Old style country romp
augustian6 July 2009
This film is one of a series of offerings collectively called Danish Mazurka from writer/director, John Hilbard. It is described as a sex comedy but anyone expecting naked romps through the pretty Danish countryside will be rather disappointed. It is similar in style to the British "Confessions" films but with less panache. In fact some elements could be described as slapstick.

The opening scene shows a surveyor being unceremoniously thrown into a stream by a group of local women. The fight is now on between the bigwigs of authority who want a new road and the local villagers who don't. Another official is sent to the village and soon love blossoms between him and the very fetching female schoolteacher. There are several sub-plots running through the film but without an understanding of Scandinavian languages they are difficult to follow. Suffice to say that it is all resolved in the end.

The acting is of the old school with movements such as falling down that would not look out of place in a Chaplin film. There is a brief bit of nudity but not nearly enough to compensate for a very old-fashioned looking film. I have a soft spot for location filming and the location did have a rustic charm so despite the above comments I have given this film 4 stars.
