- Thakur Jaswant Singh rules over the region with a iron hand. He has no pity or empathy for the poor, all he is interested in is their money, their women, and alcohol. After the passing away of his dad, he assumes total control over the region, and increases the taxes. One day while walking across the hallway, he trips over the wet floor, and falls down. He gets up angrily and assaults the old woman, Ramvati, who was washing the floor. His abuse is interrupted by the arrival of Ramvati's son, Jeeva, who intervenes. Jaswant is ready to shoot him down, but Jaswant's mom prevents him from doing so. Word gets around that Jeeva is in the bad books of the Thakur, and soon a number of people start consipiring against Jeeva. The next day Jeeva is summoned before the village council and asked to explain his involvement in the death of a cow. Jeeva has no satisfactory explanation, and he is asked to leave the village immediately with his mother. Jeeva refuses to do so, and is severely beaten, and thrown out. Shortly thereafter his mother passes away, and Jeeva decides to avenge her death by bringing about the downfall of Jaswant Singh. In order to do this, he becomes a dacait. Jeeva swears on the holy river Ganga to wipe out Jaswant Singh and his men, without knowing his decision will bring him into conflict with the police, and with the honest people from the very community he was exiled from.—rAjOo (gunwanti@hotmail.com)
- The film begins as Thakur Jaswant Singh (Amjad Khan) rules over the area of the film's setting (A river town in UP). He forces himself on Champa (Farida Jalal), who is the daughter of Keshavram, a secretary (Nana Palshikar). Champa commits suicide and Jaswant throws her body in the Ganga river. Jaswant cares only about money, women, and alcohol. Keshavram is not aware of his daughter's fate and goes to Jaswant's sick dad Raja Sab (Murad) as a last resort. Raja Sab is a kind man and he pulls up Jaswant for his vile habits. But Jaswant talks back to Raja Sab and he ends up having a massive heart attack. After his father's death, he assumes control over the region and increases taxes to 75%. Jaswant's dad was a person with a kind heart and had pardoned taxes when crops failed due to the drought. Jayshree (Bindu) is Jaswant's sister.

His abuse is interrupted by the arrival of Ramvati's son, Jeeva (Amitabh Bachchan). Singh is ready to shoot him, but his mother, Rani Maa (Sulochana Latkar), stops him. Jaswant is angry with his mom and sends her away on pilgrimage.
Village priest Kashinath (Satyendra Kapoor) is against Jeeva since he refused to take care of the temple cow for free and demanded a wage. Mathuradas (Jagdeep) is the town cook. One day Jayshree's carriage wheel gets stuck in mud and she is impressed when Jeeva picks the carriage single-handedly and helps her along her way. Jayshree falls in love with Jeeva, but he is not interested in her.
Meanwhile Jeeva learns that his mother's wedding necklace is mortgaged with the town moneylender Lala (Jeevan). She has paid Rs 1000 against a principal of Rs 500, and yet he refuses to release it. This is why she keeps working lowly jobs, so that one day she can get her wedding necklace back. Jeeva manhandles Lala to get the wedding necklace back, but is stopped by the villagers from killing him.
Dhaniya (Rekha) is a village belle who dates Jeeva. Dhaniya is Kalu Chamar's daughter. Ramvati does not like that Jeeva dates a shoe cobblers daughter, since he is of a lower caste. Now Jaswant has his evil eye on Dhaniya. Rehmat Khan (Anwar Hussain) is a good friend (& rich) and a customer of Kalu Chamar and appreciates the good work that Kalu does in society. Meanwhile Kalu organizes all the workers on Jaswant's farms and calls a strike till Jaswant agrees to more favorable distribution of grain. Jaswant abducts Kalu, but Jeeva manages to free him. Jaswant tries to force himself on Dhaniya, but Jeeva arrives on time and beats up Jaswant, but Dhaniya stops him from killing Jaswant.
Jaswant (Amjad Khan), his priest Kashinath (Satyen Kappu), and Lala (Jeevan) conspire to frame Jeeva for poisoning a cow. The next day, Jeeva is summoned before the village council to explain his involvement in the cow's death. Because Jeeva has no satisfactory explanation, he is beaten brutally by Singh's men. Kalu Chamar (Pran), a shoemaker, tries to help him but fails. Jeeva and the villagers are then asked to leave the village with his mother. As Jeeva refuses to leave the village, he is severely beaten again and thrown out. Shortly after, his mother passes away, and Jeeva attempts to avenge her death.
Jeeva becomes a robber (member of a band of armed robbers). Jeeva swears on the river Ganges to wipe out Singh and his men, not knowing his decision will bring him into conflict with the police and honest people from the community from which he was exiled. Jeeva starts out by looting Jaswant's men who were looting money from Jaswant's uncle Harman. Jeeva returns the money to Harman. Jaswant suspects Kalu of being Jeeva's mole in the village. Kalu is also thrown out. Kalu, the leader of the farmers, vacates the village with his supporters and attempts to start a new colony with the help of his friend Rehmat (Anwar Hussain). Next, Jeeva loots the Lala and returns his confiscated wealth to the villagers. Jeeva also burns all ledgers so Lala cannot recover any debts. Lala also admits that Kashinath killed the cow for which Jeeva was framed. Jeeva goes to kill Kashinath, but Kashinath is bitten by a cobra when he tries to escape, and dies. before dying Kashinath admits in front of the village that he framed Jeeva.
Jeeva then stops Jaswant from transferring crops to any of his customers and causes huge financial losses. Kalu does not support Jeeva in his life of crime. Dhaniya is angry that Jeeva is greedy after wealth, but calms down after she meets all the people whom Jeeva has helped.
Later, when Jaswant loots five lakhs from the villagers (they had received a govt grant to rebuild the village), and Jeeva is initially suspected. Jeeva clears his name by challenging Jaswant to a 1:1 fight. Jeeva defeats and condemns Jaswant after Jayshree returns the money to Jeeva to save her brother's life. Jaswant Abducts Dhaniya and escapes and Jeeva follows. In the end, Jaswant charters a small airplane and crashes it at Laxman Jhula (he was attacking Jeeva with the plane and Jeeva smartly lured him to Laxman Jhula), killing himself.
