The civil war in Russia, 1921. In a small town Revske (Revska prototype, according to the author, was the city Snovsk) grandparents have staying with their grandson, schoolboy from Moscow, Misha Polyakov. He and his friend Genka Petrov accidentally got a dirk that belonged to an officer from the battleship "Empress Maria". The dirk linked with some mystery - a deceased former officer of the battleship - a White Guard, and now the leader of the gang, Valery Sigizmundovich Nikitskiy is also looking for it. Misha's friend, the commander of the Red Army Polevoy tries whatever the cost to save a dirk, and Misha helps him. Misha and Genka go to Moscow.

Passed a year after the events which were described in the first part. Misha, Gena and their friend, the young pianist Slava are going to hunt down a Filin, a man who shunned Polevoy. At first, the boys manage to scare the Filin and his mysterious companion. During the second surveillance they encounter waif Misha Korovin. Korovin participated in surveillance of Filin and his partner. He steals the sheath for a dirk from Borka-Zhila, Filin's son.
