  María : [sobbing]  You bastard! They were right about you!

  Juan : [intrigued]  Oh? What did they say?

  María : [sobbing uncontrollably]  That you're a... you're a... you're a cruel, selfish, sadistic, mad-in-the-head psychotic bastard!

  Juan : God! I must get away from here! Away from your sick mother and your crazy sisters!

  María : You're mad!

  Juan : [softly]  Maybe.

  María : And you're not going anywhere! My mother won't let you!

• María : [awaiting him, sitting casually on chair]  I hope nobody saw you come up.

  [as he closes door:] 

  María : Where did you leave Mother?

  Juan : [beaming smile]  Dead. In the garden.

  [approaches] 

  Juan : Are you happy?

  [slips coat from her bare shoulder] 

  María : I'm all right. You sure no one saw you come up?

  [she comes to the bed, and slips off her coat] 

  Juan : something began to go to pieces in my brain. And something else... began to grow. Hatred!

  [grabs her] 

  Juan : It was painful, but when I accepted it... I felt better!

  María : [jumps up from bed]  Why do you talk like that? Where's my Mother?

  Juan : [takes her by the shoulders, pulls her back onto bed]  I told you: Dead. She's dead. If there's none of you here, there'll be no case. And you're not going to be anywhere.

  [jumps up] 

  Juan : I'm irresponsible! That's what

  [points at her:] 

  Juan : your doctors have said. I don't know the difference between right and wrong. And you know why? There is no difference. There are only roles!
