The real reason Michael Landon turned down the part is largely due to his ego. Landon identified himself with the likes of Charles Ingalls and would have never allowed his saintly image to be tarnished by such role. A lot of people mistake character with actor and he would also not have wanted to cast such aspersions upon his person.
