A jewel in the history of Telugu cinema
Vicky_baba11 August 2008
Shankarabharanam is story of how music can bring together people from different walks of life.Melocholic, pure, brilliant and yet at times sad,the movie chronicles the life of a brilliant artist from the memories and thoughts of a fellow music lover.

Shankara Shasthry is a renowned carnatic singer of his time.At the height of his prominence, he is invited by communities near and far and felicitated by prominent people. After the advent of pop music however, carnatic music begins to recede in popularity and the great Shankara shasthry becomes an afterthought in the minds of young music lovers swayed by western culture.

Among his devoted listeners is a young woman who is of a geisha-esqe heritage.Even though the reason she is taught music is more for the practical purpose of enticing a potential benefactor, she develops a true love for music and in the process tremendous respect for the great artist. The two are brought together after the women seeks shelter away from people who are trying to exploit her.

The crux of the movie is that the world doesn't understand that the relationship between the teacher and disciple is purely platonic.Given the heritage of the disciple, society simply assumes to name a relationship at its lowest level, when the bond between the characters cannot be catogorized or described that easily.

Ironically society is so shallow and immature as to that it would rather let go of a esteemed member of their community rather than accept a lowly member into their very own.

The disciple soon realizes that her proximity to her teacher clouds the majesty of her teacher and she disappears into the darkness of the night.Years later, she returns with a child,a byproduct of a tragic rape. She intends to give her son the opportunity of tutelage under the great master unlike herself who never had the chance. This forms of the story arc of the movie.

The greatness of the movie lies in its purity of the message that it delivers and the relevance that it holds till date;i.e we are humans first, art unites, and the purpose of the society is to bring people together not divide on the basis of heritage or caste.

A movie told narrated more though music and silence,Shankarabharanam is timeless classic with music that is simply gold.

Art and society
balusmbox22 January 2007
I watched it when i was a kid, and was bored to death. I always loved the music of this film, but i could never understand whats happening. After listening to all the praise from so many friends, I rented it again at the age of 22. I am glad I did, this is movie making at its best.

Its much more than classical music. It is about life ingeneral, relation ship between a Guru and his devoted pupil, a young couple who fell in love, a child who steps in to takes up his mothers place ... and many more stories beautifully woven into one wonderful ragamalika.

I would recommend this movie to all

The best Telugu movie ever
karteekmvs19 December 2003
Well.. Well.. 1000 words would not be sufficient to tell even a hundredth about the movie. No kidding. The first time I watched the movie, I was a kid and obviously did not like the movie as I did not understand it. The second time, I appreciated the movie and then on I have seen the movie n number of times and every time I saw it, I see a new angle which the director wants the viewer to observe and dig deep. The music scored by KV Mahadevan is simply superb. SPB, S Janakia and Vani Jayaram have done a great job and Veturi's lyrics are a class apart. The movie had won 4 National awards which include the best movie providing wholesome entertainment, best music, best male playback and best female playback (Vani Jayaram). The song for which Vani Jayaram has won the award is not even 2 minutes in length and it is the shortest song ever to win an award in any part of the world. The award is SPB's first National award. He tuned his voice so well that it appears as if a 60-year old person was singing (He was not even 35). Another interesting aspect of the movie is that this movie has increased the tape recoreder sales in AP by 10 times. (Tape recorders were new in AP). The dialogues in the movie are excellent and JV Somayajulu (debut) has given an excellent performance.

In short, a novel story, an excellent script, superb direction, stellar performances and above all high-quality songs easily makes Shankaraabharanam the best Telugu movie ever.

Shankarabharanam (Jewel of Lord Shiva and Indian Cinema)
tramakrsna-14 May 2006
This is the best Telugu movie ever made. If Maya Bazar showcases Great Indian Mythology in best form, this movie showcases immortal Indian music by flawless screenplay and direction. Normally Indian movies are considered as sub-standard in all the departments with rare exceptions. But this movie stands 10 out of 10 in all departments. This film had drawn the unparalleled standards to the south Indian films. When movies were being treated as mere commercial entertainers and when Telugu cinema was subjected to utter criticism of being subjugated by baser instincts, this is the only movie shut the world's criticism. Kudos to K. Viswanath, a true gem of Indian Cinema. All of his movies are poetic visuals.

A real Jewel of Lord Shiva
bhanu612 December 2009
Such wonder has never happened in the past and will never happen in future. A Sangamam of great Archaryas in their respective fields,KalaTapasvi K.Vishwanath,KV Mahadevan,SP Balasubraminam,Veturi etc in making a real jewel for shiva. These ragas melt our hearts while the lyrics enlighten our soul with explaining paths to the divine through music.Apart from being exceptional movie on classical music, this movie portrays the culture of Andhrites, the uniqueness of Telugu as a musical/classical language.Every actor/actress fit their role perfectly, and photography has been in tune with the subject and narration.Music itself is a ocean, K.Viswanath brought the great ratnas (ragas)out of the depths and carefully moulded them in an ornament, with the support of a great story, lyrics, and cast.Probably this would have been the best role Somaiyajulu would ever had in his career.. Anyway, every movie of KalaTapasvi is a masterpiece..

Definitely the best movie in the history of WORLD CINEMA
prksandeep1 June 2006
I am ashamed that there are some Indians and Andhras who feel that this movie doesn't deserve 10/10. It deserves lot more than 10. Lord Shiva himself will come down to see this movie. Each expression is a diologue, Each diologue is an emotion, Each emotion is a music, Each music bit is a pancakshari, Each saying of pancakshari is a step to Lord Shiva's abode.

If there is ever a great film director in this world, it should be Sri K Viswanath. If there is ever a great music director in film world, it is Sri K V Mahadevan who gives music full of devotion, away from three modes of nature (satva, tamo, raja gunas). If there are writers who made Lord Shiva send Ganga for them, Srinatha Kavisarvabhouma is first followed by Sri Veturi Sundara Rama Murthy. There is no point arguing this fact.

Not even Titanic, Jurassic park, black, anything else can come near this masterpiece of Indian Cinema. Hollywood is no where near this great movie.

A Treat to Watch
pillu_binko2 June 2007
If one were to name the best movies ever made, " Shankarabharanam" would occupy the numero uno position... K Vishwanath(Director), Jandhayala(Dialogues), K V Mahadevan (Music), Veturi Sundara ram Murthy(Lyrics), S P Balasubramanyam (Singer), have together come up with a excellent masterpiece.... The movie has all the ingredients... The performance of the male protagonist "Shankara Sastry", played by J V Somayajulu, is one of the highlights. Equally important is the role of dancer played by Manju Bhargavi. The fact that Music, may it be Western or Eastern is a result of strong emotions is very well picturized,.... One of the all time bests.

A great movie
marakani14 January 2003
One of the best telugu movies I have seen. It has really great music (unfortunately rather poorly recorded for the 70s), good acting and storyline. It is one of those movies with everything : comedy (Brochevaevaralu), tragedy (the overall story) and drama.

Outstanding Movie (10/10)
devikabsree22 September 2019
This is one of the best movies among the movies I have seen. The theme is excellent, portrayal of characters is highly realistic, plot is flawless and the songs are outstanding. I hope this movie becomes a classic. This movie is perfect for people who are interested in understanding the society (social life led by people) of South India (specifically Andhra Pradesh) during the l1970s and 1980s and transition of musical culture from one generation to another. This movie is a must watch for people who love Carnatic music. Apart from this, I strongly believe that in general, any type of audience will enjoy watching this movie. I don't know Telugu language but still I enjoy(ed) watching it in Telugu. But I was also fortunate to once watch it in Malayalam or Tamil when the dubbed version came on TV.

One of the best movies ever made
sharath-alamuri2 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
There are very few movies that stand the test of time and remain as relevant and as good as they were at the time of their release. This is one such movie. If you only have the time, the opportunity or the inclination to watch only two Indian movies in your entire lifetime, watch this one twice. There are many truly great things about this movie and my ability to adequately express this movie's greatness is constrained by my limited vocabulary.

The story is simple and the simplicity of the storytelling makes it engaging and more effective in underscoring the theme of this masterpiece. The relationship between the protagonists in this story, as some have pointed out, is not just a relationship between a teacher and student. Neither is it one of an admirer and an artist. Nor is it one of a devotee and a deity. It is an ineffable love, a pure platonic affection, an ardor that exists between two people who understand each other at their very essence. As Ayn Rand puts it, it " is reverence, and worship, and glory, and the upward glance. "

The actors are exceptional in their parts. The director is an auteur. It takes special skill to take something so simple and make it a sublime piece of art. He makes even the moments of silence in this movie so poignant. It must be mentioned that the female protagonist ( calling her a heroine is trite and inadequate ) does not speak a single word to the male protagonist but you do not notice it.

The director, during the opening credits, in a voice over, talks about this movie being a humble effort to extol the beauty and majesty of traditional Carnatic music. He was being modest - the music of this movie is exceptionally well written and composed. It celebrates everything that is good and true about Indian Music. The vocals by SP Bala Subramaniam, Vani Jayaram and S Janaki are par excellence.

Good Art - Books, Music, Movies, Sculpture, Painting - whatever the medium usually is nuanced, layered, multifaceted and multi-dimensional. Repeated viewings usually show you something new or something old in a new light. This movie lends itself to repeated viewings not just because of the timeless appeal of its story, but also because you discover something new or rediscover what makes it special every time you watch it.

A great work of art!
gvr-saikiran2 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It would be a sin to call this/ or categorize this "pure work of art" as a movie.I would rather call it a form of pure poetry. The very thought of the movie leaves me amused.Every scene has a profound message embedded in it. Shankarabharanam Shankara Shastry ,not any director can create a character with such deep knowledge and such level of appreciation towards Indian arts and culture.Undoubtebly SHANKARABHARANAM is THE GREATEST movie ever made in Telugu cinema!!!.Now there are hardly any conversations between Manjubhargavi and J.V Somayajulu, but the way Vishwanath handled these scenes really amazes me, you have a prominent background score expressing the emotions of the two characters...hardly any conversations..but you can feel every bit of the emotion.I don't consider myself even worthy of commenting on the music of this SHANKARABHARANAM,it is the very essence of classical music.Finaaly, SHANKARABHARAM IS BOUND TO NO LINGUISTIC BARRIERS,IT HAS THIS AMAZING CAPABILITY TO PENETRATE THROUGH ANY SOUL!

"Chitra Rajamu"
mkrishna-pavan22 May 2010
One of the great-greatest movies ever made in Telugu Cinema and perhaps Indian Cinema. Really really true "Chitra Rajamu".

I am not even born when this movie was released. But I will rate this movie as one of the best movies I ever watched. Each and every frame/scene, Song, dialogue, I simply love. For me, Sri J.V Somayajulu just born to act this character "SankaraSastry'.Other than lead Sankarasastry character,I like sri "Allu ramalingayya". I like his character and specially his voice in this movie especially when he says emotional dialogues.

K.Viswanath, what shall I say about this greatest film maker.Only himself can create masterpiece like this. K.V Mahadevan and Vetur, what a exceptionally great combination. Each and every song is a extraordinary work.

I certainly rate this move as Numero UNO movie that I ever watched.

ZENITH OF ART
kranthireddyg25 May 2021
Absolutely awe struck.

India has produced many great filmmakers but none appreciated and represented art like K. Viswanath did which he exhibits in each and every film of his.

Thus comes the name "KALATHAPASVI" His trademark is he selects an art form in each movie and relates it to real life personalities, complex and orthodox Brahmans or any other caste he portrays.

K. V. Mahadevan musical brilliance is one of the pillar which this movie stands tall even today.

SPB manipulation of his vocals to match the protagonist is absolutely mesmerizing.

Somayajulu popularly known as "SHANKARABHARANAM SHANKAR SASTRY" To this day tells us how he bought to life the character in this movie.

Manju Bhargavi is phenomenal with just her eyes doing all the performance in the movie and her expressions are self explanatory in every sense.

There is no better representation of how classical music coped up with sweeping western music and how it changed the life of people who mastered the art over years and all at once feels downtrodden due to fluctuations in admirers of art.

Yet how they stayed and continued in the same path is the essence of master from student.

This is one of the best movies from india and it's more than just a contribution to world cinema.

Those days people find it their absolute achievement if they watched this movie and there is a sense of devotion towards it.

Best of K. Viswanath and an asset to filmmaking.

The Greatest Cinematic Tribute ever given to Immortal Indian Classical Music. A hard-core emotinal drama with cultural and aesthetic values.
SAMTHEBESTEST27 August 2021
Sankarbharanam (1980) : Brief Review -

The Greatest Cinematic Tribute ever given to Immortal Indian Classical Music. A hard-core emotinal drama with cultural and aesthetic values. A film like this coming in 1980 was one of the best thing happened to Telugu Cinema as well as Indian Cinema. This was the decade when Hollywood was almost done with all their original and first copy adaptions of musicals. But like i said in my Review of 'Swati Kiranam' (1992), Hollywood couldn't just make any realistic and culturally influential film in this genre. Of course, there were good adaptions like 'West Side Story' and 'Oliver Twist' which came with the social content but i don't feel that any of those really managed to cross the barriers of mainstream entertainment. Indian Regional Cinema has done better than Hollywood in Musical genre because we understood the art, the culture and historic and devotional references of it. In Marathi Industry, the stage play Katyaar Kaljat Ghusali explored Indian Classical Music in bestest possible form but when it comes to cinema screen, Telugu Cinema went ahead. Bollywood had musicals in 50s, but such crafting and immortal tribute was missing in films like 'Baiju Bawra' and 'Mirza Ghalib'. Sankarabharam is immensely rich while reflecting the impact of cultural importance of music and inevitable change in new generation. It carry forwards that art treasure to next generation and also gives a poignant lecture on how new generation has spoiled this immortal art form by the attraction towards western culture. The best thing is, it has characters that are very close to the society and makes us think on some issues and traditions we have been following. A widower is boycotted for giving a shelter to a prostitute's daughter who has been raped and is a killer. This idea of creating a bond between two opposite characters has made the film remarkable in social sense. Overall, a classic in every aspect, just don't miss it.

RATING - 8.5/10*

I watched 100's of movies, I watched this in my 30+, but this is the best movie of all time and ever.

After starting the movie within 15 minutes I got goosebumps. And the remaining movie you can imagine how I feel.

I can say it's almost impossible to make a movie like this.

Crystal clear story, acting, screenplay, direction, music, songs, and whatnot everything is great.

A big salute to the movie makers and whoever ever involved in this movie.

The acting of J. V. Somayagulu garu was impeccable.

K.vishwanth's direction was wonderful, I'm not old and matured enough to write about everyone. 👏

Best Of the movies
swetarasipollu11 December 2023
I watched it in my 20's and most of my friends wouldn't like it or understand it. This movie made me realize how we are separated from beauty of our culture, art and music and pushed towards stupid beats that they call music now a days. Every song must have lyrical meaning and pleasant music and this movie is it for me. I understand my mother and her obsession with this movie now. It's a master piece and no director from now a days can mimic it or no singer can sing the songs. No dancer from this generation can gracefully dance like that. It is best representation of classical music and dance form.
