Near the beginning of the movie, Shirley knight as maria Mandl has silver hair, pulled back in a big donut-shaped bun. Near the end of the movie, when she comes into the orchestra room in a crazed state because she returned a child to his mother, her hair is yellow blonde, pulled back into a braid not nearly big enough to create the bun seen earlier.
Upon joining the camp orchestra, Fania Fenelon (Vanessa Redgrave) is asked by the women's commandant for her shoe size. Fenelon replies with the American shoe size "9", whereas in reality she would have given the European equivalent size of 40.
At the end of the film Auschwitz is liberated by British troops. It was liberated by troops under Marshal Koniev of the 1st Ukrainian Front, Red Army.
Lagerfuhrerin Maria Mandel is wearing the famous 1930s-era black SS uniform. This is very common mistake in many WW2 films. The Black SS uniforms were discontinued at the start of the war in 1939 and replaced by the Green or Grey uniform. Only Waffen SS tank crews wore black uniforms in combat. This was not, however, the all black uniform worn by the pre-war SS, but rather a short, black waist-cut coat similar in style to that worn by tank crews in the Wehrmacht.
She also is wearing the SS Runes patch on her uniform which was not worn in any Camps. SS guards,doctors,officers and personal wore a patch with the Deaths Head (Totenkopf) symbol.

When the group of women are getting off the train at Auschwitz, Several Camp officers, are wearing Wehrmacht Officers hats which are clearly visible by the Crests they have on them. The SS hats have the Deaths Head (Totenkopf) symbol. No Wehrmacht Officer has ever been to known to work in any labor or death camp. Most of the regular Wehrmacht (Army) claimed to have had no knowledge about the Death Camps.
When the man and woman are hanged, even after the stool they stand on is pushed down and they actually hang, the nooses are very loose around their neck.
Fania Fenelon was sent to Bergen Belson with some of the other Jewish members of the orchestra prior to the liberation of Auschwitz. She was still in Bergen Belson when it was liberated by British troops.
