Bring this film to DVD
palomine24 January 2009
I am with you 100 percent on the need to have I.F. Stone's Weekly released on DVD. I have been campaigning for this for so long that the first time I proposed this, I recommended that it be released on Beta. (Just kidding, but not far from the truth.) I first saw the film in journalism class at the University of Michigan in 1976, and later it was shown on the local PBS station. But as far as I know, it's never been released on VHS or DVD. How do we get the ball rolling? Perhaps Jerry Bruck could help, or whoever owns the copyright. It just isn't right that this wonderful film is not available to the general public.

Tom Wicker's narration was terrific. And there were lots of interesting interviews with subscribers. Also, there was footage of Izzy describing his trip to the U.S. Geological Survey. I think it was for information about a an underground nuclear test that had been hushed up by the government. He described how THRILLED they were to see a reporter, because reporters rarely ventured into their office. One of many hilarious anecdotes recounted in the film.

Rare doc about a great American journalist
davestone4718 July 2005
For anyone interested in the free press and U.S. politics, this documentary is a rare gem. The last time I saw it on the big screen was probably 1973 or 1974, at the legendary Orson Welles Cinema in Boston. It ran with the independent short "A Political Cartoon," (which in the interest of full disclosure, was a project I worked on.) I knew nothing about Izzy Stone, and it's coincidental that we share a last name... He was certainly not a relative of mine. But this was really an eye-opener for audiences during the period immediately following Watergate. "I.F. Stone's Weekly" is a must for us Political Junkies among film buffs. If you have seen "OutFoxed," "Bush's Brain," or "Farenheit 911," it's time to stir up some demand for a DVD release of this doc. With wonderful footage of the great journalist at work among a forest of file folders, and some very funny stuff with one of his professional heirs, the young Carl Bernstein.

I. F. Stone's Weekly. . . Where is the DVD?
rpwalsh-221 January 2016
This documentary should be mandatory for anyone working in media or government.

Izzy's tactic of not attending the meetings but reading the rush transcripts is still viable today. It is too easy to lose focus in the room.

My filing system emulates Izzy's. But since I do not have any interns to run clip files it is a train wreck.

I also have been shouting about the need for this film to be released in DVD for many years.

I saw it when I wandered in to a junior college journalism class in the mid-70's. It was running on 16mm.
