Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” hit shelves in 1897, and in that time there have been so many iterations of the famous vampire that to watch them all would take a lifetime. And yet filmmakers continuously try to find new ways in to a story so well-worn it’s leather. Such is the case with André Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which touts itself as Dracula’s origin story (which it really isn’t if you read the beginning and middle of Stoker’s book).
Surrounding just 10 pages of Stoker’s novel, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” follows the crew of the titular boat who, upon arriving in Dracula’s homeland are immediately warned off by an Eastern European harbinger of doom that hints at an old-school horror movie as opposed to a movie that understands we already know Dracula like the back of our hand.

Exclusive: New indie film financier Mizzel Media is launching in Cannes with what we understand to be a healthy six-figure investment in feature The Girl From Köln, the next film from Holy Spider and The Tale outfit One Two Films.
The movie, which is due to shoot later this year, will star Mala Emde (And Tomorrow The Entire World) and John Magaro (Past Lives) in the lead roles.
Bankside is handling world sales in Cannes on the project, which will tell the little-known backstory of how a maverick German teenager named Vera Brandes was instrumental in the creation of the best-selling solo piano record of all time, U.S. pianist Keith Jarrett’s 1975 Köln Concert. Ido Fluk (The Ticket) directs from his own script.
The investment is U.S. outfit Mizzel’s first to date. The New York-based company is run by producer and veteran manager Lillian Lasalle, whose clients...

Amazon’s Prime Video has acquired the Holocaust-centered docuseries “The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes.” It is now exclusively available to stream in the U.S.
The three-part docuseries presented by MGM Television and Sipur in association with Kan11, Toluca Pictures, and Alice communications, brings to light the audio recordings of Nazi SS officer Adolf Eichmann, which detail his role as one of the leading perpetrators of the Holocaust’s “Final Solution.”
It features 28 hours of taped interviews with Eichmann, long believed to be lost, recorded in 1957 while he was in hiding in Argentina, as well as interviews from Holocaust survivors, key witnesses at the Eichmann trial, historians and experts on the Holocaust.

Chatting away to Sally Hawkins, as you do, in the fabled Abbey Road Studios in posh North London neighborhood of St. John’s Wood, she tells me ”I feel fine” when I inquire after her well-being.
Our feet are planted in the very spot where The Beatles recorded the track for “I Feel Fine,” a single that topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic back in 1964. I couldn’t tell whether Hawkins purposefully chose those words to chime with where we were stood.

With its very premise mired in gendered violence, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale will likely never be accused of being lighthearted. Still, Season 4 brought some level of catharsis as central characters found asylum in Canada away from the horrors of Gilead. As many trauma survivors may relate, being physically safe doesn’t mean being psychologically sound, and we’re left to wonder if June will ever truly be able to move on from what she experienced there.
When it comes to dealing with the after effects of trauma, perhaps no character is quite as mired in the process as June’s friend, Emily Malek. Appearing in the original novel only briefly, her state-imposed title of Ofglen is her only known name, making her a Handmaid’s character built more by the series than the book. Even as we meet Emily in Season 1, we see someone who is dedicated to...
