As iconic and as legendary as Green Day are, they are not invincible. Despite genre defining records such as Warning or Dookie – or even their magnum opus, American Idiot – they are still subject to scrutiny when it’s warranted. For the latter half of 2012 … well, it was warranted. The group took a risk, maybe too big of a risk, on the trilogy of records known as ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! that were released in the fall of 2012, and they weren’t even part of the same collection.
Each its own separate full-length and each its own selection in the band’s discography, the records maybe caught even more heat than if they were just released as a triple disc. To say the lackluster albums tarnished the band’s twenty year legacy may be harsh, but there was a point when most thought that ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! were simply a...

Green Day is living up to the title of their upcoming 12th studio album, Revolution Radio, with the record’s lead single, “Bang Bang.” The song just hit number one on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart, which means it was the most played track on rock radio stations in the past week.
Though hit singles aren’t an unfamiliar thing with Green Day, their top spot with “Bang Bang” is notable as it is now the band’s fastest rise to number one on the Mainstream Rock charts, nabbing the position in only three weeks. Their previous best was 2009’s “Know Your Enemy,” which reached the mark in five weeks.
Of course, Green Day is probably best known for their success on the Pop Songs chart, where the band has collected several Top 40 hits over the years, including a number one single in 2004’s emo anthem “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

Twenty One Pilots are taking the music industry by storm. Not only are they consistently in the top ten of the Billboard 200 chart week after week, but they’re straight up accomplishing things that no band has before – especially when it comes to their singles.
The rock act is making history on the charts this week with their songs “Ride” and “Heathens,” becoming the first band to reach number one on the Pop Songs chart and Alternative Songs chart simultaneously. Unlike the Hot 100 chart which is measured by radio play audience, sales data and streaming activity, the Pop and Alternative Songs charts are measured strictly by radio play. Basically, Twenty One Pilots are selling a ton of records, and they’re being played a lot on the radio.
Now, this isn’t the first time that a band has ruled the Pop and Alternative charts at the same time, but...

This documentary of the pop-punk band lacks curiosity, with not enough insight into their music
This deadeningly authorised cross-promotional item from Green Day suffers from that lack of curiosity common among one-night-only rock docs. Embedded with the pop-punks as they recorded their American Idiot opus, film-maker John Roecker soon fades into the furniture: the between-takes downtime is unrevealing, while sequences on the construction of Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and other songs, cut too early to polished live performances, before we can witness their craft. We get a passing sense of the band’s personalities – incorrigibly boyish, even as they head into fatherhood – yet there is nothing of substance on the music, or its notionally oppositional slant.

The Grammys! They’re this coming Sunday and I almost forgot! To celebrate, here are all 55 winners of the Record of the Year Grammy ranked for your consideration. Now beat it.
55. “Don’t Worry Be Happy,” Bobby McFerrin
Finger-snapping never sounded so un-snappy.
54. “Rosanna,” Toto
You know, a Grammy windfall was bound to happen one of those exactly 1982 bands (Air Supply, Foreigner, Reo Speedwagon, etc), and Toto was the big winner. “Rosanna” is fun, but Grammy-worthy?
53. “Sunny Came Home,” Shawn Colvin
You know, a Grammy windfall was bound to happen to one of those exactly 1998 female singer-songwriters (Meredith Brooks, Natalie Imbruglia, Paula Cole, etc.), and Shawn Colvin was the big winner. “Sunny Came Home” is contemplative, but Grammy-worthy?
52. “Change the World,” Eric Clapton
Sort of annoying when a legendary artist wins for his most palatable and forgettable material. “Change the World” is merely radio-friendly, not an artistic breakthrough.

Exclusive: TLC, intent upon owning the girls-seeking-fame programming thread, will air a special/backdoor pilot on August 7 called Raising Fame. It’s from Authentic Entertainment LLC — the same production house that brought you TLC’s beauty-pageant babies series, Toddlers & Tiaras, and its spinoff, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo — as well as TLC’s upcoming competing kiddie cheerleaders series, Cheer Perfection. Raising Fame is about teen girls who’ve moved to Los Angeles with Mom, seeking fame.It continues the thread’s so-far successful casting formula: one of this, one of that. There’s the clueless 15-year-old redhead from Sunrise Beach, Mo, who, after eight TV pilot seasons with zero auditions, is still shacked up with Mom in a one-bedroom apartment at the Oakwood apartment complex in Hollywood, on the Boulevard of Broken Dreams – one of the stopping points for those double-decker tour buses that swing around town – or should be.

Green Day returned to the stage over the weekend, performing its first concert since frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's stint in rehab.
According to Rolling Stone, the band played a sold-out, 2-hour show on Sunday at the Fox Theater in Pomona, Calif. The concert was reportedly the first of four warm-up shows that the band will play before kick-starting its arena tour in late March.
Green Day had previously postponed the start of its 2013 world tour after Armstrong's "meltdown" onstage during a concert at Las Vegas' iHeartRadio Music Festival in September. According to an Associated Press report at the time, the Green Day frontman launched into a profanity-filled rant and smashed his guitar on stage at the festival. A couple of days later, the band's rep announced that Armstrong would be headed to rehab for substance abuse.
“I remember tiny things,” Armstrong recently told Rolling Stone of the iHeartRadio show.

The business of rock -- the creative juices, the vibe, the sound and fury, the rage, the excitement, the whole kit and caboodle -- is very lacking these days. Songs come and go, like cotton candy -- looks good, tastes good, but leaves no lasting impression other than a disgusting sugary aftertaste. Few can scale the heights and maintain the majesty of Rawk! One would be hard-pressed to find young rock bands today with the chops and creativity to sustain four to five decades of arena-sized music-making like the Stones, Kiss, Tom Petty, The Boss, AC/DC, Eagles, The Who, U2. I would argue there is perhaps just one band excellent enough to carry that very heavy torch and to wave it high and wide -- Green Day. Formed in Berkley in 1987, they are well on their way: this year marks their 25th anniversary in the music biz.
Green Day has swag.

Paul Alexander, author of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams: The Life, Times and Legend of James Dean" (Viking) and "Salinger: A Biography," which is about to be made into a documentary by Shane Salerno, has written a memorable novel about a showbiz family. "Southern Gothic" is a brilliant study of an alcoholic family in the throes of the disease. Alexander's description of protagonist Carson Greer is on the money: "Carson wore a black sheath dress, black Ferragamo flats, a single strand of white cultured pearls." Carson's mother, Evelyn Greer, is the Oscar-winning actress,...

Hi Guys,
Brooke from Pop Inc. I'm a confirmed fan of Cinema Retro and wanted to send you a link to our new video, which recently screened in Los Angeles at the Downtown Independent.
It's called Boulevard of Broken Dreams, was shot on location in Hollywood and it's hero is street performer Pharaoh Kingsley, one of Hollywood's longest running Chaplin impressionists.
For nearly 25 years running, Kingsley has played Chaplin's Tramp on the Boulevard and has asked for nothing more than for people to "Smile". We thought it was time he scored a starring role. Last, we're raising awareness for My Friend's Place, a day center for homeless youth in Hollywood. Hope you like it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtI7xnug85c&feature=share

Like any awards show, the Grammys are often hit and miss, with some years completely vanishing into the ether while others live on in the imaginations of music fans everywhere. The 2006 version of the show is one of the latter, as it featured a clean sweep by U2 (they won all five awards they were nominated for, including Album of the Year for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb) and one of the biggest lineups of performances ever (including Madonna, Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey, Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West and an all-star tribute to Sly & the Family Stone). It also represented a peak for Green Day, who on this day in 2006 took home the prize for Record of the Year (often considered the top award of the night) for the American Idiot track "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

New York — If someone came up to you and called you an American idiot, you wouldn't react too kindly. But for the people in the audience for Friday's "Good Morning America" Summer Concert, the insult became a chant of praise for the cast of Green Day's Broadway musical. Families and punk rockers alike had gathered in Central Park, holding up signs and wearing T-shirts for "American Idiot" and the band behind the Tony-winning show.
The cast opened with the chorus of "American Idiot," accompanied by a mixture of choreographed movement and punkish freestyle head-banging, getting the audience excited. They ended with the salute to punk rock, their fists held in the air as the audience screamed.

Chicago – Harmonix and MTV Games took something of a surprising turn after the massive success of last year’s best music game, “The Beatles: Rock Band,” by choosing the follow-up band from a very different arena of radio rock and announcing “Green Day: Rock Band.” With dozens of bands on player’s wish lists of who they would love to get the “Beatles Treatment,” many were surprised that Green Day was chosen as the follow-up group.

It’s been sixteen years since Freddy Krueger last graced the cinema screen (discounting the awful Freddy vs Jason) and fans have been waiting with baited breath for the release of Platinum Dunes’ remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Four new clips have been released by Platinum Dunes for Nightmare and they show iconic dreamstalker, Freddy Krueger back at his best. If you remember the disturbing PR leading up to the release of Pandorum last year, then you’ll remember this, it’s the motion poster for the film. What’s a motion poster? Pretty much what it sounds like, a moving poster, complete with sound. Why am I bringing this up? You read the headline right? Platinum Dunes have released a new motion poster for A Nightmare on Elm Street.
The thing is, where Pandorum’s motion poster was clearly disturbing, the new addition for A Nightmare on Elm Street is more, well, cool. Does this mean that Freddy has lost his effect? Probably not, but it does raise some personal concerns that the film may not push any new boundaries. "American Idiot" opened Tuesday night to strong enough reviews in a weak theater season that it is now one of the front-runners to win best musical at the upcoming Tony Awards. The production is based on Green Day's mega-hit CD of the same name, which contended for five awards at the 2005 Grammys. While it won for best rock album, it lost the big prize of album of the year to Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company." However, in 2006, one of its 13 tracks -- "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"-- took home another top Grammy Award as record of the year for longtime bandmates Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool and Mike Dirnt. And they're all hearing the same frightening voice...
One by one he terrorizes them within the curved walls of their dreams, where the rules are his and the only way out is to wake up.
But when one of their number dies a violent death, they soon realize that what happens in their dreams happens for real, and the only way...

A new TV spot and film clip have hit the net for A Nightmare on Elm Street, the long awaited return of Dream Stalker, Freddy Krueger to the big screen. Starring Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Thomas Dekker, Kellan Lutz, Katie Cassidy, Connie Britton and Jackie Earle Haley as the infamous Krueger, the film is directed by Samuel Bayer and produced by Brad Fuller and Michael Bay (don’t let that put you off).
The TV spot, entitled “Stay Awake”, features a pretty much the same as we’ve seen previously, with the emphasis being put on, you guessed it, staying awake. The clip is an extended scene featuring Nancy (Rooney Mara) frantically searching for her boyfriend, Quentin (Kyle Gallner) in a supermarket. Without realising it, the tired Nancy is slipping into the semi-dream state known as “micro-napping,” which, as the film will explain, is when you’re asleep for short...

"Green Day: Rock Band" clearly kept its focus on Dookie and everything after, judging from the full, freshly released track list. While Jason and I didn't get our "Christie Road" wish, the official set list does include "Burnout," "Basketcase," "F.O.D." and everything else off of their their breakout 1994 album (minus the classic bonus track "All By Myself," unless there's something that's been left off the press release). American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown era lovers come out as the big winners, though. Check out what else made the cut after the jump.

Pay attention, Green Day fans. It’s time to don your spiky black wig, and strap on that red necktie, because we have some news for you regarding Green Day: Rock Band. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Simon Vozick-Levinson, Harmonix project director, Chris Foster, not only dropped interesting morsels regarding Green Day: Rock Band, but also disclosed the entire 47-track lineup.
As we somewhat suspected would be the case for the next band-dedicated Rock Band, the same method for progressing through the track list used in Beatles: Rock Band will be in place here, serving to chronicle the career of Green Day as it evolved from jamming in friends’ basements to filling arenas to capacity. A new trailer has surfaced online today for Platinum Dunes’ latest horror remake, A Nightmare on Elm Street – and this time there’s a lot more Freddy to be had! Ever since the remake was initially announced (waaaay back on our old site, Original Sharp Says in Dec 2008), there has been one question above all others on the lips of fans worldwide – what will the new-look Freddy Krueger look like?
Of course the nice folks over at Platinum Dunes were aware of this, and so have kept Freddy’s face quite literally in the dark, until now. And to top it off it’s not what you think, yes there’s a nice “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it shot of Freddy’s face in the trailer but it’s still far too shady to make out. So where does the full-on face shot come from? Why a judicious fan over at SuperHero Hype of course,...

A brand new TV spot has been released for the long awaited remake, A Nightmare on Elm Street, the spot, which can be seen below, is such that it almost makes the king of nightmares, Freddy Krueger, look like a victim. Why you say? Well I’m glad you asked that question.
Waaay back in May of last year, there were reports that the film’s antagonist, Krueger, could well have been innocent of the charges he faced prior to his baptism of fire. If this was the case then he died for nothing other than parent’s paranoia, our original article (which can be found here) points out that in today’s climate of suspicion this isn’t too far afield from real life, in which society struggles to balance our suspicion and fear for our children, against rational thinking and true justice.

Hooray for over-anxious retailers! Play has posted a partial tracklist for the upcoming Green Day: Rock Band – tentatively confirming that the title it will include two of the band’s albums in their entirety: Dookie and American Idiot.
Dookie was Green Day’s major label debut, and includes the hits “Longview,” “Welcome to Paradise”, “Basket Case”, and “When I Come Around”.
Green Day: Rock Band has been rated ”Teen” – so it will be interesting how the acidic and foul-mouthed “F.O.D.” will be edited to meet the more family friendly “Teen” requirements of the Esrb.
American Idiot (which also has its fair share of M-rated content) was the band’s 2004 rock opera. A critical and commercial smash, it contains the hits “Jesus of Suburbia”, “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, and the title track “American Idiot”.

Strong Tony Awards buzz builds for "American Idiot," which began previews today at the St. James Theatre, not officially opening until April 20. Many pundits believe it's the front-runner to win best musical. The previous awards pedigree of "American Idiot" certainly suggests that. The production is based upon Green Day's mega-hit CD, which lost best album at the Grammys in 2005 to Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company," but one of its tracks – "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" – rallied in 2006 to bag the prize as best record of the year. The Broadway production is directed by Michael Mayer, who won the Tony for helming best musical champ of 2007, "Spring Awakening," which bears some...

If there’s one film I’m dying to see this year, one film that stokes my sense of nostalgia, it’s New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes’ long awaited remake, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Why am I so excited about this film’s release? Because unlike Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger is the ultimate iconic horror villain. And unlike those two he also has some pretty good one-liners!

Okay so freaky might be the wrong word but it definitely makes damn good viewing! The second full-length trailer has been released for this year’s highly anticipated remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The gory slasher stars Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic (or should that be demonic?) kiddie-killer, Freddy Kruegar, the film hits theatres everywhere this Spring.
While I’m inherently opposed to remakes, I’m a huge fan of the original ‘Nightmare series, part I in particular, so I’m holding out hope that the remake will not turn out to be another Friday the 13th. In 2010, Platinum Dunes and New Line Cinema will be bringing your nightmares to life once again with a polished remake and revival of one of the most iconic horror franchises in the history of cinema – A Nightmare on Elm Street. Season two of 90210 focuses on our group as they begin their all-important Junior year. They'll go through all the ordinary teenage struggles and triumphs – crushes, sexual discovery, academic pressure, evolving friendships, shunning and isolation, love and relationships, family issues, SATs, STDs, a desire to fit in,...
