Storyline

Shame and fear have kept Amelia Bennett silent about the sexual molestation she's been suffering at the hands of her father, Steven. But as Amelia starts to believe that Steven might harm her younger sibling in similar ways, she unburdens herself of her awful secret. Confronted with this horrifying piece of news, Steven's wife, Gail, can't believe it's true, and he professes his innocence. But as new details emerge, the family is shaken to its core. The real reason Michael Landon turned down the part is largely due to his ego. Landon identified himself with the likes of Charles Ingalls and would have never allowed his saintly image to be tarnished by such role. A lot of people mistake character with actor and he would also not have wanted to cast such aspersions upon his person. He also feared this would somehow diminish the popularity of the pious and god-like heroes he portrayed such as Ingalls and Little Joe. See more »

Still effective today

Groundbreaking movie is still good today. What a good cast. Ted Danson cast against type as the molesting father. It's quite horrific when he admits it. Glenn Close as his wife reacts realistically. First in disbelief then anger. Roxana Zal is the daughter and gives an understated effective performance.

There have been few movies about family incest since and this one stands the test of time.
