Over many years there has been much speculation over famous and acclaimed Jewish author Primo Levi's death ("The Drowned And The Saved") and as to whether it was an accident or a suicide, brought on by his memories of being a survivor of Auschwitz. "The Assault", which deals with such intensely similar subject matter, especially in terms of the Nazi past and "survivor guilt", was released in the United States in February of 1987, and reviewed in the issue of Time Magazine dated April 6, 1987, a mere 5 days before Levi died on April 11, 1987. In many subsequent magazine articles and books about the deep mystery of what could have possibly motivated his suicide rather than his death being a tragic accident, this film may possibly be the answer.
