No Romeo for Juliette.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the rare works of the not-so-glorious French eighties which takes place in the working classes milieu.

Juliette remembers...she was born under a bad sign ;at 17,when other girls were flirting and studying in high school ,she used to help her father in his forge ,before going to work in the factory. Her mother was a mentally disturbed person. In the dance hall, she met Pierre ,one of her brother's friends. They fell in love ,but her parents had to sell their forge ,and were out on the streets. So she had to renege on her love and to marry a railroad man (Richard Bohringer) .It was a brutal man ,fond of the bottle who would hang around with his buddies in the cafés.

Juliette's story could be a news item ,Aline Isserman makes it sound like a rebellion against male society where even the law is against a woman who loves her daughter, the only light in a desperate world. That a wife can only hope her husband 's death to begin to live is not a common subject in the lower social classes ."Le Destin De Juliette" was an anomaly in the eighties when success stories were the golden rule and was quickly unfairly forgotten.

Like this ? try this.....

"Darling" Christiane Carrière ;another tragic fate ,another female director. To depict a woman's plight, women know best.
