You've got tongue in cheek in all these blues.

Warning: Spoilers
While considered a poor man's Bette Davis during her career at Warner Brothers, time has been more than kind to Ida Lupino. It's ironic that in this campy TV mystery movie, she seems to be doing a Bette Davis imitation, and enjoying every minute of it. I'm wondering however if the blue tinting of practically every scene serves a purpose. There's a boat scene where everybody's faces indeed look like blueberries, and when they get to Lupino's estate, the tint continues, all except for the red staircase that Lupino makes her grand entrance down.

The major mystery concerns detectives Les Crane, David Hartman and Hagan Beggs hired by the presumably drunken Terry-Thomas to find an elusive billionaire. Everywhere they turn, they seem to hit a dead end, ending up on Lupino's spooky island along with her geeky son Hack Weston and her three daughters- Faith, Hope and...you guessed it...Charity. So from there, it's a sitcom like situation for these men, finding hidden passageways, a creepy laboratory and some wild critters that only a crazy broad like Lupino's off the beam matriarch would have. In many of her later films, Lupino was photographed rather unattractively, but here, is quite striking.

I wonder if her years directing sitcoms like "Gilligan's Island" made Lupino choose to overplay the Tallulah Bankhead and Bette Davis nature of this role. Certain elements of the humor would definitely appeal to pre-teen boys (my age at the time this was released), especially a very funny ink blot test. The art direction is closer to old Universal horror films (making Lupino sort of a female version of Karloff or Lugosi), and the tiny bit of sexuality with the three men equally matched with Lupino's daughters very subtle. I can only recommend this for its child like goofiness, and for classic movie fans, it's a nice change of pace from the dramatic and humorless characters Lupino usually played.

OK, here's how to get this rare movie!
shakspryn28 May 2017
All the reviewers express a wish for a copy of this movie, and there are probably many more who are interested. Here's how to get it: there is a DVD set of three old (1940's) "I Love A Mystery" films, which is put out by Onesmedia. Now, they include the 1973 film in the set, as a fourth film. It is available on Amazon, and I imagine other places as well.

For some unknown reason, the 1973 film was actually made in 1967, but did not air on TV until 1973! This is very puzzling, especially given such a talented cast. Perhaps it was a pilot for a TV series that didn't get picked up? But that's an awfully long time between the making of the movie and airing it.

Loved IT
crt05242 December 2005
I can remember as a kid getting up just before the movie would start or staying up late at night just to watch the movie.

From the opening scene with the bug on the neck to the end... it was pure laughter

It made me laugh and I absolutely loved Don Knotts at the end with the lion. And to see that HE was the dad the beautiful triples, Faith, Hope and Charity, who would have guessed that???

It's probably one of my favorites in memory!

I have looked high and low to find this on prerecorded media but have had no luck. I would love to find a DVD or VHS copy of this movie.

If any one knows where it can be purchased, PLEASE let me know!!!

Worth seeing
robolly10 February 2002
Saw this when it was first broadcast in 1973 and than again perhaps 8 years later. It's based on an old radio series about three insurance investigators. This film is played for laughs, and the opening sequence is hilarious, but the pace kind of slows down after that. Still, as a whole quite amusing and fun.

I Love this movie!

This is one of the most memorable movies from the 70's. I saw this when I was about 7 years old at 2 am in the morning and I remembered it for years after! David Hartman and Don Knotts maintain levity as they investigate a mystery in a creepy old mansion. In search of a missing billionaire, the detectives embark on a journey through the mysterious and colorful mansion which chimes of a baby crying. Is the baby real and stuck in the ventilation system or is it just a prank? Watch the mysteries unfold as Don Knotts bumbles and stumbles around in his typical skittish fashion. Appreantly, this gem of a little-known movie was themed after an earlier radio series of the same title. I loved it and wish it would be released officially!

Thumbs up for I Love A Mystery
chbuttercup15 March 2013
I too saw this as a child and totally loved it! Perhaps it's my warped sense of humor! Lol. I lucked out and saw it a couple more times in my teens, and even managed to Audio Tape it...anyone else ever do that? Hartmann and Knotts' characters have stuck with me, the wonderfully twisted surprise ending, the great verbal word play between the characters...just fantastic! Good, clean fun, adorable characters, and an engaging mystery. Well written, well acted and just what I think we could use more of in the movie industry for family enjoyment. I would just love to find this movie again, and have been searching for it on VHS or DVD for years now. Please Powers That Be, make it available!!!!!
