Not a masterpiece but very watchable
destracricetale28 September 2006
This movie is a mix up between "Lo Chiamavano Bulldozer" and "Rocky" with an a little aged Bud Spencer with some sidekicks and the same bad guy of "Lo chiamavano.." and "Uno sceriffo extraterrestre". Switch an former football player character from "lo c "Bulldozer" with a former boxer one and a groups of street boys with a single young man and voilà, here is "Bomber". The plot is less than original ("lo chiamavano Bulldozer plus something for Rocky"), you know and the jokes are not so funny as the prior BS movies. The sidekick Jerry Calà is an useless add to the cast; he played the role of an buffonesque boxer manager , noisy but not really funny despite his grimaces . Jerry Cala was an actually famous comedian and because of this the producers put him in the movie.

In comparison of those two classic, "Bomber" lost several points but the whole movie is still amusing.

¨Bomber¨ is an ordinary Bud Spencer vehicle with lots of fights , combats and brawls
ma-cortes29 October 2011
Bud Spencer as Italian seaman and previous heavyweight boxer turned into coach and manager against experimented American boxers . This time Bud Spencer as Bud Graziano , a hustler and ex-boxer who left the boxing and helps Jerry (Cala) to look for a boxer against American contender from a HQ ¨Headquarter Camp US Army¨ whose commandant assigns the sergeant to form the boxer team to compete Italians . They meet Giorgio (Stefano) a twenty-years-old young who attempt to train against the corpulent Sam Newman (Bobby Rhodes) . Then the former boxer ¨Bomber¨ takes in charge of the training . It all climaxes a boxing championship between American soldier and Latino boxer . When Spencer goes into the action he turns the score , hitting like a Bomber and again fighting his enemy Rosco Dunn (Kallie).

This fun , entertaining , engaging movie is crammed of fist-fights, overwhelming stunt-work and lots of humor . Bud Spencer is top notch as one army man confronting a group of American soldiers and as always he makes his own stunts with comic touches , as usual . The picture results to be a crossover between ¨Bulldozer¨ also written by Marcello Fondato , including American soldiers fighting Italians, and ¨Stallone's Rocky¨ argument . The lighting-paced storyline slows down at times , but frantic fight's sequences make up for it . It's an amusing romp with brawls , including amusing bounds and leaps at a bar . This is a nice entertaining juvenile for Bud Spencer fans , as he's delight . It packs action, fist-play, slapdash, humor with tongue-in-cheek and is quite bemusing . This release has some cool and several hilarious moments ; however the Terence Hill-Bud Spencer duo films are much better . The film isn't always good , sometimes is fresh and diverting and on a couple of memorable occasions ,it's frankly delicious. The movie displays innumerable laughters , jokes and slapstick . The highlights of the movie are some likable dancing with Spencer executing punches and of course the boxing combats . In the picture appears usual secondaries from B Italian series seen in several genres as Spaghetti Western , Peplum as Rik Battaglia , Nello Pazzafini , Giovanni Cianfriglia , Pietro Torrisi and Octaviano Dell'Acqua as habitual thugs , all of them in brief appearances ; furthermore an Alvaro Vitali lookalike. Catching and commercial musical score by Guido and Mauricio De Angelis -Spaghetti Western's ordinaries- and composed by synthesizer, as usual ; it contains some tunes in Rocky similar style . Good cinematography by Giorgio Di Battista , being well remastered .

The picture is well starred by Bud Spencer . Bud , the popular Latin movie actor who starred in innumerable spaghetti Westerns and action-packed potboilers during the 1960s and '70s, was born Carlo Pedersoli (1929) in Naples. He was the first Italian to swim the 100 meter freestyle and competed as a swimmer at the Olympic games . He appeared as a member of the Praetorian Guard in his first movie, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's epic "Quo Vadis" in 1951. He changed his screen name to "Bud Spencer" in 1967, as a homage to Spencer Tracy and to the American beer Budweiser. Spencer obtained his greatest hit in spaghetti Westerns lensed for a global audience. Teaming up with fellow Italian Terence Hill or Mario Girotti , the two achieved such international successes as I Quattro dell'Ave Maria (1968) , "They Call Me Trinity" , and its sequel ¨Trinity is still my name¨ , both of them their greatest hits. Their dual outings made both stars famous, particularly in Europe and shortly in USA . In all, Spencer made 18 movies with Hill . Later on , he became a jet airplane and helicopter pilot after appearing in ¨Crazy plane¨ (1972) and owned an air transport company, Mistral Air, which he founded in 1984. However, he finished his business interest in Mistral and entered the children's clothing industry. After 1983, Spencer's movie career slowed down, though he did have a big success in the early 1990s with the TV action-packed series "Extralarge". A man of many talents, Bud wrote texts and plots for some of his films . He also has registered several royalties. In the 70s and 80s Bud Spencer starred various movies without Terence Hill , as he made three kind of films : 1ª he performed pictures with a little boy as partner as ¨Banana Joe ¨ , ¨Aladino¨and ¨The Supersheriff¨ ; 2ª about cop named Flatfoot or Rizzo, also called Piedone, such as, ¨Flatfoot , Flatfoot in Hong Kong, Flatfoot in Egypt , Flatfoot in Africa¨, furthermore the ¨Extralargo¨ series ; 3ª about diverse characters as a medieval knight as ¨Soldier of fortune¨ , a swindler as ¨Mr Charleston¨ or a fisherman , ex-player as ¨Bulldozer¨ , or ex-boxer as ¨Bomber¨. The story is middling written by by Marcello Fondato, following the Hill-Spencer ordinary trademarks , he wrote several Spencer vehicles as ¨Bulldozer¨, ¨Aladino¨, ¨The Supersheriff¨, and ¨The sheriff and the extraterrestrial little boy¨ and directed him in ¨Mister Charleston¨.

The film is professionally directed by Michele Lupo who also directed ¨Bulldozer¨ , ¨Supersheriff¨ , ¨Occhio alla Penna¨ and ¨Supersheriff and the little extraterrestrial¨ with similar protagonist and technicians . If you love the Spencer's other movies, go for it, and if you've never seen one this is an acceptable start ; but only for Bud fans .This is an average entertaining juvenile that will appeal to Italian comedy buffs

Bud the Boxer
Horst_In_Translation1 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Bomber" is an Italian movie from 1982 that is also almost exclusively in the Italian language and this one runs for 100 minutes approximately although there are also several versions out there I believe. Some shorter ones too I think. As you can see from the poster, this is another Bud Spencer film and this one will have its 40th anniversary next year. I can say that now because 2021 has officially started. Happy new year, readers! We also get another great Oliver Onions tune here, surprisingly also a slow instrumental version of the originally positive catchy song for the more serious moments. Okay, this film here does not star Terence Hill or another lead who is equal with Spencer, so we have several character kinda step in and share the screen with the beloved big bearded brute. Sorry, I just had to. I will not elaborate in detail about the names of the actors with one exception. First there is of course the one who tries to convince Spencer to join him and help his boxers. That one reminded me a bit of Benigni. I am sure he could have played that part too. And honestly, he would not even have been too young I think. Or only slightly. This film is from two years before I was born. The second is of course the young troubled boxing prospect, felt a bit like an Italian James Dean. Okay, in terms of the approach I should probably say. Or the character he played. I doubt the actor had Dean's talent and screen presence. And then there is of course the main antagonist and that one was once again played by actor Raimund Harmstorf from Hamburg. Kinda fitting with the huge success Spencer's movies had in Germany that you also find German actors on several occasions. Ha! Did I fool you too? Actually, that is not Harmsdorf, but I really though while watching that it was him. The actor is Kallie Knoetze and he was a pretty successful boxer during his prime. Not unusual at all that he gets cast as the main antagonist here because Spencer fought Joe Bugner (a really big star in the world of boxing back then) in several movies, so seeing another boxer being cast here does not feel a big surprise. So no Harmstorf this time, sorry. But on enough other occasions. As for female characters, there is almost nothing here. Spencer flirting a little bit with one early on when he meets his new buddy and later on a bit of romance involving the young boxer and that is it. Female character almost never play key roles in Bud Spencer movies, but they are just there for somewhat romantic relationships to the males at the center of the story and even these relationships are not really key whatsoever. This one here is a perfect example as there are several men infatuated by women, even in the absence of heartthrob Terence Hill. And I also have not yet talked about the people who made this. Well, for director Michele Lupo, this was his final movie, even if he lived for a few more years afterwards before his nonetheless untimely death. Writers Fondato and the much younger Scardamaglia (also died too early) have collaborated on other Spencer films too and even worked with Lupo on those, for example on the one with the little alien boy. But let's not drift too far away from this one we have here. Of course, as boxing is at the center of the story, it makes sense that there is a lot of fighting and brawling in here, even more than you usually see in Spencer films and also a great deal of ring action, especially in the second half. I mean sports are something featured frequently in Spencer's films, but rarely to an extent it is here. The man was of course an Olympic swimmer himself. Check out his biography if you want to know more. Such a multi-talented man.

Okay, in the end of course Spencer also gets his own chance at glory when he realizes that his enemy had been using unfair tricks and the two are up against each other in the ring one last time and of course our hero wins and is also really delighted and enthusiastic afterwards. You don't see the gruffy big bear this often showing so many positive emotions because he almost always plays characters that do not show a great deal of their emotion. But he is always a good guy. He also early on defends the one I compared to Benigni earlier during that scene at the construction site early on and also immediately afterwards inside the gym. So yeah, the key story is alright here, probably more of a feast for people who like boxing more than I do, but what is always also nice in Spencer's movies are these small fun moments in-between. They may not be as frequent here as in other Spencer films as it almost feels like a serious sports drama here and there, but they are there and I enjoyed them. You just have to watch carefully and you will see them. There was one moment especially that made me laugh, but I don't remember exactly which one. Maybe on rewatch. The earthquake reference early on was funny though. Also you don't really see Spencer dance this often in his movies. Here he does it. Admittedly, the scene when the title character really destroys everything I was not too big on, but I guess it kinda makes sense because he wanted to see the young man again and knew they would send him. By the way, speaking of the title, there has rarely been a better nickname for a character played by Spencer than Bomber. Maybe not even a better nickname for anybody in film history because it fits his size and strength oh so well. No surprise he is the deciding factor in this tug-of-war battle sequence. I think that was really way more popular back then compared to today. I still remember we did this at school as well, but is anybody doing this nowadays anymore? Anyway, boxing films were of course a big thing back then, so no surprise this is a key factor here too. Rocky happened five years before that already I think. Or even more. Okay, I think this is it then. I like this film and I give it a positive recommendation, but it is not on a level where I would say that maybe on rewatch I will add another two stars. Highly unlikely. But I have said so for several other Spencer movies that I also gave 6 out of 10. Still, no hesitation here for me in giving this one another thumbs-up and a positive recommendation. I think that it was maybe not the best decision to focus this much on other characters. Some scenes are even completely without Spencer and I think maybe ten minutes less and losing these scenes would have been a better choice. The benigni fella for example had too much screen time for my taste because if we are honest, he wasn't that funny really and a bit overexposed. Also I felt the movie took itself too seriously at times. So there are flaws here. Nonetheless, Spencer was a delight as always and carried the film pretty much on his own on his broad shoulders and made it easy to ignore most of the mediocrity. Go see this film. Fun enough that I have no hesitation at all in saying this needs to be checked out. The rating here on imdb seems really accurate overall at 6.4 right now. Oh and the title guy's last name is Graziano? Typical boxer name haha. And what was up with that bavarian music on one occasion haha. More references for the German fans. Okay I will really stop now. What are you waiting for anyway still reading this? Go see the film instead. Bud really is the god of pep talk in here!

remake of BULLDOZER. silly but very watchable
r-c-s5 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Bud Spencer's 80s solo movies tend to be rather childish. Plots are rather sketched and primitive; action is clicheed and repeated; acting follows foreseeable patterns...YET i have watched BULLDOZER, BOMBER & others countless times. The movie's end comes, and -in spite of its flaws, low budget, whatever- one realizes -perhaps to one's own surprise- that he could easily watch it over again. BOMBER is basically a remake of BULLDOZER, with boxe standing in for American football: lone seaman has a thorny past of accomplished sportsman; local wild bunch of amateur, goofy sportsmen get in trouble with US military base sergeant thug & his cronies. Lone seaman joins them -albeit reluctantly- to avenge past injustices. De Angelis brothers recycle their silly ( yet catchy ) jingles ad nauseam ( FANTASY is a rip-off of their cartoon soundtrack GALAXY EXPRESS 1999 etc ), same as (in BULLDOZER ) they ripped off their own SPACE 1999 ( Italian edition ) soundtrack ( music remains the same, words vary ). The plot recycles a few characters from BULLDOZER ( the tall skinny ugly Naples guy etc ) and add others (EG Jerry Calà, Gegia etc ). Calà and Gegia were the hit of the moment: the first a raising comedy actor, the second co-starred back then a popular Lavazza coffee TV ad featuring deceased actor Nino Manfredi: that is why they were added. The Giorgione character ( ever noticed the "training montage" music spoofing Rocky's music?! ) hogs too much screen time, opposed to what had happened with the same subplot (= mislead yet well meaning guy getting a "lesson in life" from Spencer ). The additional cast makes an overall (slightly ) better impression than in BULLDOZER, with Calà making a difference; BULLDOZER's supporting actors were mainly stand-ins and stuntmen ( watch carefully and you'll spot them being on the receiving end of an hammer-punch in many other Spencer&Hill movies ). The American villain looks like a twin of the Bulldozer's US foe.

Bud Spencer at his best!
TheBadMan8711 July 2010
A very good movie for the whole family. It's a well made cocktail of action, comedy and good feelings, with a very funny Calà and a surprisingly fit Spencer. This thing has to be viewed till the DVD burns out, It never tires the spectator, the gags are always funny and original in some way.

Unfortunately good movies like this today are nonexistent, the Italian cinema has lately fallen so low, you only see around teenage dramas and various other crap movies with high sexual content. And to think that we Italians have made the history of cinema (words o Quentin Tarantino). I quote only Sergio Leone and his absolute masterpieces and then remain silent...forever.
