It’s become common for movies once trapped on VHS to make that great leap to Blu-ray. And thanks to boutiques like Culture Shock Releasing, hidden gems like The American Scream are available again after being nearly lost to time. Those uninitiated viewers could be hesitant as they try making sense of this 1988 movie’s poster. Is this a slasher? A holiday travelogue? A teen comedy? The simple answer is “yes to all of the above.” The American Scream is indeed a mélange of familiar beats and elements, but everything is put together so strangely that the final product comes across as unique.
Made with a budget of around $200,000 and shot in just ten days in Camp Nelson, California, The American Scream turned out better than expected. Especially since director and co-writer Mitchell Linden threw the script together in a hurry; he was set to go on his honeymoon when...

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

Don't let the title of Howard R. Cohen's Saturday the 14th fool you. Despite being released in theaters after both Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981), Saturday the 14th has absolutely nothing to do with the iconic slasher franchise. Instead, it takes a satirical look at Hammer horror and Universal monsters, while also laying on a very thick layer of sight gags and jokes - that sometimes stick the landing. John Hyatt, the patriarch of the family, makes a sandwich - during a rather random moment in the movie - that consists of what looked like various deli meats, cheese, a tomato, and topped off with a bit of peanut butter. For any of our readers who may be interested in watching this movie after reading this retrospective, that sandwich is a lot like this movie. There are too many ideas, references, and jokes that don't mesh well together,...

Look, those of you who know me likely already know why I have an affinity for New World Pictures (hint: they’re responsible for a movie I think is really “swellraiser”). But I’ve always wondered what kind of film studio had the gumption to produce a movie at the height of the AIDS crisis that was directed by an openly gay man and revels in kink, incorporates copious amounts of blood, and dares us to indulge in our darker nature? It turns out that for a studio like New World Pictures, this tact was pretty much par for the course. New World’s history is all about taking chances, an approach that would ultimately lead to its downfall.
New World was founded by Roger Corman and his brother Gene in 1970. They distributed their first film, the biker flick Angels Die Hard, in June of that year, but their first...

January 15th is a big day for horror fans looking to beef up their home media collections, because there’s a killer assortment of titles making their debuts on Tuesday. Of course, this week’s big release is David Gordon Green’s Halloween (2018), and Arrow Video is showing some much-deserved love for Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak with their limited edition Blu-ray set.
For you cult film fans, Scream Factory is keeping themselves very busy with three different titles: Saturday the 14th, Howling III, and The Plague of the Zombies, and Severin has put together an HD release for Jack the Ripper as well. Also, if you dig on retro VHS artwork, you’ll want to pick up Mill Creek’s special throwback Blu-rays for both Krull and Happy Birthday to Me.
Other releases for January 15th include Goosebumps 2, Cannibals and Carpet Fitters, The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion,...

Tom Hardy plays an amalgam of nineteenth century leads in grimy, intriguing new BBC period drama Taboo…
This review contains spoilers.
1.1 Shovels And Keys
Despite my rule about avoiding any TV show that could share its name with a provincial nightclub or a bottle of perfume won in a church tombola, Taboo proved too irresistible a prospect. It’s produced by Ridley Scott, written by Steven Knight, and stars Tom Hardy. (The last pair’s previous collaboration resulted in 2014’s excellent Locke and recurring Peaky Blinders character Alfie Solomons, the toughest man to wear a baker’s apron since Mr Kipling chinned the Pillsbury Dough Boy.)
Knight developed Taboo from an idea originated by Hardy and his father. To hear them tell it, that idea was to bundle up every male lead in nineteenth century literature into one fearsome package: James Keziah Delaney. Part-Bill Sykes, part-Magwitch, part-Heathcliff,...

Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), the fourth film in the venerable franchise, is considered by hard-core fans of the series to be the best, although it was hardly the “final Chapter” (there were at least 10 more). Directed by Joseph Zito (The Prowler) directed, which is indeed far above average by slasher standards and features a good cast of recognizable 80’s brat pack wannabes, including Crispin Glover (Back To The Future), Corey Feldman (The Goonies), Lawrence Monoson (Last American Virgin) and Judie Aronson (Weird Science). For horror fans who love to celebrate holidays in their own ways, this upcoming weekend couldn’t be any more delightful. We get a Friday the 13th the day before Valentine’s Day on Saturday the 14th. If that doesn’t sound like the perfect excuse for a genre-themed movie marathon, then I don’t know what does.
Okay, so some folks reading this might not have thirty years of horror movie-watching expertise under their belt like I do. Let me give you a rundown or schedule of events for the weekend’s festivities.
Begin Friday night with a mini-marathon of Friday the 13th movies. There are currently twelve to choose from. Most new-school slasher fans will no doubt choose the 2009 remake. If you’re looking to get educated, my personal choices are the original 1980 grassroots version, the grindhouse-influenced Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning, and ridiculous Jason X...

The Dark Place, the eagerly anticipated mystery-thriller from the team behind festival hit Judas Kiss, debuted last weekend to positive reviews.
First seen Friday, June 13th for a special digital premiere audience, the The Dark Place played again Saturday the 14th at the Baltimore Qfest and Sunday the 15th at the Queer Film Festival, Nuremberg. Audiences in multiple cities were excited and entertained by the film.
“It keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire film,” said Andrew Augstyniak, a student at Appalachian State University. “The plot keeps you engaged and you’re trying to figure out the storyline at the same time [the hero] is.”
“I really appreciate the fact that this is a film with gay characters without being gay themed,” commented Roisin Moriarty, of Cork, Ireland. “Their sexuality is a total non-issue which hopefully reflects the way forward both in cinema and real life.”

Friday the 13th is James Wan’s lucky day.
Audiences turned out in droves to check out Insidious: Chapter 2, which opened at an impressive $20 million. Film District’s PG-13-rated thriller opened in 3,049 theaters with significant social media and pre-sale buzz working in its favor. It’s also been a great summer for modestly budgeted horror films, including The Purge and Wan’s own The Conjuring. Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson reprise their roles as the poor parents just trying to protect their unlucky son from the demon spirits they thought they were rid off at the end of the first film.

Everyone knows what infamous slasher-movie icon Jason Voorhees is up to on Friday the 13th – but what does he do on the following Saturday morning? That’s what animator Krystjan Lyngmo’s fun animated short Saturday the 14th is all about. Lyngmo’s nearly 90-second long clip features a killer who looks a lot like the killer at Camp Crystal Lake, but it turns out he’s actually named Mason instead of Jason, and he’s a lot thinner than Herr Voorhees. We suspect this was simply to avoid any potential copyright issues, because a killer wearing a hockey mask who comes home on Saturday the 14th is bound to be thought of as the star of the Friday the 13th films. The clip slashes through horror movie cliches by showing that Mason likes to come...

It’s looking like the ratio of royalty to commoners in Storybrooke is going to be a little out of whack come Season 2, as word comes of two new Disney princesses cast for Once Upon a Time. (In case you didn’t get the Mickey Memo, in the world of Disney animated movies, “princess” is a generic term for the heroine.)
This should be good – one of the new characters is Mulan. Disney adapted the Chinese poem of a young woman who served in the army in place of her elderly father, in their 1998 animated movie of the same name. For the Storybrooke version, EW broke the news that Jamie Chung (Sucker Punch) has been cast. We hope that Ms. Chung’s action-movie resume will be put to good use in the new gig.

Looking at the Comic Con schedule for Saturday the 14th, the only movie scheduled to be previewed for Marvel Studios is Iron Man 3, but we know that they will have more in store for us than just that. There's nothing on the books, but there is some expectation of a few surprises. One thing expected is the reveal of what will be the mystery movie of 2014. For months now we have been left speculating about what the project would be and recent news has suggested that it will be The Guardians of the Galaxy. Whatever it turns out to be, though, we're going to have to wait a few extra weeks for it. Box Office Mojo has gotten word that Disney and Marvel Studios has moved their untitled second 2014 movie from May 16, 2014 to August 1st, 2014. It will be the first title from the studio to be released in August,...

Beginning with The Student Nurses in 1970 and culminating with The Candy Stripe Nurses in ’74, these softcore sex films appealed to a broad audience and helped start an entire subgenre: the young nympho professionals. Thanks to the boxoffice success of The Student Nurses, (the first title ever released by New World Pictures), films surrounding the sexual exploits of stewardesses, teachers and every other female-dominated occupation became ubiquitous throughout the decade.
What set the Corman Nurse titles apart from the rest was the surprising social and political commentary that was often intertwined within the sexual escapades. Indeed, several of the nurse films touched upon such weighty issues as abortion, civil rights, pollution, drug addiction and group therapy. Corman was a shrewd businessman and knew what kind of hot button topics would appeal to the young exploitation audience.
He would essentially give young filmmakers free reign with the script, as long as they delivered certain non-negotiable elements.

I meant to post this yesterday since it was Friday the 13th but I was being pulled in 50 different directions. So here it is on Saturday the 14th. This was a show I did a while back about the history of Friday the 13th Part 7. This episode is one of my older reviews so I apologize for the slow pace. Friday the 13th Part 7 The New Blood (1988) "On Friday the 13th, Jason is back. But this time, someone's waiting " Hands down one of the de…...

If you have any taste in movies at all then you know that James Cameron’s Aliens is a kick-ass action/sci-fi movie that never gets old. You should also know that Michael Biehn, who played Cpl. Hicks in Aliens, has a resume filled with fun and memorable flicks. The Terminator, Timebomb, The Abyss, The Seventh Sign, K2, The Rock, Tombstone, and Planet Terror are just a few of his awesomely entertaining movies. Sure he also starred in Take Me Home Tonight, but a man’s gotta put food on the table. Well if you love the guy as much as you should then you’ll be excited to know he’s hosting a double feature at the Alamo Drafthouse on Saturday the 14th. That’s tomorrow! It’s also in Austin Texas, so if you’re not geographically located nearby you should probably stop reading now. (In fact, go ahead and read this instead.) And...

It's Friday the 13th. It's our own personal holiday that typically comes more than once a year. It's an excuse to spend the entire day watching horror movies. It's also a date that most of us genre fiends prefer to revisit New Line Cinema's classic Friday the 13th franchise. With the hours already ticking down until Saturday the 14th, time is of the essence (unless of course you play the time zone game). It's time to drop everything you're doing and worship the day that has delivered more than a handful of sweet offerings over the past 30 years. First and foremost, after the break we've uploaded the popular YouTube video featuring (nearly) every kill in the Friday the 13th franchise (it hasn't been updated). In addition...

Remember films like Saturday the 14th starring Richard Benjamin or The Willies starring Sean Astin? There is this feeling of nostalgia that comes across in these films. They tap into this child like sense of wonder & awe when it comes to presenting its horror and comedy elements. Sure, as an adult, it might seem a little juvenile. However, if you're like me and still remember your inner kid, then films like this really bring back cherished memories of another time and another place. Enter “Go Green With Dr. Gangrene” which has returned with three new public service short films that feature classic movie monsters roaming the streets of Nashville, Tn, while resident horror host Dr. Gangrene (Larry Underwood) spreads the word on keeping Music City Clean.
“Go Green With Dr. Gangrene” is a continuing collaboration between Nashville Horror Host Dr. Gangrene (portrayed by Larry Underwood) and film maker Cameron McCasland.

1981 - 75 mins. - Rated PG D: Howard R. CohenC: Richard Benjamin, Paula Prentiss, Jeffrey Tambor, Steve Darden, Rosemary DeCamp, Stacy Keach Sr.
After inheriting a mansion from their late uncle, a family comes upon a book that unleashes all kinds of monsters that seek out the book in order to bring a curse full circle on Saturday the 14th.
Misleadingly titled horror spoof doesn't lampoon slashers like the title would leave one to believe. Instead, it's a comedy poking fun of the horror films of yesteryear as it affectionately makes fun of all those creaky haunted house and monster movies of the 40's - 60's. The humor is pretty obvious. The acting is as cheesy as it gets. And the film's low budget origins are all too evident. Still, this little film has something to it that makes it enduring all these years later. It isn't the best film ever...

Beach Vacancy Written, produced, directed, and co-starring Brad Leo Lyon and also starring Jon Alderman (All's Faire In Love / Minor League), Beach Vacancy is a horror / comedy that tells the story of five college kids who veer of course on their way to Tiki Beach. Instead, they find themselves directed to the Sandpiper Motel, a potentially haunted resort right on the water.
Beach Vacancy promises to deliver on the charm of the fondly remembered Saturday the 14th while featuring some side splitting, belly laughs in the vein of such teen sex comedies as Spring Break or Fraternity Vacation. Beach Vacancy even features a dash of Scooby Doo as the film's protagonist stumble upon a mystery and find themselves having to solve it.
This is the second of three projects Director of Photography Skip Erickson has shot for Lyon Productions. Erickson first brought his visual skills to Minor League: A Football Story...

The mission: review at least one movie a week that came out in 1981. The reason: because he can.
The man to do the mission: Thurston McQ.
Prepare yourself for a trip back through three decades in time, to an era when VHS was king, video stores were popping up everywhere and movies could be rented by young, impressionable minds. What were movies like back then? And 30 years on, do the movies that were released in 1981 hold up to our storytelling standards today or fall down hard?
Welcome to a year-long column that will revisit those cinematic classics and not-so-classics from an era where CG and PG-13 didn't mean a thing to anyone yet. Welcome to Retro Review 1981 - The Weekly Column. Thurston, you have the floor. -- Patrick
The nature of progress dictates that we abandon old technologies for new. The benefits are usually obvious, or we wouldn’t do it.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott has revealed details of his next film to Dread Central. Sothcott you may remember is behind the remake of classic 70s horror The Asphyx, and while we have to wait a while longer for work to start on that film, in the meantime Sothcott has announced what sounds to be a sure-fire Friday night beer-n-booze no brainer: Strippers vs. Werewolves!
It sounds like one hell of a showdown… Says Sothcott:
The script has been written by a very talented guy named Pat Higgins, who has made a string of micro budget genre films in the UK including Hellbride, KillerKiller and Bordello Death Tales. His stuff is very stylish and he’s already developed quite a cult following. We’d been chatting about doing something together and he said he was working on a script called Strippers Vs Werewolves. “This I must see”, I thought. I read it...

You may not be familiar with Brit director Pat Higgins but he's certainly paying his horror dues. Higgins is responsible for writing and directing some low budget UK horror titles such as 'Bordello Death Tales', 'The Devil's Music', 'KillerKiller', 'Hellbride' and 'TrashHouse'. And now he's back with the intriguingly titled 'Strippers vs. Werewolves'. Check out more about the flick below and what producer Jonathon Sothcott has to say as well as news on the first casting for the movie - ex-soap star and out-and-out hottie Adele Silva (below). Silva as a stripper? Yes please! 'His stuff is very stylish' Sothcott says of Higgins, 'and he's already developed quite a cult following. Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.
A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).
How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

Halloween is over, but the horror-film screenings continue. A quartet of genre features that have yet to achieve general distribution will be shown this month on opposite coasts, all with special guests on hand.
Tonight at midnight (actually 11:55 p.m.) at Los Angeles’ New Beverly Cinema (7165 Beverly Boulevard), the Grindhouse Film Festival presents a special showing of Lee Damarbre’s Smash Cut, about a horror filmmaker (played by the original Last House On The Left’s David Hess) who uses real body parts in his screen shockers. Inspired by the films of Herschell Gordon Lewis (who has an onscreen role, along with his The Wizard Of Gore star Ray Sager), the movie also features adult-film star Sasha Grey, Jesse Buck and Fango fave Michael Berryman. Demarbre and Hess will introduce the Grindhouse showing—Smash Cut’s only big-screen engagement in La—and take part in a Q&A afterward.
