Charlie joins the Rebels gang. Vera and Brian try to get her dad to join the over 60's club. Charlie runs away from home and the Rebels confront Tommy.
While Vera and Brian are away for a few days, they book Tommy into a home. He overhears them and thinks it is permanent. He goes to his friends to ask if he can stay there, and finds he has just died. Then he learns that the home is temporary.
Charlie is invited to try out for the local football club. He has to decline because he doesn't have £20 to buy new boots. Tommy pawns something very dear to him to get the money for him.
Brian sets up Emily Armitage with Tommy in the hope of marrying him off. Tommy contacts Ethel, an old flame. When she shows up in a Rolls and a chauffeur, he proposes to her. Charlie has a stalker called Specky Sonia that he can't avoid.
Tommy takes Charlie to France to visit his father's grave from WWI. Along the way there are a few mishaps like dropping the passports in the English Channel.
Tommy and Charlie see the milkman go into Vera's house. They assume she is having an affair and Charlie tells his mum, she tells a friend, and so on, until the whole area knows.
Charlie tries to order a beer and chat up two ladies at the pub. Dave wants to get back with Betty and be a proper dad for Charlie. Tommy wants to be a grandfather and keeps the pressure on Vera and Brian to have a family.
The boys decide to start a business of buying and selling. They make so many mistakes, often selling the items for less than they paid. They end up bankrupt and Charlie will have to look for a full time job.
It's Tommys 72nd birthday and he thinks everyone forgot, until all kinds of people drop by to wish him well. He decides to buy a used suit for himself, but loses the money. Charlie finds it and returns it and Tommy buys his suit.
Charlie can't find a job and his mum decides they will emigrate to Australia. When she tells him they are leaving, Charlie runs away from home. The Salvation Army notify the police that a boy under 18 has turned up, and Tommy brings him back.
