchable. This is an average one.

A disembodied narrator tells PP to stop lazing around and get on with some odd jobs around the house. The results are predictably worse than leaving well alone, but every time PP gives up that little voice starts nagging at him again...

¿You're a Collector... Firearm?

During its Beginnings, Pinky showed his simplistic but effective Humorous Skills, even a simple situation like going down a ladder became somewhat hilarious here, Shocking Pink although a little different, it was quite effective for me to laugh, and come on, a little variation to Sometimes it doesn't go bad, right?.

Here an Annoying Narrator torments Pinky so that she stops slacking off, she herself gets angry every time she is given orders, but finally she decides to get to work in her little attended house, in which she fixes some errors but with devastating results for our Panther.

Of course, some jokes are present, like the one about the Ladder and the spotlight (which was quite funny in my opinion) and also the multiple mistakes of the panther are funny in my opinion, of course, not everything is perfect, the cartoon is not It has the best rhythm that we can say, it starts slowly and continues with a moderately moderate rhythm, although that is not saying much.

The Animation is clearly simplistic, the drawings do not attract much attention but they are pleasant to look at, the animation is quite good, it is fluid and coordinates very well with the sound.

As usual in the First Pinky shorts, the main theme of the series is not repeated endlessly, but rather, variations of it accompanied by original music composed by Bill Lava, this does not work at all but the Jazz Rhythm of the music is very nice.

In itself, Shocking Pink is not the best that the series can offer, it is not very good in terms of Rhythm but it makes up for it with some laughs along the way, the Jazz Style Music, and the Good Animation help to favor entertainment, in conclusion, fun despite its faults.

For everything I said above, Shocking Pink gets an 8.

When any animal sporting a tail operates a . . .
pixrox130 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
. . . power saw, it will inevitably cut off its own tail, as depicted several times during SHOCKING PINK. I myself ruined a perfectly good extension cord while using a electric-powered hedger, when I made too complete of a circle and cut halfway through the cord with my trimming gizmo. However, I agree with the Pink Panther that seven and a half bucks per hour is far too much to reimburse a master plumber just to clean out a pipe. So every couple years I need to grab my monkey wrench and disassemble the pipes under our bathroom sink to clean out 24 months of shaving debris. (At least some of my guys usually put the adjacent seat down!) This means I've saved about $37.50 the past decade alone on plumbing repairs!
