One of the LOST Jack Webb shows

I got the opportunity of seeing this series recently on a late night cable channel, but this seldom seen produced Jack Webb crime-drama series hasn't been seen since the last time it was showed(and this was back in the mid-80's when it ran on cable's USA Network--the series that is). However, this is the two hour pilot for the TV-series which originally ran in the early 1970's. This show was like the other TV shows Webb produced since it went strictly by the book in procedures and manuels and to apprehend the baddies who were braking the law. David Janssen portrays a government U.S. Treasury official who was in charge of the overall operations of the U.S. Treasury Service. He and the others that worked in his department were in charge of catching those individuals who were in the act of suspicious activities(including counterfeiting and in some of the episodes drug laundering and armed robbery,etc.).

Catch it when it comes on your local cable channel.

Intriguing but humorless.

Warning: Spoilers
Just stating the facts that this 90 minute pilot for the short-lived TV series has its moments but had me quite bored at times. David Jansen is a treasury agent out to crash a drug ring, code name Cobra, ironically the nickname of the female head of a drug ring on "All My Children" a decade after this aired. Jansen uses Lana Wood (a member of the ring) to get the goods on it, promising to help her get a lesser charge once the ring is busted.

As this was directed by "Dragnet" star Jack Webb, it's ironic to see why it's so direct, completely dramatic, with fast spoken dialog moving the investigation along, no time for nonsense. That's supposed to add reality to this expose of how the treasury department works, and it's intriguing but not really grabbing the viewer thanks to the by the book presentation. Good character actors in support, but the spark that made me interested in following the series that came months after this aired is absent.
