Hong Kong cinema is associated with action films which most often bring to mind male protagonists. Most undeservedly so since, thanks to the characteristics of Hong Kong martial arts films, women have been successfully surmounting their male counterparts with training, agility, and wits in them for many decades. The masters, such as King Hu and Tsui Hark, were well-aware of it. They were among the ones who discovered outstanding artists whose roles were ahead of their times and set out new directions for the development of popular cinema.
Hong Kong is not just about action cinema, but also brilliant comedies and dramas, and sharp tales with social overtones, in which fascinating, complex female characters are also present. The Hong Kong Heroines section brings back strong heroines and the great roles of stars, including Cheng Pei-pei, Sylvia Chang, Cherry Ngan, and Maggie Cheung. In 1968, the increasingly distant Beatles dragged themselves into the studio to record the Paul McCartney song “Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da.” The band was growing tired of working together, and they didn’t exactly hide the fact that they disliked the song. In short, it was a miserable day in the studio, and tempers grew short. Engineer Geoff Emerick watched as McCartney and producer George Martin began shouting at each other. He was so disgusted with the fight that he quit.

Oliver Stone’s epic conspiracy-thriller JFK, surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the case brought about by New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison in relation to his murder, was released in 1991 to an astonishing level of critical backlash. Even before JFK arrived in theatres it was being pilloried and attacked by many in the media. The attacks were kick-started by Washington Post correspondent George Lardner, an investigative reporter who wrote a piece called On the Set: Dallas In Wonderland; How Oliver Stone’s Version Of The Kennedy Assassination Exploits The Edge Of Paranoia, which was actually based solely on a leaked copy of Stone’s first draft of the script.

Tonight marks the opening night of the 2014 NFL Season, so in celebration, here are the 10 best songs about sports. I tried to make it all football, but there are surprisingly few football-themed hits. And since it’s still baseball season, I decided to throw in a few baseball ones as well. Basketball? Other than “I Believe I Can Fly,” the round ball got left out in the cold since the only other basketball song I could think of was Cheech & Chong’s “Basketball Jones,” which, quite frankly, is in a league of its own. Given that the World Cup just ended, I also threw in a little soccer love. Though certainly not written about football, Jay Z and Rihanna's "Run This Town" is the new theme song for Thursday Night Football, according to NFL and CBS. The pair's hit, from Jay Z's "The Blueprint 3," will get reworked each week with narration by Don Cheadle.

Director Spike Lee has announced a Kickstarter campaign for his next directorial effort, a feature about "human beings who are addicted to blood." (It's not "Blacula," Lee wrote on the Kickstarter page). Added the director: "There's a lot of sex in it too."
In the video accompanying the announcement, Lee cited the recent Kickstarter wins by "Veronica Mars" and Zach Braff as just some of the reasons why he came to the crowd-funding website for support. The director offered little other information about the project in the clip, but fans shouldn't expect the plot to rely on superheroes, CGI or explosions.
With the current climate in The Hollywood Studio System it's not an encouraging look for Independent Filmmakers. I'm not hating, just stating the facts. Super Heroes, Comic Books, 3D Special Efx, Blowing up the Planet Nine Times and Fly through the Air while Transforming is not my Thang. To...

Rapper Rick Ross is featured in a new song, and its lyrics may cause quite an uproar with listeners. Read the lyrics and hear the song below!
Rocko, Future and Rick Ross‘ new song ”You Don’t Even Know” dropped this week, and the lyrics, which allegedly seem to support date rape, are causing us to wish we didn’t know anything about it!
“Put molly all in her champagne, she aint even know it. I took her home and I enjoyed that, she aint even know it,” Rick Ross raps in the song.
The lyrics seem to be backing the idea of date rape, basically saying that slipping a woman a drug and taking her home — without her knowledge — is acceptable.

"She works hard for the money," Donna Summer once sang, and just as it was the case in 1983, pop stars these days have to work their butts off to earn those album purchases, downloads and concert ticket sales in this age of YouTube, X-Box and Angry Birds.
But while some singers identify with the Protestant work ethic espoused by Donna, there are others who, as Bruno Mars puts it, “don’t feel like doing anything [and] just wanna lay in my bed.” And it’s not always only those who are hardworking who find success, as the popularity of Bruno proves. Sometimes you can have your cake and eat it.
So, who’s working hard and who’s not? In the spirit of Christmas, we decided to put together a pop star naughty and nice list for Santa.

New York -- Martin Sheen shone a spotlight Monday on a prisoner's efforts to get his 1999 murder conviction thrown out, saying the case "cries out for justice."
Meeting inmate Jon-Adrian Velazquez at a suburban prison Monday "confirmed my belief that he is an innocent man," the actor said at a news conference later in the day outside a Manhattan courthouse. "I came away inspired. He is a young man on fire with the truth."
Sheen's appearance trained some star power on a case that involves a longstanding issue getting new attention from the U.S. Supreme Court: the reliability of eyewitness identifications of suspects.
Convicted of fatally shooting retired police officer Albert Ward in an underground betting parlor in 1998, Velazquez is serving 25 years to life in prison. But he and lawyers Robert C. Gottlieb and Celia A. Gordon are trying to persuade Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus. R. Vance Jr.

Bad Boy Records has a rich tradition. Since its inception in the early 1990s, label CEO Sean "Diddy" Combs has introduced some of hip-hop's most influential artists. Of course, there was the Notorious B.I.G., the Lox, Ma$e and Black Rob. Now, Diddy is looking to launch the next generation of Bad Boy spitters like Mgk and Wednesday's "RapFix Live" guest, Red Café.
The Brooklyn spitter began his career as a part of the group Da Franchise but later branched off with his solo career. "Def Jam Rapstar" is a big release for hip-hop fans, a long-ignored group when it comes to video games. In an effort to make the release an even bigger deal, Def Jam has teamed up Cash Money Records to offer a special bonus to early adopters of the game. Anyone who purchases "Def Jam Rapstar" at a Best Buy between October 12 and October 19 will also receive a free copy of Lil Wayne's ninth album, entitled "I Am Not A Human Being."
Despite Lil Wayne's current incarceration, "I Am Not A Human Being" will be his second album released in less than a year, and fans of hip-hop will undoubtedly appreciate the two-for-one deal they're getting with the game and the album.
In addition to the album, followers of Lil Wayne can attempt his lyrical style in one of his songs, "A Milli," which is included in the game.

"Listening" is the key to good acting, according to Helen Stenborg. Co-starring Off-Broadway at the DR2 Theatre in Morris Panych's "Vigil" gives her the chance to exercise that talent. This two-hander centers on the evolving relationship between a misanthropic young man (Malcolm Gets) and his dying, estranged aunt Grace (Stenborg), who barely speaks. While the 84-year-old Minneapolis native has never played a silent character before, her preparation for this part is basically the same as for any other. There is one major difference: She will not share certain elements of Grace's inner life with Gets or the director, Stephen Dimenna. "Sometimes they ask me, 'What are you thinking?' That's my secret. But it's interesting: If I change my thoughts, I'll get a different reaction from Malcolm." She adds she is able to offer variety in her silent responses, by registering his change of mood.At this point in her six-decade career,...

Achievement and trophy hunters the world over are breathing a sigh of relief over what appears to be the official list for "Assassin's Creed 2." The first game featured some of the most infuriating achievements, requiring you to hunt down hundreds of worthless flags and evil Templars. This time around it appears the achievements are more story related and manageable, with just one collect-a-thon in the form of missing feathers.
I was concerned about these feathers in particular, but unlike the flags of the first game, you'll be able to purchase in-game maps which will reveal the location of said feathers. All in all it should be a pretty manageable 1000 gamescore/platinum trophy for those so inclined.
* Master Assassin - Unlock All Trophies (Platinum)
* The Birth of an Assassin - Be reborn as Ezio Auditore Da Firenze. (Bronze, 20G)
* Arrivederci Abstergo - Break out of Abstergo. (Bronze, 20G)

"Cherrybomb," "Peacefire," "Identities," "Gabriel Byrne: Stories from Home" and "The Secret of Kells" will receive U.S. premieres at the Los Angeles Irish Film Festival, which runs from Sept. 23-27 at the Linwood Dunn Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
"We are proud to be bringing five U.S. premieres to festival audiences," festival director Lisa McLaughlin-Strassman said. "The strong lineup for the 2009 Los Angeles Irish Film Festival continues to demonstrate that the new wave of filmmaking in Ireland is maturing, and we are pleased to be able to provide a forum for its storytelling tradition."
Conor McPherson's supernatural drama "The Eclipse," starring Ciaran Hinds and Aidan Quinn, will kick off the fest.
The festival will close with a tribute to Irish playwright Hugh Leonard, who died in Dublin in February, with a screening of "Da," the classic film based on his Tony-award winning, semi-autobiographical stage play.

Please forgive us — no main pick on Monday, and now an abbreviated version of Don't Sleep.
Don't fret! We're going to be coming back so hard next week with Slaughterhouse. The four-man crew (Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I and Royce Da 5'9") came through, and not only talked about their debut group LP in stores right now, but also weighed in our 2009 Hottest MCs in the Game list.
All four need to be included in the conversation, because of their ferocious lyricism and loyal following. But who do the fellas think should make the list besides themselves?
"I can't front — the young boy Drake is spitting," Joell Ortiz said. "I'm interested in seeing where he goes with his career. Just aside from singing, the dude can rap.

Is Charlie Sheen hoping for a couple of sluggers when his wife, Brooke, gives birth to twin boys in April? It would seem so based on the sports-themed baby shower held for the couple on Saturday afternoon. At the party – which was attended by a variety of stars including Paris Hilton, Eric Dane and baseball star Barry Bonds – kids decorated cupcakes with baseballs and basketballs, and blue and brown candy filled up apothecary jars. The family-friendly outdoor affair was held at the Los Angeles home of Dr. 90210 star Dr. Nassif and his wife Adrienne Maloof-Nassif. Also among the star-studded...

Irish playwright Hugh Leonard has died, aged 82.
Leonard had been receiving hospital treatment for some time and died in Dublin, Ireland on Thursday.
He was born John Keyes Byrne but took on his pen name in the 1950s to hide his double life as an aspiring, outspoken writer from his Irish civil service employers.
He was famed for his father-and-son drama Da, which won a Tony Award for its run on Broadway in 1978. It was later made into a Martin Sheen-starring film in 1982.
Leonard also held a longstanding monthly column in the Irish Sunday Independent newspaper.
Irish President Mary McAleese paid tribute to the writer: "Hugh will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of his company and counsel throughout the years.
"(He) infused his work with a unique wit, all the while demonstrating a great intuition, perceptiveness and forgiveness of human nature."
Leonard is survived by his second wife, Kathy, and daughter, Danielle.

Beloved US stage and screen star Barnard Hughes has died after a brief illness. He was 90. The Tony and Emmy Award-winner, who has featured in a string of movies including The Lost Boys, Hamlet, Tron, Midnight Cowboy and Cradle Will Rock, died in a New York City hospital on Monday, just six days before his 91st birthday. Hughes fell in love with show business after auditioning for a play on a dare and went on to star in more than 400 Broadway, New York City, shows, according to theater website broadwayworld.com. He made his Broadway debut in 1935 in Herself Mrs. Patrick Crowley and returned to the stage after serving in the US Army in World War Two. After a string of movie roles in the 1960s and 1970s, Hughes made a big splash on Broadway in Da - a role which won him Tony and Drama Desk awards in 1978. He later recreated the role in the 1988 movie adaptation. His TV roles included a 1977 Emmy Award-winning performance on Lou Grant. Hughes was awarded an honorary doctorate from Manhattan College, the school he'd dropped out of to become an actor, in 1992. Plans for a memorial gathering will be announced.
