The creature feature, at its most basic, is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course. A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters to genetically altered animals run amok.
This week’s streaming picks highlight creature features from the glorious age of practical effects: the ’80s. These five horror titles run the gamut in tone, style, and creature, showcasing just how nebulous and varied the creature feature can be. Whether you’re in the mood for quirky parasites with personality or lust that turns monstrous, these ’80s creature features go big on practical effects. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

One of the most foundational pillars of horror also happens to be one of its more nebulously defined subgenres: the creature feature. At its most ubiquitous of definitions, the creature feature is simply a horror movie in which a monster plays a prominent role as the primary antagonist; the term says it all. It’s the creature part that’s loose for interpretation, of course.
A creature feature could be anything from carnivorous aliens from space to manmade monsters that turn on their makers, and everything in between. Often, a creature feature highlights nature running amok. This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to the horror movies that bring the monster mayhem in various ways, but all showcase excellent practical effects.
More specifically, this week belongs to underseen creature features that deserve more attention. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

All You Can Eat opens with a shot of the sign for Planet Burrito, a Taco Bell type Mexican restaurant whose mascot is a three-eyed alien with a taste for human limbs that looks as if it was designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. It’s a fitting image as writer/director Kieran Reed delivers a thirteen-minute trip down horror’s memory lane with an emphasis on the films of the 80s.

Although we were inundated with hockey masks, knives, and axes in the early ‘80s, there were some horror filmmakers looking to do something against the grain; people like Sam Raimi conjuring undead demons in The Evil Dead (1981), or in the case of Douglas McKeown’s The Deadly Spawn (1983), giddily updating Monsters from Space to include voracious face ripping and gallons of the red stuff.
Upon release in April, Vincent Canby of the New York Times called The Deadly Spawn an “amateurish, resolutely unscary, low-budget horror film”, and while points one and three are objective statements, the middle depends on the viewer; if one has a fear of flesh-eating, three-headed, multi-fanged space visitors, this will do the trick.
Amateurish and low-budget go hand in hand; made for a little under $20,000 and filmed on weekends over the course of a year, The Deadly Spawn falters in some regards where others of its ilk normally do.

Initially released in 1983, Douglas McKeown's The Deadly Spawn has never had an officially licensed toy... until now. Justin Ishmael has teamed up with producer Ted Bohus to enlist the talents of artist James Groman (Madballs) to sculpt a screen accurate recreation of the toothy creature from The Deadly Spawn, and a Kickstarter campaign is now underway to fund the figure, which is accompanied by a seven-inch Larvae toy:

Update: Sadly we won't be able to make Friday's screenings, but Jonathan will be attending Saturday night. If you're a Daily Dead reader and want to meet up, send us an email! Original Story: In 2017 the horror genre lost a legend with the passing of Tobe Hooper, and this year's April Ghouls Drive-In Monster-Rama will pay tribute to the influential and innovative filmmaker on the first night of their two-day silver screen celebration.
A companion marathon to September's Drive-In Super Monster-Rama (one of Daily Dead's favorite events of the year), this year's April Ghouls Drive-In Monster-Rama takes place April 27th–28th at the Riverside Drive-In Theatre in Vandergrift, Pa.

Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.

Mondo does more than just posters. In addition to making cool art and shirts, Mondo Tees also makes and sells vinyl LP soundtracks for cult classic movies with a great soundtrack. In the past they've made vinyl pressings for The Deadly Spawn, Poltergeist, this year's Maniac remake and most of Studio Ghibli's films. Up next is John Carpenter's Halloween, an already iconic soundtrack that gets the ultimate release with a package that includes two LPs with stunning art by Phantom City Creative. The soundtrack includes all 28 tracks from the original 1978 John Carpenter horror classic. If you're a big Carpenter fan, this is a must buy. Here are a few photos of the new Halloween soundtrack cover/case and the actual vinyl, as debuted by GQ: If you need background music, here's the infamous "Halloween" theme that has become part of pop culture: This new vinyl release of John Carpenter's Halloween...

Earlier today we alerted you to the special Halloween screenings at the American Cinematheque. They aren't the only Halloween game in Los Angeles. Cinefamily has announced their 30 midnights program for Halloween. Last year the focus was on video nasties; this year it is the United States of Horror, a "cross-country death trip, with each night celebrating a different state of the Union, and regional horror filmmaking of all stripes. Whether it's unknown directors toiling away on backyard labors of love, or itinerant auteurs falling in love with and shooting an unfamiliar landscape as if it was their own, this series' thirty entries provide a vibrant overview of our nation's hidden horror history." Sounds way safer than taking an actual roadtrip.

Though the Alamo Drafthouse already declared 1982 “the greatest summer of movies ever” with their Summer of 1982 screening series last year (which we giddily participated in ourselves), the team behind the very successful screening series has now conceded that, hey, 1983 was pretty sweet, too. In celebration of another great year at the movies, the Drafthousers are now rolling out their brand new Summer of 1983 screening series, one that features the “crown jewel of that summer,” no less than Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi on the big screen. While all the titles featured as part of the Summer of 1983 will show in all Alamo Drafthouse markets (Austin, Houston, and San Antonio, TX; Denver, Co; Kansas City, Mo; and Ashburn and Winchester, Va), Return of the Jedi will only play in Austin at the Drafthouse Slaughter Lane on May 25. To celebrate, the theater promises no less than “an all-day, galactic-sized...

More news from the mega-talented folks at Mondo, this time from their music department: the art collective has revealed the artwork and release details for their upcoming limited-edition vinyl release of Jerry Goldsmith's iconic score to Poltergeist. To a horror soundtrack collector (like yours truly), this thing is about three hundred flavors of awesome – much like Mondo's previous vinyl releases of Maniac, The Beyond and The Deadly Spawn (plus they've got a pressing of Drive in the works). So we'll break it all down for you right here. The expressionistic gatefold over design by Australian artists Sonny Day and Biddy Maroney (who work under the handle We Buy Your Kids) is worth the $25 price alone, and houses a two-lp set with all of the score cues remastered specifically for vinyl. Here's the complete track listing, which includes five never-before-released cues: The Star Spangled Banner The Calling / The Neighborhood (Main...

Mondo has been ramping up their album division. Last year they released vinyl reissues of The Beyond and Maniac soundtracks. For their first release of 2013, Mondo is reissuing the soundtrack to The Deadly Spawn. Phantom City Creative handled the artwork, and random packages will have The Deadly Spawn variant vinyl - red splotchy color that mimics the monster's coloring.
Much like Mondo's limited-edition poster sales, The Deadly Spawn will go on sale at a random time on January 4th. For more info, check out Mondo's blog.

Over the holiday break, I became the owner of a record player again. (Fun fact: I haven't owned one since, well, middle school.) This is great because now it has opened me up to a whole new world in terms of re-issues of incredible soundtracks, furthermore, I can finally enjoy the Maniac and Insidious scores I've owned on vinyl.
If you're a fellow record lover, you'll be wanting to keep an eye on Mondo this Friday, that's when they release The Deadly Spawn soundtrack.

Welcome to another installment of It Came From 1980X where I tackle the 80′s like a running clothes line fresh off the turnbuckle. Tonight we have a double feature for you straight from Continental Video. Don’t know Contintental Video? I’m not surprised, but I assure you by the end of this whole thing you most certainly will know them, fear them and maybe enjoy them a bit better. They’ve put out so much of what you love, but I don’t think they were marketed nearly as well as Midnight, Wizard, Canon or Media. For Christ’s sake somebody get me a T-shirt of this beautiful company. The double feature in question comes courtesy of Vhsps as is often the case. The Slayer and Scalps were released as a part of a special promotion as is stated on the cover of the VHS (or in this case handsome DVD rip).

From the moment it was announced that Ridley Scott would be filming Prometheus, a film vaguely described as being set in the Alien universe, the overriding question was how much of Alien’s DNA would finds its way into the film. After having my questions about Prometheus’ mysterious Alien factor finally answered, I was inspired to revisit another film with its own “alien factor” – 1990’s Metamorphosis: The Alien Factor.
Initially developed as a sequel to 1983’s cult creature feature The Deadly Spawn, Metamorphosis evolved into something entirely separate from that earlier film. Deadly Spawn producer Ted A. Bohus returned to shepherd this new project but even though it was planned to be a straight sequel, for whatever reason those plans were scrapped and what emerged was a film that tread the same B-movie terrain and kept the same love of monster movies and old school FX as The Deadly Spawn but was otherwise unrelated.

It’s The Deadly Spawn, this month’s Late Night Grindhouse midnight movie at The Hi-Pointe Theater brought to you by the madmen at Destroy the Brain.com, and it’s another big-screen St. Louis premiere. This $25,000 16mm wonder from 1985 concerns a meteorite that crashes to earth during a torrential thunderstorm, bringing with it a slimy, three-headed alien beast that craves human meat and gives birth to hundreds of eel-like spawn. The wicked intergalactic fiend promptly scarfs down two campers and then goes into the basement of a house where a teenage monster movie fan (Charles George Hildebrandt) lives, eating the kid’s parents as well. And this is just in the first ten minutes!

A toothy alien horror goes on the rampage.
A creature feature from the depths of the Eighties bargain bin, The Deadly Spawn is, by any measure of quality, really quite ridiculous. But for horror aficionados, and B-movie die-hards, director Douglas McKeown's relentless squeezing of the $25,000 budget to produce some actually quite impressive special effects, make it worthy of some note.

As the spawn grow in size, and in appetite they eat their way through Pete and Charles’ family and friends, including Aunt Millie (Ethel Michelson) and Uncle Herb (John Schmerling), along with their invited guests and a handful of Pete’s study buddy’s…

Take Shelter
One of the more glaring oversights in the recent awards season was that none of the major ceremonies even noticed Michael Shannon's incredible performance in this intriguing, enigmatic apocalyptic tale. Shannon plays a man plagued by visions of impending disaster. He hears thunder when no one else does and his dreams are full of harrowing scenes of oily rain, animal attacks and storms. He fixates on reinforcing an old storm shelter on his property while accepting that, due to a family history of mental illness, it might all be in his head. While the year's other non-action movie end-of-days tale, Melancholia, was very much a director's film, Take Shelter belongs to the actors.
Shannon's detailed and complex performance ensures that both theories are given credence; it never really leans towards one at the expense of the other. He's turning out to be an impressively versatile actor, walking...

We all know that the news channels prefer stories about death, destruction and bad things headed your way, but absent from much of the fear mongering are stories pinpointing legitimate sources of concern. I’m speaking of course, about slug-like aliens from outer space. Thankfully filmmakers have been far less afraid to expose the slimy and deadly threats from the stars. From Night of the Creeps to Slither, the movies are clearly the place to go if you want the truth about the dangers of intergalactic gastropods. 1983′s The Deadly Spawn exists on a far lower profile than those two, but it follows a similar pattern. Space slugs land on Earth and quickly begin offing humans in grotesque ways. The action here is centered almost exclusively in a single house as a trio of nerdy high-schoolers and a horror-loving pre-teen find themselves trapped with the mutating and multiplying monster. Cue the face munching. Kills...

It’s always fun to go back to B-movie creature features from the 80s to see how filmmakers used to do monsters and gore when they couldn’t just paste them in later with After Effects. Some of that good old fashioned filmmaking goes on today, but it’s hard to pull it off without feeling hokey or overly reverential and derivative. There’s just no substitute for the real thing, and that’s what makes The Deadly Spawn so fun: bad acting, good old rubber monsters, and pools of blood. Unfortunately, it’s the former the entire time, and the latter two for only about 15-minutes. And that 15 minutes is broken up between ridiculously drawn out scenes that don’t really add to a story, just the runtime. The Deadly Spawn could have been cut down to 30 minutes and it would be a sharper, and still equally satisfying film...

It’s time for another update from our friends at Arrow Video, this time previewing their March 2012 releases which encompass sleazy horror, cult British action movies and gory, cheesy sci-fi… The highlight for me in March’s releases? Definitely has to be Don’t Go In The House.
Who Dares Wins (Arrow Video)
The 60 Second War Begins Now! Paranoia, black ops and espionage combine in Who Dares Wins, a violent and edgy anti-terror classic starring Lewis Collins (The Professionals) and Edward Woodward (The Equalizer). The anti-nuclear movement is plotting a bloody outrage on British soil and, having already fatally lost their undercover operative at a violent protest, the secret services call on the aid of the Sas. Captain Peter Skellen (Collins) risks his career, his family and his life to infiltrate the terrorist group before they can unleash an attack that will devastate the country. Relive a classic cold war...

Tim Sullivan (Driftwood, Chillerama, Vh1.s Scream Queens) has optioned the rights to Doors co-founder Ray Manzarek.s bestselling novel The Poet in Exile. Plans call for a feature film to be written and directed by Sullivan and produced by Manzarek. Sullivan will co-write the script with Chillerama producer and editor Gavin Heffernan (Expiration) and New Mexico poet/author Liz Sullivan (Icons and Outcasts).
Published to strong acclaim, Manzarek.s novel explores the notion .what if. his former band mate, the iconic rock and roll poet and legend Jim Morrison, did indeed stage his death in 1971 (as widely speculated), and now, 40 years later, contacts Manzarek from his hiding place in the Seychelles Islands to embark on one final journey of rock and roll rebellion.

The Deadly Spawn is one of those movies that you watch and you enjoy for all the right reasons. It's funny, scary, and has some truly wonderful special effects without CGI mucking it up. $20 says they remake it. Anyway, Synapse Films released The Deadly Spawn on a special edition disc, and it really was a good release. Well, the good folks over at Elite Entertainment (responsible for releasing such "classics" as Splatter University, Howling III,…...

Gay Adult Superstar Brent Corrigan Wraps Leading Role In Tim Sullivan’S Mainstream Horror-comedy“Chillerama: I Was A Teenage Werebear”
Gay adult superstar Brent Corrigan has just wrapped the leading role in writer/director Tim Sullivan’s segment of the horror-comedy anthology feature film “Chillerama”. Homage to the Drive-In movies of the50’s and 60’s, “Chillerama” is collaboration between Sullivan and fellow filmmakers Adam Rifkin (“Detroit Rock City”), Adam Green (“Hatchet”) and Joe Lynch (“Wrong Turn 2”).
“Each one of us is doing homage to a different genre and style,” explained Sullivan. “I choose the surf musicals of the 60’s crossed with “Lost Boys”and “Twilight”. As a gay man, I’ve always been drawn to the queer subtext in films depicting teenage angst, whether it be James Dean’s relationship to Sal Mineo in “Rebel Without a Cause” or Zac Efron’s emotional tug...

(This film was sent to Bad Lit as a screener copy from the 2010 Spooky Movie Film Festival.)
El Monstro Del Mar! by Australian filmmaker Stuart Simpson is a giddy, modernized recreation of the golden era of American teenage exploitation films. It has the perfect combination of everything that made exploitation great in the Sixties: Sexy girls, a rockin’ soundtrack, a gross monster. Where Simpson kicks it all up a notch for modern audiences is that it really delivers on the gore that older films could only tease about.
The film’s black & white opening of three “bad” girls – and you know actresses Nelli Scarlet, Kate Watts and Karli Madden are bad from their tattoos and low-cut tops — driving through a bleak, desolate Australian landscape, El Monstro Del Mar! is a direct homage to Russ Meyer’s classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill Kill!, right down to the women’s hair color: Two brunettes and a blonde.

It's been ridiculed everywhere, but James Nguyen's labour of love is anti-mainstream film-making at its most convincing
The question "What movies are you looking forward to?" is common enough in chats about film, but I've struggled with it this year. Over the past couple of months, however, I've found the answer: Birdemic: Shock And Terror.
Birdemic is already being hailed as one of the worst films ever made: the acting, dialogue, special effects, pretty much everything about it has been held up to ridicule. But while I am sure I'll be giggling along with the rest of the audience at the movie's shortcomings, that's not why I'm looking forward to it. I like what it represents. It's a truly independent production in times when "indie film" means as much as "indie music" – a tag, a label far removed from its original meaning; all the major studios have long had their fake indie imprints.

‘Tis the season to start feeling jolly, so here’s an old holiday short film from horror maestro Tim Sullivan, A Christmas Treat. In fact, this is Sullivan’s first short film directed back when he was an Nyu student back in the ’80s. It’s a really well done short with a nice, slow set-up and a terrific punchline. It reminds me a lot of the old Tales From the Darkside TV show, which would have been a contemporary at the time this was produced.
I don’t think I’ve written about Tim Sullivan on Bad Lit before, but he’s one helluva nice guy and a wonderful horror movie director. There are two films by him you need to check out if you haven’t already. The first is 2001 Maniacs, an updating of the Herschell Gordon Lewis splatter classic that stars the legendary Robert Englund and the wonderfully quirky Giuseppe Andrews,...

Filmmaker Ted A. Bohus is best known for his much beloved cult classic The Deadly Spawn, which featured a truly phallic creature with rows and rows of sharp flesh-tearing teeth, but that just might change thanks to his hilarious, yet badass looking new indie feature Hell on Earth.
Undead Backbrain caught up with Bohus, who had this to say about the flick: "Hell On Earth uses the classic theme of humans fighting their way out of an impossible situation. Of course this 'impossible situation' just happens to be infested with all sorts of monsters, demons, and undead creatures."
Honestly? That's all we need to know. Demons. Gore. Goo. We are so fuckin' there.
