- Uncle Matthew: A boy your age should be out having fun. Shooting a little pool. Chasing some of those pretty girls.
- Tommy Spencer: That's not what you preach at church.
- Uncle Matthew: I didn't say anything about catching them. I just said chasing them.
- Lem Gatlin: It seems kinda funny to me that the preacher offering up the prayer for our boys going away to fight has his nephew living at home with his mommy.
- Emma: Any word from the jury?
- Uncle Matthew: It will be a long time before anybody in this town hears about the Gatlin boys again.
- Emma: Really?
- Uncle Matthew: Only took the jury 30 minutes to convict all three of them.
- Jimmy Joe Gatlin: Three more days.
- Luke Gatlin: Three more days? Jimmy, we got another week.
- Jimmy Joe Gatlin: Three more days, she's getting married.
- Paul Gatlin: It's not worth thinking about, Jimmy.
- Jimmy Joe Gatlin: Becky is my girl. Come Sunday, she's marrying him. Come on. Let's go.
- Luke Gatlin: Where are we going?
- Jimmy Joe Gatlin: I'm gonna take back what's mine.
- Paul Gatlin: [singing along with two of his friends] I'm gonna find me a feller. A feller who is yeller. Beat him red, white, and blue.
- [the three get splashed with mud by Tommy's truck tire]
- Becky: You're mother would like to see you, I expect. Chewing tobacco and acting like trash.
- Paul Gatlin: [stands up] My brother would like to see you hanging out with ol' Yellow Belly here.
- Tommy Spencer: Come on, Becky. Let's go.
- Paul Gatlin: What's your hurry, Tommy? Have a cut of tobacco.
- Tommy Spencer: No thank you.
- Uncle Matthew: [referring to the Gatlin family] You know, Tommy, you don't have to take this. Not from the old man, the boys, any of them.
- Tommy Spencer: What about the promise I made my pa?
- Uncle Matthew: There's a difference between a barroom brawl, and defending your country. I think your pa would understand.
- Lem Gatlin: [after Matthew has punched him, Lem falls, Matthew helps him up] That ain't bad for a preacher man!
- Uncle Matthew: [smiling maniacally] I'm no preacher, have you heard?
- [punches Lem again]
- Uncle Matthew: [Jimmy Joe rushes Matthew after he hits Lem, Matthew catches him] Aw no, hold it boy. It's not you I want, it's your pa!
- [throws Jimmy Joe aside and resumes fight with Lem]
- Uncle Matthew: I haven't been much of an uncle to you.
- Tommy Spencer: No sir, you haven't.
- [Uncle Matthew looks upset]
- Tommy Spencer: You've been more like a father.
- Uncle Matthew: [Smiles] Thank you.
