- Durga (Nirupa Roy) and Vikram Kapoor (Amjad Khan) have been married for years. Vikram has taken to crime in a big way and as a result has antagonized a rival gangster, Jaggi (Kader Khan). Durga gives birth to twins and is devastated when Vikram abandons her, refusing to have anything to do with Durga or her sons.
Durga is comforted by Jaggi, who promises to take care of her, but takes Durga and her 2 sons to a brothel. Jaggi tries to sell Durga to a madame but is confronted by a police officer who tries to arrest Jaggi. Jaggi escapes by kidnapping one of Durga's sons. He sells him to a bootlegger, Pascal (Jeevan).
With difficulty, Durga brings up her son, Kishan (Shashi Kapoor), and has given up on finding her other son. Kishan has grown up and is now a dedicated police officer. On the other hand, Pascal has exploited Amit (Amitabh Bachchan), kept him illiterate, and made him a petty criminal and alcoholic. This gets him in confrontation with Kishan (Kishan has confronted Pascal's bootlegging and shut down his businesses) but ironically the two settle their differences and become fast friends. (Basically, as kids one night Kishan was tricked by Jaggi into drinking alcohol which knocked him out. Amit took pity on Kishan and brought him home. Now as Adults, Amit visits the same home and recognizes Durga and introduces himself as the boy who brought Kishan home that night. Durga tells this to Kishan and Kishan & Amit become friends) Basanti (Rekha) is a bar dancer and Amit loves her and wants to marry her.
With the help of Amit, Kishan has arrested 4 men suspected in the killing of a cop. unknown to anyone, the 4 men work for Vikram, who calls Kishan anonymously and asks him to release his men. Gopal (Ranjit) is a drug dealer & Jaggi's son, whose den Kishan raids, but Gopal manages to escape. Kishan rescues Any (Praveen Babi) from the den, who Gopal was trying to drug and sexually assault. Kishan has to take Anu home, where Durga understands the situation and asks Anu to ask her parents to meet her. Anu is Basanti's sister & Basanti is afraid that Durga will refuse the proposal as she is a bar dancer. Anu also doesn't know that Basanti is a bar dancer.
Vikram tries to muscle into Jaggi & Gopal's business by forcibly buying them out, but Jaggi counters by showing evidence of Vikram killing the cop, which Kishan is investigating. Vikram is not aware of his two sons and wife being alive. Without revealing his identity, he hires Amit to kill Kishan during a Navratri dance at Maa Sherawali's temple. Amit informs Kishan and together with other police personnel, keep vigil. Things do not go as planned; they are attacked and Kishan loses his eyesight, leaving the onus on Amit to try to locate the person behind this crime.
Kishan enrolls Amit in the police force to help me track down the perpetrators behind the crime. Amit and Kishan close down all bars owned by Pascal and raid the warehouses owned by Jaggi and Gopal. Jaggi manages to escape, but Gopal is captured. When Pascal approaches, Jaggi refuses to help him. Pascal approaches Vikram, who decides to help him as he wants leverage against Jaggi. Amit raids Vikram's hideout and forces Vikram to run away. While hiding, Vikram runs into Durga, who recognizes him and takes pity on him & decides to protect him. Thats when Vikram realizes that Kishan is his son. Thankfully Kishan is blind and doesn't know that its Vikram. He allows Vikram to stay in his home.
Meanwhile Anu approaches Amit and says that her sister is in Mumbai. Amit instantly recognizes her and takes Anu to the bar. Basanti reveals that she used to send money to Anu from her village for her studies. One year, she was out of money and approached the village financier Gopal, who agreed to lend her money, but wanted to sexually assault her in exchange. Basanti attacked Gopal, which led to one of his eyes being damaged. Basanti escaped and came to Mumbai, where she is given refuge by the madame who runs the bar. She takes the job as she needs to continue sending money to Anu.
Meanwhile Vikram uses Pascal to kidnap Gopal from police custody. Jaggi comes to meet Vikram at Kishan's house. Kishan overhears their conversation to realize that Vikram now holds Gopal and wants Jaggi's helicopter in exchange. Kishan confronts Vikram and to escape Vikram takes Durga hostage.
At the helicopter hanger, Durga recognizes Jaggi as the guy who stole her son. Thats when Pascal arrives with Gopal and reveals that Amit is Durga's stolen son. Amit and Kishan arrive and there is an old, regular fistfight between all possible parties. Jaggi and Gopal are killed. Vikram tries to escape in a helicopter that Jaggi has fitted a time bomb in. Kishan and Amit pursue Vikram and manage to rescue him before the copter blows up. In gratitude, Vikram donates his eyes to Kishan, so he can see again.
