Tame-ish episode from the final season
After the atmospheric and intriguing season opener 'Sleepwalker', this one sadly does seem to fall a bit flat - though, to be fair, there are some good bits along the way.
Caroll Baker stars as a wheelchair-bound woman left in a pretty-much deserted apartment block while most of the other occupants are away -vacationing due to an unexpected heatwave over the holiday weekend. But, there also seems to be a lady-killer on the loose and in residence in the empty block.
Although this episode tries to emulate the premise of the earlier classic story 'I'm the Girl He Wants to Kill', it never really delivers the same levels of suspense and tension, and there seem to be long periods where very little seems to be going on at all.
Caroll Baker isn't the liveliest guest star either - but, to be fair, she is in a wheelchair for nearly the whole episode, which limits the character's full interaction. There's a nice cameo from Ronald Lacey as the rather odd janitor - shortly to find international fame of course in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's good to see the reliable T.P. McKenna return too (last seen in Thriller's opening story) as the obligatory gruff and dismissive detective.
In true Thriller style, we only get to see the killer's feet walking around for most of the episode (always a nice touch) - and there's the usual expected twist at the end. Once the story is wrapped up though, it does seem to end rather suddenly - a little more explanation would have been good. But then, if you're watching on DVD, there's always the consolation of the hilarious American title sequence to watch as an extra once the credits have rolled!
All in all though, this is ultimately one of the weakest Thriller stories from a rather patchy final season.
