Did You Know?

The real reason Michael Landon turned down the part is largely due to his ego. Landon identified himself with the likes of Charles Ingalls and would have never allowed his saintly image to be tarnished by such role. A lot of people mistake character with actor and he would also not have wanted to cast such aspersions upon his person. He also feared this would somehow diminish the popularity of the pious and god-like heroes he portrayed such as Ingalls and Little Joe. See more »

Near the start of the film, Steven is talking to Amelia about her date for the dance. At one point, he says, "I can't believe I didn't know anything about you going to a dance with another boy." He immediately repeats the words "with a boy" again. See more »

Still effective today

Groundbreaking movie is still good today. What a good cast. Ted Danson cast against type as the molesting father. It's quite horrific when he admits it. Glenn Close as his wife reacts realistically. First in disbelief then anger. Roxana Zal is the daughter and gives an understated effective performance.

There have been few movies about family incest since and this one stands the test of time.
