The children's song "This Old Man" appears in almost every episode of the Columbo series, sometimes as background music, but most often with Lt. Columbo singing, humming, or whistling the tune. This is the only episode where the murderer (Jackie Cooper as political candidate Nelson Hayward) is heard using it; in this case, he is whistling it as he prepares to film a campaign commercial.
Katey Sagal, who plays a secretary at the campaign headquarters, is the daughter of this episode's director, Boris Sagal.
The girlfriend, Linda Johnson, is shown many times wearing a red dress with a pattern of the "Scarlet Letter" (i.e., "A") on it.
When Columbo gets his car repaired the mechanic presents him with a bill for $65.25. This is the equivalent of roughly $415 in 2022.
Whenever Columbo is asked if he's ever considered getting another car, his answer is always the same: "I got another car; my wife drives it, but that's nothing special. It's just for transportation." He's asked this question as well, earlier in "Etude in Black" and "Requiem for a Falling Star."
