Young And Free is a very interesting film. It is about a Mormon boy Chad who travels with his parents across country. First his mom dies or cholera then his dad dies attacked by wolves. He is then discovered by Indian teenager Rima and two other Indians. When the men attack him he ends up killing them and he is forced to kidnap her because he was afraid she would have let her tribe know where he was. He hides her in the cave he was hiding in, but a bear attacks her village destroying everything and then goes to the cave and tries to kill her, but Chad is able to save her by distracting the bear and using himself as bait.,The next day Rima sees her village is ruined and Chad tells her to find her people (of course she does not understand English) and instead goes back to the cave and is able to draw a cabin on rock so he understands there is shelter and that he needs to go with her before winter comes. You get the impression that while he proved himself to her to be both decent and brave, it is interesting that she would take a chance on a stranger instead of looking for members of her tribe? Maybe she was not treated well, and (or) felt she not going to have a very happy life. Along the way they fall and love ( one night she lies next to him, and the next become intimate ( both times originated by Rima). When they reach the cabin Chad carries Rima inside symbolizing they are married ( although not legally)..Later on she bears him a child, and at the end he has to decide to remain at the cabin or go back to civilization with an incoming wagon train. Spoilers ahead: He chooses to stay and you see the happiness in Rima's face when he does. Like Rima's choice earlier, it was the correct decision. Why? Because although they are not legally married, they are not just content with, but happy with each other and are learning each other's language and ways as they make the change from teenagers to partners in life, and their love grows stronger each and every day. This movie is definitely a romance between two very different people who needed each other to survive in the wilderness and discovered they were made for each other, and they will spend a lifetime happy together. The one weakness is not enough Rima. You do not see her until around 35 minutes of the film, and the Chad and Rima relationship is what makes the movie. Anyway, I liked it. 8/10 stars. Ps.
