According to the French magazine Télé 7 Jours, the TV series took two years of preparation, eight months of filming, and three months of dubbing. The crew during the shoot varied in size between one hundred and two hundred members. Twenty-seven tailors and shoemakers were constantly on hand on the set to make and mend the costumes. Three replicas of antique Greek ships were constructed on the basis of archaeological plans from a basic hull with a keel, which took a team of master carpenters a couple of months. Odysseus' vessel alone cost more than 20 million lire (US $ 32,000 at the time). A motor was hidden inside the ship to make it easier to navigate.
