Raj Babbar was signed by Prakash Mehra during his struggle in Mumbai. He lived at Prakash Mehra's house during his struggling days.Mehra signed Raj Babbar for Namak Halaal. The distributors offered Prakash a better price if he replaced Raj Babbar with Shatrughan Sinha. Prakash Mehra agreed but Amitabh Bachchan no longer wanted to work with Shatrughan. That is when Prakash Mehra sought out Vinod Khanna and Shashi Kapoor. Vinod was leaving for the USA so Shashi Kapoor was signed. Raj Babbar was eventually dropped from the film. Raj Babbar always held Amitabh responsible for his exit from the film. Babbar felt it was Amitabh who was behind his exit from the film. Years later their rivalry would go further when they clashed over Rekha.

Amitabh was facing a heroine crisis in the early 80's. He had stopped signing films with Rekha. Raakhee was transitioning to more mature roles. Parveen was in and out due to her illness. Neetu was retiring. He would not act with Moushumi - either due to ego hassles or personality clashes. Same with Shabana. Or he did not consider them A-Grade. After working with Smita in Shakti Amitabh requested Prakash Mehra to sign her for Namak Halal as well. That was also his way of making up for getting her replaced by Jaya Bhaduri in Silsila.

Bappi Lahiri said Prakash Mehra came to his house with the lyrics 'Pag Gungaroo' and wanted Bappi to make a Fusion sound. At that moment Bappi's mother came and Prakash ji asked her to sing these lines in her voice {as she is a fantastic classical singer}, Bappi'da's mother sang 'Pag Gungaroo Band Meera naachi thi' in classical style and as she finished that line, bappi da introduced the disco beat which comes in the song after these words. As Bappi da finished his piece of music, Prakash Mehra got up and said this is my song !.
