European schoolgirls in trouble
lazarillo13 August 2011
I saw this French movie dubbed into German with no subtitles whatsoever, so I probably missed a few plot points (not to mention any meaningful dialogue), but nevertheless, I was not completely un-entertained by it. It's kind of like if Adrian Lyne's contemporary film "Foxes" had been directed by "Emmanuelle"/"Story of O" director Just Jaeckin. It's a little racier than "Foxes", but significantly less racy than most of Jaeckin's erotic fare (not to mention the German "schoolgirl-report" films, which it also somewhat resembles due to the German dubbing).

Three high school friends and the younger sister of one of the trio like to ride around on motor scooters, go to the cinema, and frequent trendy Euro-discos (where they change into their dancing clothes in the co-ed bathroom). What little drama there is occurs when the youngest girl, the sister "Betti" (Isabelle Mejias)is seduced and abandoned by a projectionist and winds up pregnant. The older girls take a rather ironic "revenge" on the lothario projectionist (they all three seduce him at the same time in order to get him fired from his job) and come up with a REALLY ironic way to make money to pay for an abortion (this is a plot you're very unlikely to see today even in Europe). It all leads to a shocking (but mostly offscreen) gang-rape. But as in a lot of Euro-fare, the tone quickly shifts back to breezy and light-hearted.

The sexiest performance here is undoubtedly by French actress Anne Parillaud ("La Femme Nikita"). She kind of resembles Nastassia Kinski in her post-adolescent "Boarding School"/"Stay the Way You Are" period. The older sister (Charlotte Walior) is also quite attractive (although I'm still trying to figure out the strange scene where her father blithely walks into the bathroom while she's changing). For me the most intriguing actress though is Isabelle Mejias who had a quite prolific career in Canada as a teen and young adult actress in 80's films like "Julie, Darling", "The Bay Boy", and "State Park". Judging from this 1980 film she is quite a bit older than I thought she was and perhaps FRENCH Canadian. She's a genuinely talented actress regardless (even clumsily dubbed into German) and one of my personal favorite 80's-era Canadian cuties.

This is pretty standard lightweight Euro-fare. Not heavy-duty as far as "erotica" goes, but I personally have a soft-spot in my heart (or my brain-pan) for this kind of goofy, breezily sexy Euro-swill.

So much promised but so little achieved

What with a title like "Girls", the involvement of director Just Jaeckin and the presence of a youthful Anne Parillaud, this should be a softcore dream. The Jaeckin name is usually enough to get me to view any piece of celluloid given that the "Story of O" is possibly the most erotic softcore film ever made.

Sadly this is no return to those sultry heights. It is a story of a group of teenage French madamoiselles who find boys both interesting and irritating. They play occasional and silly practical jokes and get chased by a few older pervy men. They ride around in an assortment of cars and bikes. They plead innocence to parents. Etc etc ...

Although released on DVD in 2009 under the German "Erotik Classics" label, it is neither. Why it is classified as an "FSK 18" I have no idea at all. It just about rates above PG. There is occasional topless nudity but that it is it. Anne Parillaud looks gorgeous, but we don't get to see enough of her. If that is enough for you, then great. Frankly though, I just wouldn't bother.
