And so to Uncle Jess Franco's apparent take on the Dorian Grey saga – 'loose' might describe the link best. Who else but Lina Romay, rarely fully clothed, plays the dual role of Doriana and her unnamed twin sister, born as Siamese twins and separated at birth. The result is that while her sister is mentally defective and locked away in a sanatorium (owned by 'the mysterious Doctor Orloff' who, bashfully, fails to make an appearance), Doriana is apparently sexually unmotivated and keeps her youthful appearance living on blood provided by victims brought to her by her servant Ziros (Raymond Hardy).

And that seems to be the story-line. Amidst the truly beautiful locations there is, for the time by 1976, a hugely increased graphic quality to the regular sex scenes, most of which feature Romay (either solo or with a friend). Franco's camera seems more preoccupied than ever with his wife's genitalia and this becomes more than the usual distraction – it is too invasive, too graphic. It goes someway beyond hard-core scenes featured in such films. The results are almost genealogical! As ever, the acting is uninhibited, especially from Romay who often looks ravishing for the most part, taking into account the explicit, unsophisticated and unflattering sex scenes. The story-line is a slight variation on 'Vampyros Lesbos' or 'Female Vampire', but more gratuitous. The results are uneven; the story itself could have done with more exploration other than in the opening narration, whilst the hard-core elements could have been used more sparingly. Yet this is Jess Franco – who am I to cast aspersions on his very personal vision, other than registering my own personal opinion? Even anticipating the moment when the sisters meet has to be done bearing in mind his penchant for the unexpected. And when it comes, it is perfunctory and brief, especially compared with the X-rated delights before.

He makes great use of a local Spanish storm, the cameras lingering on the huge drops of rain crashing down on usually sun-soaked pathways, and through the ornate windows of the magnificent buildings. Unlike a lot of the intimate flesh on display, that is something you never get bored of looking at.

Scary and hairy

This film, as other reviewers have noted, is pretty much a remake of "Female Vampire" from a few years before. What's amazing is that the non-sexual scenes are actually more erotic than the porn scenes are. The dreamy, misty exteriors of the noblewoman's château contrast rather jarringly with some of the hairiest genitalia ever committed to celluloid. Seriously, Lina Romay was hot in her day, but she sports a freaking rainforest in this one. At one point, I took my eyes off the screen for a few seconds during an oral sex scene, and when I looked back Franco had zoomed in so close that I spent a few seconds wondering "what the f*ck is that???!" before I realized that the scene hadn't changed and I was still looking at a tongue and female genitalia. For a moment I thought it was some kind of sea monster. Hair fetishists rejoice, for you have found your "Citizen Kane."

Lady Doriana Grey (Lina Romay, who else?) haunts a castle while her twin sister has been under the care of Dr. Orloff in his asylum, but we never see him. And we do know they have a strange psychic connection beyond their similar looks.

That's not the only problem Doriana has.

It turns out that she can't properly experience le petite mort, as they say, and her lovers end up taking the big sleep as a result of making love to her. That's what keeps both of the sisters young, but it's the bliss - and feelings of life running out - that are making the other sister even more unhinged.

Also known as Die Marquise von Sade, this has Monica Swinn as the reporter who figures this out and Raymond Hardy is also in it. He was Romay's husband at the time and let that walk around your brain because this entire movie feels like Jess making love to his muse - and future wife - with his camera, every zoom being a thrust, every long look at her body a longing sigh either in his heart or probably loins, a union of just the two of them making tender love through the glass lens, rainbow in the skyline behind her, dead woman in the bathtub, multiple Linas into infinity.

Also - it's pretty much Female Vampire, but you're either going to love this or think Franco is a hack.

DAS BILDNIS DER DORIANA GRAY aka DORIANA GREY (Jesus Franco, 1976) ***

While I had always been intrigued by the plot (maybe because I've a twin brother myself:)!) of this, my 25th Jess Franco movie, and the fact that it was inspired – if ever so loosely, as is his norm – on Oscar Wilde's literary classic 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray', I was a bit wary of approaching the film in view of its graphic depiction of sexuality which, this time around, can ONLY be described as pornographic. Well, surprisingly enough, I didn't hate it because of this and, in a strange way, it was kind of refreshing to watch the real thing as opposed to its bland/fake representation in most mainstream films – though it does overstay its welcome, in the long run, despite the relatively brief running time.

The narration and the various conversations between Lina Romay and Monica Swinn (lending it a vaguely intellectual slant), coupled with the natural beauty of the settings, are the best of it, in my opinion…not that there's much else to look up to:). I also liked the eclectic, and lyrical quality of the soundtrack comprised of Walter Baumgartner's sitar-infused score and the 'invading' audio effects of the various natural elements that are present all around Chateau Grey. Besides, the clarity of the DVD transfer (marred only by a curious stop-motion effect every once in a while, possibly the result of some missing frames), the muted color scheme, and the frank sexual content makes it feel like a product from some two decades later – which is a good or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it! What I mean to say by this last statement is that the film was totally removed from the Franco of the early 1960s or his work for Harry Alan Towers (which are perhaps the periods I admire the most, or have most affinity with) and, if anything, is probably a very good indication of where his cinema was really heading to, starting from the mid-70s up till the present day.

DORIANA GREY gives Lina Romay what is possibly her greatest role(s), though the mad sister is somewhat annoyingly one-note (despite her frequent rendition of a delicate ditty); the Lady Grey character, on the other hand, was quite well-sketched, compelled to love her partners to death – gradually becoming more bestial (reaching its apex in the disquieting 'murder' of Ziros' girlfriend, aided by him, and later his own messy demise). Unfortunately, however, the all-important confrontation between the two sisters feels rather hurried and, consequently, is not as effective as it should have been; in fact, the pace bogs down during the whole last section and the film ends on a mysterious (did she masturbate herself to death, too?!) and abrupt note. By the way, why, if the film was transferred to DVD from the original negatives, are there no credit titles at all?!

The film is considered by some as virtually a remake of an earlier Lina Romay vehicle, FEMALE VAMPIRE (1973), which I've yet to see; also, in DORIANA GREY, Franco inserts (for no good reason!) his recurring Dr. Orloff character whose function here, however, is marginal at best and adds next to nothing to the proceedings! In the end, the formal attractiveness of the film (an Erwin C. Dietrich production) makes for a very interesting contrast, I think, with the crude, almost inconsequential but more fervently experimental and personal films from his Robert De Nesle period.

The newly-recorded English dubbing feels too studied on the whole; the narration, at least, comes off as appropriately detached (though the original German language would definitely have been preferable, as evidenced by the brief subtitled snippets featured in the documentaries elsewhere on the DVD). This being my first opportunity to check out VIP's 'The Official Jess Franco Collection', I'd say that the extras were pretty well done. There was some initial disappointment regarding Erwin Dietrich's comments during the restoration featurette not being subtitled (though sections of it are reproduced 'correctly' in other parts of the supplementary section). The numerous pieces on JACK THE RIPPER (1976) make it sound reasonably enticing, apart from the excessive violence, and they also stress what sort of work must go into the production of a DVD – especially when an extensive restoration is necessary. As for DORIANA GREY itself, we do get three brief interview segments with Dietrich, Franco and Romay, which go into only the most preliminary details about the production, though they are still nice to have. The copious trailers are fairly hilarious: I couldn't help but wonder, for instance, how the notorious horse-mating scenes from Walerian Borowczyk's LA BETE (1975) found their way into Dietrich's COME PLAY WITH ME 2 (1980)! Also, from the cast/crew bios I learnt that Jess and Lina took some time before forming their real-life partnership due to their commitments to other partners.

There are some who almost regret that a non-hardcore variant of DORIANA GREY is not readily available (though I'd think it would be virtually impossible to edit satisfactorily, since it would doubtless compromise its 'construction' rather drastically!): considering that the film's sex scenes – some of which are quite erotic – go into such gynaecological detail, for lack of a better word, it comes as no surprise at all that Franco opted to operate the camera on this film himself – under his nom-de-plume of David Khunne!

Mindless pornography

DORIANA GREY is another worthless pornographic outing from cult director Jess Franco, here shooting in Switzerland with the aid of his mainstay wife and actress Lina Romay. This is essentially another version of the FEMALE VAMPIRE story, with Romay playing the dual role of a woman and her evil twin who literally sucks the lifeblood out of her victims. It's only very loosely connected to the Oscar Wilde novel despite the title; in essence this is all about the pornography, with one languid sex scene after another. Romay seems to spend the whole running time writhing naked on her bed and occasionally walking around in her diaphonous nightdress. It's all rather lame and ordinary, neither titillating nor well-plotted enough to classifying as a 'proper' movie.

Starts off okay, but turns into pointless porn eventually

"Die Marquise von Sade" or "Doriana Grey" or "Das Bildnis der Doriana Gray" is a Swiss movie from 1976, so this one had its 40th anniversary last year and it is among the lesser known works by writer and director Jesús Franco. As the title already tells us, it is one of his German-language movies and there are more of these than you would expect, several collaborations with Erwin C. Dietrich among these. This one we have here is pretty short, under 80 minutes even like some other works by Franco. The star here is Lina Romay, Franco's muse again, and looking at the plot it sounds like a challenging role for her as she plays 2 very different identical twin sisters here. And apart from her looks which are good as always, she also makes a positive impact in the film early on. But the longer the movie runs, the more pointless it becomes unfortunately The story gets sacrificed for the sake of one explicit sex scene following the next. This film is described as an adult movie here on IMDb and this says it all basically. There are many many Franco films with lots of explicit scenes, but hardly any of them are considered adult, so even for Franco's standards, he is taking it to the next level here in terms of sex scenes and all the explicit stuff. Crime/Dead characters also play a role in here as many other times with Franco too, but honestly story-telling was never really his strength and his film live through the sex appeal and maybe also because of the forbidden fruit aspect that is sometimes in there. You don't feel angry at the killer really or you don't want people to catch him really if he has a sexual connection with some of the protagonists etc. Sucks that I mist admit that of all the Franco stuff I have seen (and it was quite a bit), this is among the worst works by him. Major thumbs-down and I don't recommend seeing it to anybody.

Eerie Transcendental Porn

Doriana Grey should please Franco's admirers, leaving others alternately bored, confused, and aroused in spite of themselves. As with others of the director's films, there's a dreamlike quality to the proceedings, with wealthy and ennui-afflicted recluse Doriana strolling leisurely through her home or staring at the sky between sexual encounters played out to tranquil sitar music.

Some of the actors seem to be playing their parts in a trance, as if hypnotized before shooting, like the cast of Herzog's Heart of Glass. The English dubbing, too, is mostly monotone, which only enhances, rather than hurts, the timeless, otherworldly atmosphere, with dialogue ranging from the seemingly lofty ("It is the destiny of all beauty to be destroyed") to the simply lewd ("Go down on me").

The DVD, as of writing, has long gone out of print, but Franco enthusiasts are encouraged to look for this one. The staring, frightening lust expressed in Lina Romay's eyes alone is worth at least one visit to her château.

Is it porn? is it exploitation? Or is it Franco?

I can't help asking these questions while watching most of Franco's movies from the late seventies, early eighties. And this one is a good example of this period in his career.

If you have seen Vampyros Lesbos or Female Vampire (a.k.a. Erotikill) you basically know the story. In Vampyros Lesbos there's a stunning vampire girl (Soledad Miranda) who rather sucks the blood out of other females than out of men and in the end dies.

In Female Vampire there's the same eternally young girl this time sucking on genitalia instead of necks to keep her youth and satisfy her hunger. She also dies in the end, although she commits suicide if I remember correctly. Alternate versions of this movie have the vampire girl actually drinking blood to bypass censorship.

Doriana Grey, filmed 3 years later and again featuring the ravishing Lina Romay playing lead, basically recycles the same story but doesn't make any compromises.

Doriana Grey, an eternal youth, is living all alone up in a castle with her mute servant and keeps her youth by sucking the life out of innocent girls with the occasional man on the menu. In the end she satisfies herself and dies, floating in a small swimming pool, just as the Female Vampire dies playing with herself in a bath filled with blood.

This brings me back to my three basic questions.

Is it porn?

Sure, it is. I wouldn't call this family entertainment. You get a lot of masturbation scenes (and I mean a lot!), a couple of lesbian scenes and some man-woman action. There are extreme close-ups of female genitalia and scenes that can only be considered as hardcore porn.

On the other hand, most of the sexual partners of Miss Grey die and she is not having any fun, at least, according to the story she's not supposed to have. I'm not an expert on porno-storylines but I don't find it very erotic to see people die after having sex. So, in some way, this is hardly an erotic movie.

Is it exploitation?

Definitely. It is a prima example of seventies erotic cinema from the seventies. It might not be very erotic nowadays, but it was shot to be.

Is it Franco?

Affirmative. Although it's more explicit than earlier Franco movies, it still contains some of his trademarks:

  • Out-of-focus camera work. Many scenes have Franco play with the focus, making many parts very confusing and giving it a dream-like quality.


  • Zoom in - zoom out. Franco has often been critized for using the zoom lens too often. Others defend the director, saying he only did that during a short period of his career (i.e. 1968-1971). Still, in this movie there's a lot of zooming going on.


  • Completely useless shots. This is one of my favorite Franco trademarks, the ability to move the camera to a completely useless part of the scenery, focusing on rain pouring down or a leaf against the dark sky. This can be explained by Franco's own words, claiming to be a voyeur. He doesn't only focus on female genitalia, he's also a voyeur of the beauty of the ordinary world.


  • Storyline. I've already discussed the similarity between this movie and other Franco movies like Vampyros Lesbos and Female Vampire, but there's more. He frequently uses characters that are mute or have a speaking disability (e.g. Lina Romay plays a mute vampire in Female Vampire), in Doriana Grey the servant is a mute who used to be a protest singer (!); a girl locked in asylum, telepathically connected to someone in the outside world. This can be traced back to Murnau's Nosferatu, but it is also a recurring storyline in Franco's movies. And then there's the doctor in the asylum who goes by the name of Dr. Orlof, a name you'll find as early as 1959 (The Awful Dr. Orlof). Dr. Orlof in turn seems like a reference to Murnau's Nosferatu again (Count Orlok).


So in the end, what have I just seen? A typical Franco movie who continues to move towards pure sex movies and leaving the horror genre altogether, keeping up with the zeitgeist. Definitely a must for Franco fans but not a very good place to start.

One last word: the DVD, released by the producer Erwin C. Dietrich, has been completely restored, cleaned up and digitally mastered and looks perfect in every way. This is how they should treat all movies before transferring them to DVD.

possibly one of Romay's best

Not much of young Oscar left in this but I guess that once Jess caught sight of that Ms Romay's swinging bottom and breasts, he was soon too mesmerised to worry overly about plot details. And one can sympathise, Lina Romay is naked throughout the film and seemingly perfectly happy to not only reveal all but to get down and very dirty in a surprisingly explicit Franco outing. Nudity is hardly unknown in the 'dirty old man's' films but were this not so different in feel to accepted hardcore, that is the label one might find appropriate. Elegantly shot in widescreen this is a colourful, erotic tale with surprising moments hinting at vampirism and despite the appalling dubbed dialogue very watch able and amazingly possibly one of Romay's best.

Art-house and porn collide in this extremely bizarre and mildly poetic film from Spanish director Jess Franco. A young woman (Lina Romay), with vampire like qualities, lives alone in a castle where a new reporter (Monica Swinn) comes to do a story on her. It appears Doriana needs to suck the life out of various men and women, in a sexual way, in order to stay young but she gets none of the sexual feelings out of it. Those go to her sister, also played by Romay, who is locked up in an asylum where she goes through various sexual fits whenever Doriana is with someone. If you've seen VAMPYROS LESBOS or even FEMALE VAMPIRE then you know what to expect with the "sucking life out of someone". Being Franco, this is done with sexual heat and this time out it crosses into hardcore range. I think a lot of hardcore scenes are rather ugly and unerotic but I think that's the point. The rather ugly sex scenes really make you feel the fact that Doriana isn't getting any pleasure out of the situations either. Franco likes to give graphic close ups of the sexual act and his way of filming them is rather ugly and dull but I mean both of them in a good way. I personally prefer FEMALE VAMPIRE but this is still a rather surreal film that mixes both genres. Romay turns in a fairly good performance even though I think she goes way too over the top with the locked up sister. Some of her "masturbation fits" are also a bit over the top with Franco's slowed down camera but outside of that there's not too much to complain about. The hardcore scenes will certainly keep a lot of people away but then again, Franco's name alone keeps a lot of people away. This isn't a pretty film but it's not suppose to be and that's where the films magic really is.

Lina Romay is stunning in a dual role here, in an atmospheric hardcore feature loosely inspired by "The Picture of Dorian Gray". Her principal role is that of "Doriana" Gray, a mysterious young lesbian living in a secluded castle. The kicker is that Doriana has a twin sister who's been institutionalized practically from birth. Despite her many sexual encounters, Doriana isn't able to derive any real satisfaction from them, while the twin sister simultaneously experiences enough sexual ecstasy for the both of them.

Directed by Romay's extremely prolific filmmaker husband, Jess Franco, this is interesting as far as adult films go. It foregoes such things as story in favour of multiple sex scenes, both lesbian and heterosexual. (Doriana has a male servant named Ziros (Raymond Hardy) who gets his fair share of action.) The abundant female and male nudity will definitely keep viewers happy. There's even a hint of something like vampirism due to the fact that people don't always survive these sexual unions. Franco's film does seem to have *some* intellectual aspirations, given that Doriana is interviewed by a journalist (Monica Swinn) who is intrigued by her personality and lifestyle. And "Die Marquise von Sade" is attractively photographed (by Peter Baumgartner and Franco himself) and designed, with an amusing sitar-based music score composed by Walter Baumgartner.

Of course, the main reason to watch is to see Romay, Franco's longtime muse, in a thoroughly uninhibited performance. She's quite enticing.

In my humble opinion this is one of the best Jess Franco films ever. Lina Romay is hot as hell, mostly spending her time masturbating away. The film has an eerie hallucinatory feeling to it, like watching porn in slow motion while on dope. Beware: There are two versions on the market, one is softcore and not that good, one is full hardcore and that's the one I'm refering to. Erwin C.Dietrich told me he was given this film as a gift from Jess Franco in gratitude but never really done anything with it. Finally, due to the DVD revolution it's finally out on silver disc, And it's looking absolutely stunning! Check it out!

Lina Romay burns up the screen in this super racy Jess Franco romp

Lonely, but horny aristocrat Doriana Gray (Lina Romay at her most luscious and desirable) shares a strange and troubling bond with her identical twin sister who's been committed to an asylum: Doriana is sane, but incapable of feeling any sense of carnal fulfillment while her sister is crazy, yet able and open to experience enough sexual pleasure for the both of them.

Legendary Spanish maverick Jess Franco really delivers the extremely satisfying lowdown sleazy goods with plenty of bare female skin and extremely raunchy and explicit girl on girl lesbian action that transcends softcore and goes straight into hardcore territory as the sexually voracious Doriana brings her partners to the absolute apex of carnal passion only to kill them in the process of doing so. Romay tackles her juicy double role with considerable go-for-broke relish and throws herself into her sex, nude, and masturbation scenes with scorching uninhibited abandon. Monica Swinn lends solid support as a snoopy journalist while Peggy Markoff has a small, but memorable part as a yummy blonde victim. Both Peter Baumgartner's vibrant color cinematography and Walter Baumgartner's groovy sitar score are up to par. Very spicy stuff that fans of Mrs. Romay in particular will certainly enjoy.
