Cautionary Tale Over Wrong Choices Leads to Consequences
shelbythuylinh15 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This tale over in John Louis Evans III as a career criminal and in the running with partner in crime, Wayne Ritter for robberies, rapes, stealing, and later murder of the pawn shop owner in front of his two daughters there.

Got them the electric chair, Evans in 1983, Ritter in 1987 there in Alabama. And that though Evans mature but too little too late there. He tapes before his execution a warning to young people not to follow his ways into crime.

He grew up in a Christian loving huge family home as his father played by the late character actor, Ed Lauter is so heartbroken and when he dies, it seems he died of a broken heart over John.

John tried to get away from crime with being engaged but the demons came back to haunt him and ended his life. Both he and Ritter deserve it but give him a bit credit for trying to warn young kids.

Still as one of the two daughters of the slain pawn shop owner, that is so tragic as heartbroken to see their own dad murdered in front of them.

Man Trying to Save Young People!
ShelbyTMItchell24 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Just saw this on Youtube as it shows John Louis Evans III four days in 1983 before his last ride to the electric chair in Alabama AKA Yellow Mama. For killing a father who owned a pawn shop with two young girls, that very scared, looked on while their father was tragically killed.

Talked to a prison chaplain and videotaped a message to young people. Not to make the mistakes he made.

Evans came from a loving family of seven brothers and sisters. And really had a good Christian home. Only to throw it all away. To live a life of crime. Just when he was about to go straight and get married, and have a family.

He and his prison buddy from Indiana, and on parole make a huge mistake while robbing. As it cost them their lives as Evans was executed in 1983 and his buddy, Wayne Ritter was executed in 1987. In all they committed robberies, kidnappings, extortion, and murder.

Alabama Government really did not like the fact that Evans made the tape to make him a hero. And make him be sympathetic. But really Evans seemed to want to make sure that young people never made the mistakes that he made. Before he died. Either way you look at it, hopefully young people got the message or will.

One man's repeated run-ins with the law inspire him to tell others not to make the same mistakes.
witchy_mac19 April 2000
I got to watch this TV movie in my ninth grade Health class, and I just watched it, amazed. John Evans, after having gotten over his adolescent criminal urges, and ready to get married and settle down with a family, once again decided to repeatedly break the law in various ways.

Evans is the anti-hero of the tale, with film clips of the real John Evans adding insight at the beginning, offering a prologue for this heart-wrenching story.

I recommend this movie for anyone old enough to understand the consequences of breaking the law, and how it affects them as an actual human being.

Would like to purchase copy of this movie....
mwhitcalifornia20 May 2007
Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy of this movie? I have checked with CBS and they said they have already deleted it from film and re-used it. I have been searching for a copy for years now and have not been able to find it anywhere. If anyone knows where I can get it, please advise.

I work with juvenile delinquents and find this movie totally and completely compelling and would like to use it in my counseling work. I feel that it is full of valuable instruction in the "first person" sort of way and feel that children everywhere should have the opportunity to see it and learn from it, in whatever way they can, to not make the same mistakes as Mr. Evans and Mr. Ritter had done.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Comment From Eddie Nassar's Daughter (who was there) Warning: Spoilers
I am the oldest daughter of the Pawn Shop Owner that was murdered by Evans. I was nine years old and my sister was seven when my dad was robbed and murdered at his Pawn Shop. There were two men; Evans who actually pulled the trigger and Ritter who said he would have pulled the trigger if Evans didn't. My sister and I were both there when this happened. I too saw the afternoon program. I only saw it once and the few things that I remember about the show were: #1-the little girl that portrayed me really did look like me. I was impressed. #2- they made it appear like my dad was armed and was going for his gun when Evans shot him. This made it look like Evans shot him in self defense which is totally incorrect. It was cold-blooded murder. The two men begged for the electric chair and showed no remorse during their sentencing. This all is stated in the court transcripts. If anyone has this episode or knows where I can find one I would love to have a copy. Ashley Nassar.

kids need to see this

I saw this Afterschool Special almost twenty years ago and still remember it vividly. John Evans was one of the first people executed in the United States after the Supreme Court restated the Death penalty in 1976. He was put to death in Alabama's electric chair in 1983 after being denied clemency by then Governor George Wallace. Evans was a career criminal who killed a father of two little girls during a robbery. What amazed me is that he admitted he came from a good, loving family and threw it all away. I felt so angry at his horrible crime and felt he deserved to die for it. However, I applaud him for making this cautionary tale. I remember I felt so bad for his poor mother because she lived to see him executed. By the way, a lot of liberals were upset because the chair malfunctioned and Evans sort of got crispy crittered a little bit, oh well TS.
