This production is widely considered by critics and fans as one of the worst zombie movies ever made, always appearing included in books, magazines, websites and all kinds of media within the list of the biggest missteps of this subgenre.
Jesús Franco was originally hired to write and direct but after working on the film's plot, he left the project after arguing with the film's distributor Eurociné over the sparse budget. Franco was replaced by Jean Rollin at the very last minute. Rollin later said in interviews he only did the film as a favor for the producer, and that if he had known how bad the script was, he would not have done it. He later deleted it from his filmography even though the film did very well financially.
Jean Rollin felt so embarrassed by this film he wouldn't admit for years he directed it under the name J.A. Lazer.
The medallion which the French girl gives to her German soldier lover is actually a finger rosary, hence the ten small balls around the outside.
As part of the extras, the DVD release includes about six minutes of alternate "clothed" sequences shot for censored television broadcasts. It features actress's who are nude in the film wearing clothes or at least bra and panties.
